Thanks for posting the links to compare the old SSN to the new one! I was planning on getting it but this definitely changed my mine since it's obviously not the same polish.
Thanks so much for the review - this was important to see so I don't waste money! Maybe Essie thinks the next big thing for 2016 will be sheer polishes???
"trying to figure out exactly who's favorites these were" that comment was both lowkey savage, but also really true lol, like I only like 2 out of 6 (and was surprised that it hadn't officially released yet because I've seen them in stores, and snatched up starry starry night right away). I was hoping they would've brought back shine of the times but OH WELL. Thanks for mentioning that SSN isn't the same as the original btw, definitely going to check those blog posts out. Thanks for another great swatch and review video! I
When I heard that Essie was bringing back a few polishes I was hoping so bad that Shine of the Times would be one of them. I'm a little disappointed about the frosty polishes and the fact that they didn't bring back the original Starry Starry Night but the new one still looks nice. Nice swatch and review Jess!
Those sheer colors remind me of the toppers of French manicures that used to be very popular. Especially the pinky one. I'm just grateful how far polish has come haha
Totally bummed about all these! What is Essie thinking? I never buy any of their polishes anymore bc they always seem like something I've seen before! I wish they'd get it together🙄
You are right! The more I see them the more I wonder who was in charge of deciding which polishes should be chosen to be in this collection... SSN is the only one that caught my eye... The rest are so sheer and frosty ... What on earth?
+Adry Vg There is an interview with Essie herself online somewhere and she said in it that she is the one who ultimately decides which polishes go into a collection and she names them all herself as well. Which is why they never release yellows anymore, Essie doesn't like them! She said she started making polishes because what was available was so boring, but now so many of Essie's polishes are boring. All these with the exception of SSN are just typical Essie colours, hardly noticeable and too sheer. I guess she must think they look 'elegant' or something. Such a shame.
Eddie just hurts their own reputation putting out a collection lime this. I also feel like it's a bad publicity stunt, especially in the case of Starry Night. I own a handful of Essie polishes and am leary of most. I'm so grateful for your excellent reviews showing how the polish actually applies. You have saved me a lot of money.
I guess I am in the minority here! I love them! I am a bit older and find these very nostalgic! I agree about Starry Starry Night though. I don't own the original and wish it was an exact replica, but l also understand, especially with glitter polishes it might have been hard to duplicate the formula. It is still a beautiful polish nonetheless! Nice to hear your input on the collection!
+Nail Polish Nook nice to hear something positive about Essie polishes. Apart from the usual experienced manicurist technique of applying some of the polishes with bad formulas what other Magic is there that the rest of us need to adopt? when applying such colours that shrink, leave streaks, and need four coats to leave an even coat!
melanie mcginn I don't know if you were asking me directly, but when I am using sheer polishes, I use them for their intended purposes. I never try to get them opaque. A nice clean natural manicure. I try to start off with a good foundation to paint. To help the polish go on even I buff out any ridges and use rubbing alcohol to remove any residue dirt and oil. Make sure your nails are lint free and dry before you paint. As far as shrinkage I normally don't get that with Essie, but I do with other brands. To help, I wrap my tip with the polish and when applying a top coat (especially seche vite) I wait for my polish to dry completely.
I love them too, and I'm young! Sheer polishes always looked so much better to me. Everyone in the comments is being so snobby, saying things like these colors are for "grandmas" and whatnot. Well, if they want to say that, honestly I think girls that wear really bright colorful nail polish just look kind of tacky. Girls who wear it seem childish and lacking class.
thanks for you reviews on Essie, I have quite a few bottles out of which only two have good formulas! I wished I watched your reviews first before buying them. Bikini so teeny was the worst formula I have ever encountered and when I approached UK Essie they wouldn't hear of it! they wanted to send me the bottle back I told them to keep for themselves if they loved it so much! Essie also told me here in the UK that Essie bought in drug stores are a thicker formula and Essie bought in professional trade online is thinner formula which I disagree with that statement! The brushes are however different here in Uk than in US I am put off with Essie polishes, this is down to my own experiences with what I have purchased here and in the US.
