  • No I am not searching for the #lochness #monster but I was in #lockport #manitoba last weekend aiming to catch some of the big #catfish that call this river home.
If you get a chance to fish the #redriver for these cats here is the short list of equipment you will need:
*7-9' MH or H rod (I use a 7' Ugly Stik Tiger rod)
*large reel with sufficient drag (I use a Fin-Nor LT80)
*minimum 80 pound braid or 30 pound mono/Fluoro
    *sliding sinker 5-6 ounce
    *large BARBLESS circle hook
*large shrimp (my preference, any organic bait will work)
You can fish here in a boat but as long as you don't mind sharing space there is a mile of fishable shore line here. Minimal gear is really needed. Good Luck!

Good Luck! Early and mid September is usually a hot time for them. Hopefully many cats are still in the area, towards end of September the cats begin to move out and walleye and sauger start to move in. This year everything seems delayed however so it might be good.

Awesome. Yeah all i use is 30lbs braid with 20lb mono. I have a big salmon rod but dont use it anymore its way more fun catching them on lighter gear. If you catch some goldeye first it works amazing for bait so do 🐸.

First time I fished there I used frogs, they worked great. Shrimp is the best bait I've found so far though. They all work but I won't switch.
I like the heavier gear because I can put the muscle to the fish, especially when the current is heavy. Most of the time you fight a fish and the current pushes it straight to shore, but not near you... usually right in front of someone else fishing down river.

@@differentfins a lighter rod with 30lbs line you can still muscle pretty good. Shrimp is super productive. Goldeye is by far the best and frogs are better in the fall

@@prairiemountainmanadventur7424 goldeye is definitely the best cutbait for cats, sucker is pretty good too.

Wow it's empty there, used to it being shoulder to shoulder. Looks like you had a good time. I get away with 65lb braid though near the locks I'd opt for mono for abrasion resistance.

      @differentfins  3 года назад +1

Yes mono or fluoro is much better for abrasion but I had some heavy braid. Didnt need to cut any off but last summer I was hooking way more fish and had to retie after half dozen cats. It usually is shoulder to shoulder there but it was super early on a Monday. Hence the emptiness. Weekends is still crazy trying to get a spot there.

@@differentfins Oh yeah heavy braid is a must for our monster cats...and yeah that explains the emptiness. I generally avoid the locks unless it's early or night don't want to deal with all the cross casting. As for my lighter braid choice I tend to set my drag loose and even during the fight if the fish wants to run it's going to run and my 50lb mono leader does it's job of absorbing the shock of runs when I tighten the drag.

If you ever get to Manitoba you should try out fishing at Lockport. This was in summer. Go there in May or September and you could catch 30-50 cats like this. It's truly insane!

If only this spot was more accessible. I live in NW Ontario and maybe get to Manitoba 4 times per year.
