- Whether you bump your knee and instantly put a hand on it, or you kiss the boo boo of a child, both of these take advantage of the Gate Control Theory of Pain. In this video, I'll show you why and how that works, as well as why our senses are kind of whack to begin with.

Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m a freelance science writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. I used to work in the clinical setting as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapy aide, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. After working in the clinical setting, I went back to school and became a teacher. The goal of my content is to help normal people, not just pre-med students, learn about the human body. That might mean explaining a topic from an anatomy class or exploring a topic from medical history.

Like how you explained it but just wondering, aren't A beta fibers mechanoreceptors not A delta?
Hi Patricia: Totally, that's a wording error on my part and I should've clarified that. A-delta fibers are a myelinated and wider diameter which makes them conduct faster than thin diameter, unmyelinated C fibers. Other than the mechanoreceptor label for Ad fibers, the diagram is still usable. Thank you for pointing that out!
Thank you for your clarification! and yes you made it all simpler and easier to understand :) appreciate it!
@@Corporis Thanks. Subscribe
This video was so helpful, that when he said "do you mind giving a like for this video" I literally took 30 seconds to sign into my gmail just to give this man a like. And a subscribe. You deserve it, sir!
Good job. Pain is actually much more complex than I had imagined. Look forward to future videos on the subject.
The way you explained it helped me better understand the gate control theory, so thank you
Excellent explanation!! Thanks and congratullations!
Awesome video! This is just what I needed! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. They are really helpful! :)
I appreciate the feedback, thank you! Any topics you want covered in future videos?
Thank you - I'm in nursing and studying this. we are also going through Transduction, Transmission, perception, and modulation of Pain. We are a large group of avid RUclips WATCHERS. *hint *hint *hint ;)
Congrats on 300 subs!
Super informative, high quality video with great visual examples! Hope you continue to make these, they're super helpful for people!
Just read the description and realized that you're doing this all without a team! That's impressive. Kudos!
Thank you Hannah! Yes, I’m continuing to make these, they’re fun to do! Any recommendations for future topics you’d like covered?
What a good way to explain the gate control theory! It helped me with my research, thank you a lot! :)
My pleasure! Just a heads up, since someone pointed out my error a while ago, but A-delta fibers are not mechanoreceptors, A-beta fibers are.
thanks Dr Kelly!
Your videos seem so high quality why dont you have more subs
Thanks!
Back when I used to skate, I had a lot of those shin rubbing moments like the family guy clip. Nice to know the science behind it now 🤓🤓🤓
Thanks for this! You explained it a 100 times faster and easier than my university professor ever did 😅
Claire my pleasure! More videos like this coming soon
Learning for my bio psychology exam and this summed it up so well!
My pleasure! And an exam in the summer sound terrible -- good luck!
thank you very much
Finally I found your RUclips channel I really liked your videos on seekers about human body.
That's awfully nice of you to say. Thank you!
so helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful! We are starting Electrotherapy (TENS, NMES and etc)..
Same sis
You are one magnificent human being. This video helped me so much. I love the way you explain the Gate theory 😍 Now I understand what my professor was blabbing about 😂❤ but can you also make a video of Gate theory related to medications? ^____^ That would be great!
Rishelle Calunod I’d love to make that video but man, that would be like a 30 minute video! Haha
Not gonna lie this video helped me understand this theory for a university paper on pain
I has a mask that’s the greatest compliment I can get, thank you! I hope your paper turns out great!
@@Corporis would thourght you would like to know I passed and I would like to again thank you
cool Kurzgesagt posters in the back
Immunity audio book is a good read/listen.
thanks for this vedio, can you put a vedio with full explanation about gate control theory
Interesting video. For the algorithm!
so easy and clear
Thank you so much!
Thank you for this I'm about to do an essay on this and I honestly can't take it in via the open university
Sir with due redpect to you Substantia Gelatinosa is in dorsal horn of spinal cord not in brainstem.
lol I know it was uploaded 5 years ago but Andrew Huberman went over how receptors on the tongue aren't specific to one type of taste. They blend a bit.
Im only here because of an ap psych assignment lol
thank you piplup
Yes, glad you appreciate Piplup on set! He is the guardian we need with he cuteness we don’t deserve!
Hello, is the gate control theory primarily occurring in the brain stem as you suggested or the spinal cord?
watching this one day before my ap psych exam
Good luck!

You are so cool
HelloElo Craft Glad I managed to fool someone!

goob vib i lykit
greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
can't understand
No problem! What can I help clarify?
touching a painful area is human instinct, it has nothing to do with pain control
What about human instinct to control pain? I don't think that's far fetched.
you're handsome
Pain perception, more like painception haha..ha... okay sorry
A year ago i was hitted by a basketball in my arm so i burp on myself in the arm and now i am fine. That child was steve jobs
Why’d you make the title so complicated, now I know I’m not gonna understand the video
Patrick Kelly it’s the middle of summer and I’m not in a study mood rn
Also I just joined another tournament plz check it out smash.gg/tournament/yeet-summit/details
Dude, it's not hard. That is really just the name of the theory.
i do not believe in the gate control theory, to me it is just a theory and in practice it does not relieve pain.
