Thanks for a more updated view. Walter and Lao Russel were the stewards of Swannanoa starting in 1948 and brought it back to life as the home base for their University of Science and Philosophy with Walter's sculptures throughout the gardens and inside. Walter passed in 1963 at age 92 and Lao maintained the University and the grounds until she passed in 1988 at which time her organization maintained the palace and grounds until 1998.
Living in Richmond the past 35yrs and frequenting Maymont often in those 3 decades....I always wanted to find Swanannoa...........my little sister did, while it was run‐down/in limbo about 18yrs ago....(she lives in Charlottesville). November of 2009 is when I first got to visit.....no one around...no permissions My sister & my girlfriend and I walked all around. Saw the caretakers cabin..which was trashed....and I squeezed through the broken door to the tower and realized that it had 4 owls roosting......so we left them be.