I actually love sheer polishes! Plus, I refuse to ever do more than 2 coats of any polish so if my nail line still shows through, I really don't care. :)
Oh wow, okay. I was excited about these when I first heard the news, but it seems like they're not going to end up in my stash. I do think I will pick up Starry Starry Night; that was the only one I could see myself wearing. I mean sure, it's not as pretty as the original, but it still is a pretty polish. The fun thing is that I recently mixed a polish that looks very very similar to the original version, so I wouldn't have 'needed' it anyway. You mention a neon yellow at around 3:30, do you mean funky limelight? I still have that one, but I'm starting to run out. It was my first ever neon polish though! As always, thanks for sharing! :)
lol "still trying to figure out who's favorites these were". same. starry starry night is the only one I'll be getting from this collection even thought it's not the original, it's still a pretty polish
Hi! Could you point me to a video where you compare your favorite good sheer light colored polishes (like Birthday Suit but better, LOL). I prefer those for work but a good one is hard to find, one that isn't uneven, as you mentioned. Thanks! If you haven't done such a video, could you please? Thanks! :)
"I'd kind of like to know who they asked . . ." lmbo!!! my thoughts exactly!! aside from starry starry night, i didn't know that any of these were hugely popular in the nail community. they aren't horrible but some of these don't excite me at all.
+jessFACE90 thank you Jess, you are a star! Like you, I have a huge polish collection, and I bought the OPI Soft Shades mini collection earlier this year around springtime! Act Your Beige is in that, but I never got round to trying it. I'm definitely going to try this now!! Happy New Year to you!
Sometimes it's a little hard to get a true representation of the color through my monitor. Because of that, I'm wondering if sequin sash would make a good base for a french mani. It looks like it could on my laptop but, if I get it, it would be for that reason. Anyone have it along with their thoughts for using it for french mani?
I saw the first Starry Starry Nite and I have to say it's better than the new one only because I see that it coats well and it looks better too. Both are nice but I have to go with the original one. It looks Amazing.😄
I feel like the people who had the votes in for the majority of this collection were women who were probably young adults back then and still wear Essie now. I'm not sure if I could ever be nostalgic enough to want to bring back those awful sheer shades when there are so many amazing options these days. The only polish I bought from this collection was SSN. It's unfortunate, because I bet there were plenty of other polishes that could have been brought back that would have been better.
@jessface90 well having watched your review and looked at the 2 blog posts I think I'd rather get the Colors by Llarowe polish, I am not a fan of Essie, their formula doesn't appear to be consistent when compared to OPI or Zoya even Barry M in the UK has better formula, so for me that whole collection is a thanks but no thanks.
What was Essie thinking? These look like my Grammy's choices. I guess in the 80s, these will be fashionable. I'm older too. But these will not be my choices for favorites. Your swatches are great though. Love your channel and depend on your reviews.
Well the other polishes in the collection are totally..meh. But Starry Starry Night was so exciting! Until you said it's not a dupe, but I don't have the original so I don't have that to compare...but I am getting it because it is rather pretty.
The neon yellow you refer to, was that Funky Limelight? I keep hoping they will bring that back, along with Barbuda Banana. Unfortunately, Essie herself is the one who ultimately decides which polishes are going to be in a collection and she said she refuses to release yellows regardless of what anyone advises her, which is why she is known as "No yellow Essie" apparently. This collection is so disappointing and with the possible exception of SSN, just 'typical' Essie polishes. They are the sort of ultra sheer, hardly noticeable polishes that Essie is known for. Maybe she thinks they are elegant, I suppose they are in the right situation, but there are always so many like these. I used Peak Show last week and was so disappointed. I was really looking forward to using it, but the formula was terrible. I wondered if it was just being unlucky, as I thought it would be one with a good formulation. It will be my first negative review of anything, as I always try to see the good in things, but it was hard to with this one. So disappointing. I do like Essie polishes but a little fed up with the blandness of them. She said she started making polishes herself because what was available was so boring, the sad thing is that now Essie polishes are so often seen as boring! Great review and swatches.
