    This is the very first time that I hear 265H's sound. Definitely sounds like a GE or ALCO, but sounds more powerful. I am a fan of EMD 2-stroke, but I really love this sound. A bit pity for me that EMD's new 1010 is pretty much a quiet engine, but maybe a good news for engineers that drive them.

    • @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife
      @scenicdepictionsofchicagolife 2 года назад +11

      The 1010 is the same base engine (block I guess you could say) as the 265H. It is just an improved version. Think of it like the Honda J series engine family. Back in the early 2000s we had J30s and J32s. Now we have J35 and J30AC and so forth.
      The reason the 1010J is so quiet in comparison is due to the exhaust emissions scrubbing equipment. Also, if I'm not mistaken, new regulations have required newer locomotives to be far quieter because even noise pollution is a thing now and perhaps more importantly, crew health and safety regulations require less average decibels to prevent damaging hearing loss... so on top of the exhaust catalyst and DPF, I do believe there is an exhaust silencer. Also, the new traction alternator and AC drive inverter are extremely loud for some reason. Between induction noise for the turbos, the inverter, traction motors, new traction alternator, exhaust equipment, exhaust silencer, and even sound reading material in the long hood, you can barely hear the engines in these units unless you are literally in the cab.
      If you took all those new technologies off, it'd sound just like this test mule unit in the video. Oh, and even the fuel injection system and fuel pumps are so loud on these new units that it also contributes to drowning out the natural engine sound.
      I do think that these new units are cool though, and while I will miss the 710G dearly (it is and was my favorite prime mover, sounds incredible), I can totally understand the move to quieter locomotives. Even as a railfan, living near to mainline tracks (and even later on over a mile and a half away) you can still hear very loud locomotives and it is very intrusive. In railfanning, you don't mind it because that's what you're there for, but as free the 150th time a train passes when you're living by th tracks you realize why quieter trains are a necessity. Even quiet they are still cool. Plus, electrified trains (catenary) are even quieter but are still very cool to me. I bet you that at some point in our lifetimes the US rail network will be electrified. It just makes sense. (Not that I want that, diesel-electric is still way cooler to me personally).

      @@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife I've watched several videos about 1010J's idle. I also checked it out the one in your channel, sounds the same as other ones I have watched. I feel they are even quieter than GE. Currently I am curious about how 1010J sounds like in notch 8. I never find a video with clean sound, there always a GE or 2-stroke EMD and other noise like horns and bells going along with, they are so quiet that they sound like in DIT status in the consist.

      The only closest thing to the ALCO 251 series is actually the GE 7FDL's which literally are copied motors of them.This also explains why they still have mechanical unreliability and problems.
      The 265H's were motors of their own and by far the very worst,even more than the 7HDL's in the AC6000CW's.Even in the video the unit sounds like it's already going to tear itself apart at full throttle.
      CAT/PRLX's very mistake was bringing these motors back as the 1010J's for the SD70AH-T4's and ironically they also failed big time.

It doesn't sound like a "GE," it sounds like a four stroke because it is a four stroke and GEs, of course are also four stroke and are bound to have a sound signature not unlike this 265H engine. And at that, it's particular sound signature (four stroke or not) is unique to that of GE or ALCO. The 265H has its own sound. Unfortunately, the 1010J which is an upgraded version of the 265H has been made almost completely silent due to EPA Tier-IV emissions components so it doesn't matter anyway.

