    5:15. That tressel was scetchy. Before the line was abandoned the engineer would stop at the bridge and walk across to the other side .the conductor would put it in first notch and let the train cross unmaned.Engineer would jump on then stop at the other end and wait for Conductor to walk across.

    This was such a great video to discover. I grew up in Accord NY, so I am very familiar with the Catskill Mountain branch and also the Rosendale trestle. Would there be lengthy videos of trains operating on the Catskill Mountain branch and more footage of the Rosendale Wallkill branch? I really enjoyed what you had in this video. Thank you.

    Ulster County (where I live) had this grand idea to allow pedal cars out of the Museum/Depot in Phoenicia. Idk how successful this first season was and I imagine groups of these cars could only run in one direction at a time and (perhaps) at someone else's pace. The Locomotive didn't see a spark all Summer. Someone in this County with deep pockets pushed this idea through to the detriment of the entire County. Too bad they didn't make it certain times with a train other times. Yes, the DURR is proceeding toward Pine Hill. It's too bad that the Catskill stops at the route 28 crossing. There's so much potential here.

    • @train5974
      @train5974 5 лет назад +1

      Train had more riders. Paid about 75 % less than the pedal cars.

      We have to remember that this is movie film. Film was expensive to buy and process and each camera roll only ran for a little over 3 minutes. This is why the scenes were selective when shooting - expensive and not a lot of run time

    Rust on the rail doesn’t mean deferred maintenance. Just means the line doesn’t see much traffic.

    • @DaimosZ
      @DaimosZ 4 года назад

      Indeed Deferred Maintenance means the complete opposite; track that is used so often it gets worn down to dangerous degrees but because deferred line hosts one of more key customers on their track and because it would be uneconomical to restore the route they have to use the worn track anyhow.

    It is sad that all of these short lines were not included in the USRA's consolidation plan, but with PC's bankruptcy and the overall awful conditions of US railroads in the mid-70s, they were just not profitable and therefore doomed to be trails. Sorry guys and girls; while we would love to see regular train service return to the branch, the economics just don't support it.

    • @gregrowe1168
      @gregrowe1168 4 года назад

      Too many railroads too. Now you only have a few. Csx,bnsf, Union Pacific, and Norfolk southern are the only big ones left in the USA. Locally here in Illinois, Canadian national took over for Illinois central about 20 years ago.

    • @spaceghost8995
      @spaceghost8995 4 года назад +1

      @@gregrowe1168 Right. Also I would add Kansas City Southern., CP and CN to the list.

    • @gregrowe1168
      @gregrowe1168 4 года назад

      Still only a few big railroads along with some local short lines. Back in the 60's and 70's you had dozens of railroads. Many were eventually bought out or merged with the big 4 I first mentioned. And many just couldn't make it and went bankrupt. I don't think railroads will ever become obsolete though because trucks couldn't replace the amount of freight they carry. And planes, though faster, just can't haul enough freight either. Ships will always be needed for overseas shipping as well.
