This is why I love Tama so much, they put in just as much care into their "affordable" kits as they do in the high end kits. Of course Nick can make a trash can sound amazing so there is that also!!!
Feel the same way man. I've played the stagestar when I was younger, Swingstar, Rockstar, and worked my way up to Starclassic. Strongest name in drums!
I am 8 months into owning this kit. And it has been a joy to play them. Rock solid and so musical. Using an iron cobra 900 double pedal and the ic 900 hi hat stand and they just work. Put them where you want and they just stay there. The snare took me a bit to get it where I could use it as an everyday snare. I’m an acrolite long time user and the wood snare was a bit of a learning curve. The finish on these are just amazing. The finish has moods that change with every lighting situation. Looking forward to seeing how this kit ages. I’m sure it’s not going anywhere.
Came here because I own a superstar classic and I value Nick's thoughts and just love watching this guy have fun on the kit and talk about gear. Thx sweetwater🤟
Your playing is, as always, amazing!!! And this kit sounds really great. I like the sound without any dampening. Typical great TAMA quality. Very good value for your money! It’s the reason why I play Tama for 40 years now.
The bass drums on Tamas have always been cannons !!! I've played Tamas my entire life and this is my next kit in Blue Lacquer. They sounds really nice with Attack heads on the toms !!!
Experienced drummer here: Great quality and sound and I can imagine it with a 2ply deep sounding heads. For that 1000 price range brand new I'd buy this one over Pearl decade, Yamaha Stage and others. I've been a Sonor Phonic, Pearl x 3 Session/Masters/ Session Custom and now Tama Starclassic all birch db bass
I found one of these on craigslist for 500 bucks, I had to drive 3 hours in a snowstorm to get it but it was so worth it. Would highly recommend even for the full price, happily would've payed 3x as much as I did.
That bass drum sounds killerrrrrr. Love the tiny bit of rumbling resonance to it. Honestly Tama has killed it with this affordable midrange yet professional kit. I have the Tama starclassic bb hyperdrives which are my main kit and love it to death. Bought the Tama superstar classics as a gigging kit I can beat up and take the abuse and not worry too much. Got a 4 piece 2 up 1 down for 400 dollars from dales drum shop, opted to take out the snare drum to lower the price since I would never use it. It’s not near a starclsssic but for the price you can’t beat it! And it mostly comes down to feel, when you are playing in a live show, 99.9 percent of the people listening won’t be able to tell the difference between a 400 dollar kit and a high end kit but you can feel the difference in how the kit rebounds the Stick back and how robust the hardware is but man this kit has served me so well and would buy it 10 times over again. I prefer this kit over any other midrange kit and a lot of kits that are much more expensive from other brands
You chose wisely, mine came with the snare and it's garbage, but the rest of the kit is really great, and I have a Starclassic Birch to compare it to. There's definitely a big difference in the hardware quality but for the most part they're pretty high quality except for the snare of course. I really love the kick and the high toms.
Thanks Nick I just watched this video because I recently bought this shellpack with the Tama 4 piece low pitch octabons, MEINL dark classic extended cymbol pack, Evans reverse dot snare heads, Remo pinstripe tom heads, Aquarius kick head, Evans Black on the outside, all Tama road series hardware with iron cobra double bass pedals & hi-hat stabd, I've already been playing this awesome kit for 2 weeks straight with different variations it's so true for studio recording to go all open with this kit Tama has definitely maintained 1 of their grandfather classics, my 1st official performance in 1982 my hs stage band was behind a 5 piece superstar way to go Tama!!! everything you'll find from a DW performance series for thousands less, my grand total $5,592.64, the DW performance series set up like mine $10,786.79 just to compare & show that on a humble budget & raw talent you can sound just like the pro's without their bankroll ❤🥁😉👍
And I'm a proud owner for two years of this exact same kit in the same color and configuration. I put remo clear emps on mine with just a little moon jell in the right spots and boom. It sounds like the quality of a starclassic or star. Awesome Awesome kit! Very solid craftsmanship and that color, killer. I run the double 910 speed cobra's on it with Mienl byzance series cymbals. You just can't beat this kit for the money compared to any other brands on the market.
@@erictorres4889 it has plenty of resonance even with the slight dampening I'm using. The studio room I'm using is 16x16 so it sounds better dampened in a smaller space. If I'm playing in a big open space I could remove the dampening and it would sound better. Basically I'm turning and dampening my kit to fit the environment it's in. Small areas no damp it rings way to much.
I agree 100 percent with you on that I own these and they are awsome they sound as good as more expensive drums .except I have the 7 piece dark red sparkle.
Although these sound great, your kit was Tama's flagship of its day, and much better quality. All of Rush's albums from 1979 through 1987 was recorded with Neil's superstar drums. Also, your kit was made in Japan, where this one is Chinese made. You've done good in not selling them. Cheers 👍

My Pros & Cons: I like that this is a 7-piece kit at a great price. I also like the sizes of the toms and that there is a tom mount on the bass drum and the floor toms have legs. I find that configuration to be faster for me to set up than using floating toms mounted on stands, that sometimes get top heavy with the floor toms. However, I would prefer that it came with a 22 x 16 bass instead of an 18-inch-deep bass. I have an 18-inch-deep bass on my Tama Starclassic and a Pearl Session bass drum that is 16 inches deep on my Pearl set, and I find the shorter bass drum to be easier to move, carry, and take up less room in my vehicle, especially since I use cases. In fact, I miss my 14" bass drums that I had with my Ludwig set years ago. :-) I'm also not a fan of the finish, but the other finishes don't have the reduced price. Thanks for your demo!