+EveLang1 Thanks! Funky Limelight was the one! It's weird to me that someone would sell to so many different people but only make things that they personally like... I kind of hoped L'Oreal acquiring Essie would step them up a little, but it seems to have done the opposite in the last few years.
+jessFACE90 It seems as though Essie still has the ultimate say in everything herself & the last word on which polishes get released. She said she names them all herself, which is ok I suppose, but she came across in the interview as very stubborn and determined, which again is ok, I suppose, but as a business woman she ought to consider what the public might want. (According to her though, yellows never sell so she feels justified in refusing to release them, but I think if Essie released some yellows, with good formulas, they'd fly off the shelves!).
I quit buying Essie quite a while ago because its a crap shoot!! Why spend $8 - $9 bucks a bottle and it be crap. Not doing it anymore. I switched to Zoya. Zoya is cruelty-free too!!! Love that!
It was a good idea Essie but I would be more excited about the retro revival line if they had some better colors. Maybe this idea will rub off on Sally Hansen and they will do a retro revival of our beloved pacific blue :) thanks for the awesome video as always
I'm with the whole who decided to pick these colors group. I don't like sheers from Essie. They same to always be so streaky and of coarse the promo shots make them look like they have more coverage then they do. I'll be passing on this collection for sure. Thanks for the review it helped a lot
Loving the life of the party! I liked the sequin one aswell! I agree some weren't the best, but I do like Essie. This collection wasn't that great though...
Essie lets me down time and time again... I've stopped giving them anymore chances. Regardless of the rather disappointing polishes, I love the review!
I was thinking the same thing! Who on earth decided THESE were the colours to bring back? I wanted to see the bright yellow, Shine of the times, Punchy Pink... and of course the REAL SSN lol. What the hell, Essie! I bought the new SSN before I saw it wasn't the same... so annoying.
Essie's nail polishes are so overrated. They are always so sheer and just horrible. Most of the time showing brush strokes. Like seriously Essie can do better than that. And who even voted for these polishes. Hope Essie steps up their game for 2016
I think they got worst since they changed the formula, I used to be a big essie fan and loved the first nail polishes I bought from them and they still work and apply very well (some I have are out of production ex. Plaza sweet) but the ones I bought the last few years went gloopy just a few months after I bought them and the colour separates almost immediately! It also applies very thin and with lots of strokes :/
Thanks for the demo but I am not a fan of any of the retro line. Starry Starry Night had potential but I don't like the finish and I have Painted Polish, "buzzed on blue" which has a better finish. Happy New Year.
Like you I feel torn about "starry starry night". While its still my fave out the collection I'm still disappointed that its nothing like the original. Essie should be ashamed for this weak collection and for playing with people's emotions about SSN. Thanks for the heads up girl!!!
I've never been a fan of the sheer polishes ala Essie. On my ridged nails, the coats always looked uneven and not flattering. Considering there are so many pretty blue polishes, especially indie, I'm taking a pass on SSN.
Great review, this is definitely a stinker revival!! I think I'll pass on Starry Starry Night as well, Zoya's Dream & KB Shimmer's Carpe Diem seem like way better alternatives to me!:)
They did some sort of poll thing, not sure when, but clearly they didn't advertise it very well because I didn't know until I heard that SSN was coming back and I did a Google search on it. No one ever mentioned anything about it on Instagram, so I know I'm not the only one who was left in the dark. Like, they really should've sent some info out to swatchers like you, or polishaholic, etc. IDK why they didn't. And they could've at least said something about SSN being different. Essie, this did not endear you to our hearts. Staaaaaahp. This could have been so much cooler, Essie. Y u gotta do dis
+Patricia Peaden I'm thinking that they had 5 already decided, and picked the last one via the poll, which ended up being Starry Starry Night. There's no way those other 5 were voted in.
