So first, not removing the merit of the local person that took you guys to try things, but when I visit Brazil I love Buteco Sao Bento for a cold Brahma Draft Beer, but not the best place to see the real deal food wise. Anyway so first things first, the most important thing on the "Caipirinha" the local forgot to mention. Caipirinha is the national brazilian cocktail, is basically made with 4 elements, fresh fruits, sugar, ice and Cachaca and this is important because Cachaca is the brazilian national spirit, also comes from sugarcane as Rum but has a more natural and raw flavor. Mandioca Frita is the Yucca (or as you correctly guessed the Cassava is another name, just as Manioc for this root) deep fried, you guys knew tapioca, so Tapioca is the starch from the Yucca/Cassava/Manioc. The pasteis as you guessed having similarity to the Chinese food, you also guessed right it has roots chinese and japanese roots as a brazilian lighter and flakier version of the dumplings and the best place to have a pastel with a sugarcane juice is virtually any Sunday morning farmers market that happens everywhere in the city. The Dadinho de Tapioca was created just a few kilometers from where you guys went by Rodrigo Oliveira the owner of the renowed and highly-awarded restaurant Mocoto on Vila Medeiros and regardless of its credentials the restaurant is remarkably affordable, he create it over 15 years ago the dadinhos and now is everywhere but there you could have tasted the OG and also some real traditional northestern brazilian dishes that he makes. Hope it was helpful. Dunno where you guys went next but def going to check the whole Brazil series and thanks for showing Brazil to the World!