My point is people like myself who are passionate about certain subjects whether it be trains planes or automobiles usually research and try to get as much information as they can about it whether it's reading books magazines or in today's age online or actually if possible going and seeing the real thing in person. My diesel comment was to say I've been around a lot of different diesel engines and can usually tell what they are from a distance just from sound alone. For example a 2 stroke Detroit definitely has its own unique sound but doesn't sound anything like it's 4 stroke replacement the 60 series engine. 60 series have often been mistaken for CATs due to their low guttural growl but if you spend enough time around them you can quickly learn how to tell them apart. I sat through a presentation by EMD's chief engineer about the new 265H engine back around the year 2000 and thought it to be interesting.
    Was surprised to hear the engine was a failure in the field a few years later.
    And now they've developed it into the 1010, but can't get customers to buy it.
    Stick with the 2-strokes.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Год назад +2

      EMD's two stroke series became a thing of the past...
      Caterpillar is EMD's parent company and also owns PRLX.
      General Motors sold them,then came Greenbriar Berkshire,and then CAT/PRLX.
      Even though there is thousands of EMD units still present in Class 1 usage,they are greatly being phased out once their years are done in comparison to GE units and aren't compliant with these modern regulations.Less of the modern EMD units every time are getting rebuilt while GE rebuilds are starting to surpass.
      The problem with the 265H's was zero harmonic balancing which is why they had aggressive internal vibration and were literally ripping and tearing apart crankshafts,motor mounts,and any other critical components.The 265H's later on were improved and modernised but only saw prolonged usage in Asia,China,and India along with the alternative motors such as the 210H's that are still licensed under EMD.
      Caterpillar completely rebuilt the 265H's as the 1010J's in the SD70ACE-T4's as you've already said.The major differences are the fuel injection and crankshafts which needed correction.They even manufactured alternative versions of the same engine as the C280 in other apparatus.
      The 265H's were the only and last ever four stroke motors built by EMD and it was the only shot they had at staying in the market to meet emissions testing.
      The SD9043MAC convertibles were already debuted while EMD was still developing and rushing the 265H's.Only certain amounts of the SD9043MAC's in total from Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific were even converted and all within a few years if not less were scrapped or returned as EMDX units.
      The SD9043MAC's remained in service until their frames cracked and some of them from CEFX were on leases.
      There was 60 SD90MAC H2's from Union Pacific with four of them from Canadian Pacific.Most of them were also scrapped but some survived as exports to Australia to BHP Biliton.
      The SD70AH-T4's ironically were failures as well.Union Pacific purchased 90 of them while CSX ordered 10.They were primarily based on the prototype SD89MX which at best was ever leased to BNSF and remains today at CAT/PRLX as a testbed unit only.BNSF,KCS,and Norfolk Southern also had requests of SD70AH-T4's but canceled them.

    What were the biggest problems with this compelling prime mover? Was it rushed into production too quickly? Can the Cummins QSK95 save Progress Rail?

    • @WVS-KFD
      @WVS-KFD 8 месяцев назад

      They had to redesign and add more material, I think the redesigned engine version weighed in about 10,000 lbs heavier and this resolved piston issues. Computer control was not well designed for a lead locomotive but they seemed to do quite well as DPUs or second units. In the end, the use of 6000 hp in a car body was not practical for the railroads.

      Progress rail is a Caterpillar company. A direct competitor to Cummins.

      @@markrhuett Interesting, since it's the QSK95 that's the power plant in the SD70ACe-T4.

    • @markrhuett
      @markrhuett 7 месяцев назад

      The SD70ACE-T4 is powered by the 1010J, which is an updated version of the 265H in its 12 cylinder version, and not the QSK95. To my knowledge, no freight railroads are using the QSK95. Only the passenger locomotives such as the Siemens Charger units are powered by the QSK95.

    First time I encountered a pair of these in UP paint, I couldn’t get over the…..”interesting” sound of those prime movers. It did NOT sound anything like the typical turbocharged EMD 645 “purr” I was so used to. They sounded about as crappy as they were physically. Complete junk.

      Your confusing the original "265H" prime-mover, with EMD's new "1010J" engine. Either way, personally... I'll stick with the 2 Strokes!

      That's because it's NOT a 2 cycle (thank you - EPA!!! Not!!)..... this one is the "new & improved" 1010J engine, that is the seriously upgraded version of the 265H.... which was plagued with piston issues. as well as computer control issues... especially when positioned as a "lead" unit.... they were fine in DPU positions, other then the ongoing piston failure issue's. They've resolved all those issues, with the new 1010J prime-mover.
