- The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, often referred to as the MBTA or The T, is the public operator of most bus, subway, commuter rail, and ferry routes in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area. Officially a "body politic and corporate, and a political subdivision" of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it was formed in 1964. Its immediate predecessor, the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), was immortalized by The Kingston Trio in the popular folk-protest lament "M.T.A." Locals call it "The T", after its logo, the letter T in a circle, adopted in the 1960s and inspired by the Stockholm Metro. In 2008, the system averaged 1.3 million passenger trips each weekday, of which the subway averaged 598,200, making it the fourth busiest subway system in the United States. The Green Line and Ashmont--Mattapan High Speed Line comprise the busiest light-rail system in the U.S, with a weekday ridership of 255,100.

I lived in Boston1965-2001. I miss the entire T experience. I miss the music performers at Park Street under, the screech of the old cars rounding the curve inbound at Boylston and running the tunnels (since closed) to get in and out of buildings without going up to the street. Back then the ride was 25 cents. Miss the tokens. I have one from my last ride on the Greenline. Have to have a car now; I put up a picture of my dream car: The T! Again, nice to see another generation enjoying this wonderful city. Thanks for posting.

My very first visit to Boston was 2004. I was so excited to be able to use Mass Transit, and of course, took out my camera to shoot video out the window on the Blue Line (little rickety bumper cars back then.) it was still so close to 9/11; a train Marshall told me to stop shooting. I didn't understand- guy was dressed in black, but no badges. Confiscated my camera. Until about 2008, they would announce over the PA that you were prohibited from taking photos, also the 'bag' warnings, and see anything 'suspicious' , report it. Considering the the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013 happened, the city's homeland Security probably prevented things that might have happened sooner. Btw, my first visit also encountered mounted police at/by the entrance/exit at Aquarium. I got my camera back, minus my memory stick. Now, a video like yours - just being able to make it is great. I've ridden on most of those lines...

The green line trolley moter sounds like R166 and R146 in MTA the T line train moter sounds like R179

For anyone confused on why there is a purple line with an engine car and double decker cars or whatever they are called it's actually a commuter rail. There are two big train stations where they end up in Boston which are south station and north station and there are about 8 different commuter rail lines in each one that go around the state. I take the Kingston Plymouth line from south station. Oh yeah there is also Amtrak and Acela there too. One of the commuter rails goes all the way to TF green in providence.
Now that goes to wickford junction which is soon to be going to Kingston RI
the yellow and white is the regular bus... the one with the poles is the trackless trolley. the blue and gray is the silver line (a different kind of service) that is a trackless trolley in the tunnel and a regular bus outside....
They're called dual-mode busses. They operate via line voltage thru the catenary while underground and then switch to diesel power once they operate above ground. that particular line the silver line goes underground from South Sta.(Amtrak) while in the business district then comes above ground and operates thru the Ted Williams tunnel en route to the airport.

They are, that is the mattapan line. I forgot what the type of train it is, but it one of the last places that still uses them
+jtl10777 I believe they are PCC cars (President's Conference Committee) They are former rebuilt Green Line cars.They have been used since the late 1940's
At 34:58 the Red Line 01800 is arriving in the background so the PCC sounds like a new red line car :P

@mrrockdaddy100 the blue and silver buses are called the silver line sl1 to sl4 and the yellow buses are the regular buses 1 to 500 something
I meant Transit, I'm orig. from Boston(hence the handle) and I visit Philly frequently though I have not rode the SEPTA as much as I'd like.
By the way, my favorite part of your vid. 18:36, those busted-ass Orange Line chimes LOL! Also the RTSs. There supposed to be gone by this summer 2013.

Boston just invested like 6 billion into our new transportation system for the next 5 years. Subway, commuter rail and bus will be on point we should be the best transportation system along with D.C, NY and LA by 2025

Went to Boston in "86 their was no dam Train Station, it was being rebuilt, Philadelphia still puts Boston in its back pocket!
Actually the MBTA has far more yearly ridership than SEPTA.

First, why are there buses with doors on both sides? Second, why do some buses (like sliver line buses) act like streetcars?

The buses with both sides are trolleybuses that run inside the Harvard Bus Tunnel. They are intended to be ridden on the right side most of the time but, because of the design of the tunnel, on the left side inside of it. These routes include 71, 73, etc.
The Silver Line routes are what the MBTA considers to be part of a Bus Rapid Transit system, though the buses do run in mixed traffic.
WHY ARE SOME OF THE BUSES YELLOW AND WHITE AND OTHERS BLUE AND GRAY? CAN U EXPLAIN
The silver line goes around the city and the yellow one goes to outer cities and towns
