    Instead of plywood, I upgraded my horrible tiled backslash with simple foam board cut perfectly to size. I covered it in bold wallpaper and attached it to the wall with two sided velcro command strips. The fake wall also hides the wires for the undershelf lighting (yes I used a wireless light switch - love those!). Because foam board is light, command strips hold it incredibly well!

      I am moving next month and have been trying to figure out how to have a colored wall without painting since that isn't allowed at my new place. I had been planning to go with P&S wallpaper but it will end up being really expensive and a pain to remove when I leave. This is an amazing hack you have come up with. And the command strips? What a great time saver! I do have one question though, as I would be using foam board for the entire wall: if you had to use more than one board, how were you able to avoid seams where the boards meet showing?

      How would one go about doing the foam board trick around the stove... I would imagine the heat from the stove is not great on foam board

    • @pamm2230
      @pamm2230 2 года назад +3

      @@MizzAriCast
      My thought is that the foam board is just a thin base on which to adhere your contact paper or backsplash covering material so that it us easily returned to the original renter space. There are great compand hook adhesive dots and straps that can be used instead of using contact paper directly onto the wall surface that can leave terrible paste residue that is very difficult to remove.

    • @MizzAriCast
      @MizzAriCast 2 года назад +3

      @@pamm2230 yes i love that idea and understand using it as a base. My question is would foam board as a base hold up on the wall behind the stove. My electric stove has one wall behind it and wonder if the heat that comes off it would damage the foam board i would adhere to the wall behind it. Any Thoughts?

      The literally do not care if the place enables them to rent it FAST, with minimal clean up or repairs. I hope the guy paid for the faucet & was grateful for the free labor. OH. MY. GOSH! You are amazing! You truly are a MacGyver! I loved so much about your video (so much that I subscribed and chose ALL for notifications--I loved how you described the various shortcomings of the space and what your solutions were to resolving them. I especially loved the wonderful filming that truly showed HOW you did what you did. I know you mentioned several times that these solutions resolve how to customize RENTAL spaces without permanently affecting the property, like how NOT to drill into existing walls but to use plywood "new" walls instead. My husband of 51 years passed away and there are things in my home I would like to alter to make them more usable for me. BUT...my husband did all those things and I don't know how. I'm absolutely terrified of trying for fear of damaging existing walls, cupboards, etc. I'm not a renter, but this is my home and if I screw up something I could cause permanent damage. YOU are showing others like me to try alterations YOUR way--your way doesn't damage existing structures, so if we get it wrong, we just take down the "non-fix" and start again--no worry about destroying our home. That is such a "freeing" feeling! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

    This is very cool! It's definitely a challenge when you can't put holes in the walls. I've been using free standing shelves for vertical storage, but lately have been considering doing something like "diawall". Basically you turn 2x4s into tension rods. And then you can build shelves or a wall onto them. It seems very customizable and people get pretty creative with what they can do!

      It's a bit unusual - that you can't paint or drill holes in German rental flats.
      You just put it back in its original state if you're moving out. Though it's frowned upon to paint dark tones you can't easily paint over. And drilling holes in tiles 🧐 - only when necessary.
      But the average time you spend in the same flat is also about 5 to 10 years.
      I think for students though it's a great idea - to individualize it.
      I liked the daylight lighting - though a way to protect it and diffuse light might be nice 👍

    I am still not over the fact that in the US you cannot renovate the space you are paying to live in. Where I live you can paint, make wholes and all, even put a temporary wall if you want as long as you leave it nice again when you leave. Which means before you leave you fill the wholes, paint everything back to white and you are out.
    However, given the circumstances this was a brilliant idea. It looks very nice. 😊 Covering the fridge was a very nice touch.
    Btw, it is called espresso 😊 without x.

    I did a faux arch on 2 floor to ceiling windows flanking my fireplace at an apartment I lived in several years ago. I used builder’s foam insulation panels (the pink foam at Home Depot) and it worked a treat! I used the bottom of a disposable lighter to score fake grout lines between “bricks” and used the cut-outs as the shutters. Painted it all and it looked amazing! I got so many compliments! I also “painted” my ugly wood kitchen cabinet doors and face frames by adhering tissue paper with liquid starch, then painting that white. When I was ready to move out, I just peeled all of it off and tossed it. I didn’t have issues with splashing food onto it, but if I had, I would have just had to replace it, but it was very easy to do so wouldn’t have been a problem. The knobs also helped to secure it.

    Loved the way you used the space above the sink, in Italy we have those drying racks built into the cabinet above the sink, I haven't seen those in any other country I've lived. It's such a great way to use that space and save time as the plates etc just live right there where they go to dry. And since it has doors like the rest of the cabinets (you keep them open while washing and close when done) nobody even sees the dishes on the rack. Some drip directly into the sink below and others have a slide in tray to catch the water.

    I’ve been in my rental apartment for 9 years and I didn’t spend a lot of time in my kitchen…till the lockdown. I’ve been looking into the removal wallpaper for the backsplash. You have inspired me!!!

    Love a lot of the ideas for a small space! I wouldn’t want to darken it like this. I need a bright space. I’d also want a tray to catch water under the dish drainer.

    Beautiful, and, at $9.66 sq ft the peel & stick tiles are def for impermanent, vs budget, projects. Well done!