Even though it's not the same as the original, I still really like Starry Starry Night and will probably pick it up if I ever run across it. As for the other, ewww. Nope. Thanks for the review! :)
Aside from Starry Starry night, the rest of the polishes were C- polishes at best. Maybe they were awesome back in the day, but that's like trying to bring back bell bottoms cause they were hot stuff in the 70's. This was a very average collection. Thx for reviewing.
I don't like that just beceause Essie is popular (idk why, the formula is pretty bad, maybe for the bottle?) everyone loves it. Its not a good brand, i have 2 polishes and they are like 2 or 3 stars out of 5
I purchased a few essie polishes a while ago just for fun, and after about a week they all either got all lumpy and gross, or seperated completely no matter how much you shook it. It's either a hit or a miss with essie, mostly misses.
Before I saw you swatch SSN, I would have bought it if I could get it for the regular price or close to that. Now I don't want it and I wouldn't paint my nails with the rest of the collection if it was free. SSN is selling on Ebay for $20 to $50 per bottle and I see now, there's nothing special about it. My favourite ebay polish store that normally sells Essie's for $3.99 each had SSN at a starting bid of $29.99, I asked why, he said, "It is popular colour."
I am not really impressed with this collection. The red one is nice, and I would use the pink sheer one as a topper like you said, but a revival collection could be much better. Anyway, great review as always !
I would also love to know who 'ok'd' all these re-releases. Pearl shimmer is just... not my cup of tea. At all. In fact I don't think it's really anyone's cup of tea, haha! Every polish except for Starry Starry Night is not really worth grabbing imo.
Me too... I bought the new starry starry night, applied it and found out that it's different from the original version. Kinda disappointed :( I can't believe there are so many frostys in this collection. They are pretty ugly....
I just don't understand this collection! Who's great grandmother did they poll for this "rival" collection? The frosts, just ugh! Then we get to starry starry night which is the best of the six, but completely different from the original! Ladies if you're looking for a close second to the original cbl twinkle twinkle star or night is the closest.
Man, this collection is crap. Seriously, besides Starry Starry Night (which isn't even the same as the original), who asked for these polishes? Does anyone really consider them favorites? Essie really blew it with this collection.
I was so stoked when i heard they were bringing back starry starry night its nice but not the same as the original the rest of the shades r not my cup of tea at all not digging the sheer frosty shades essie wtf
I understand that they're 'retro' but I think they're retro in a really tacky and cheap way. Sheer frosty polishes.... Come on! This collection screams grandma to me.
I thought I wanted Cabana Boy based on the color (I love anything even slightly grey), but if the application is like that even with your expert hands, yikes! No thanks.
i love all these colours SOO much omg
Thanks for posting the links to compare the old SSN to the new one! I was planning on getting it but this definitely changed my mine since it's obviously not the same polish.
I love these, I'm ordering them now! I prefer sheer polish anyways, I don't see what everyone's complaining about.
Even in the old days, Essie was either opaque or sheer af
These are not the exact formulas from the old days, they reformulated them
Thanks so much for the review - this was important to see so I don't waste money!
Maybe Essie thinks the next big thing for 2016 will be sheer polishes???
+Artbug haha, maybe!
"trying to figure out exactly who's favorites these were" that comment was both lowkey savage, but also really true lol, like I only like 2 out of 6 (and was surprised that it hadn't officially released yet because I've seen them in stores, and snatched up starry starry night right away). +Bayley Dathorne I so wanted sott i only have one bottle
+Bayley Dathorne Thanks for watching! I think Shine of The Times went away because the flakies used in it were discontinued :/

I know a lot of people don't like theses colors today, but they were extremely popular when they came out originally.
I wish they would bring back shine of the times
+Jackie Hernandez I think the flakies they used in that polish were discontinued..I doubt we'll see that one again :(
Thank you for a great and honest review and for the blog link.
+Maremoto Thanks for watching!
Other than the blue one, those are the most boring shades ever and so sheer! Who chose these as favorites? lol
+kayla patterson Right?!
I like them
well they're retro and that's how seriously all nail polishes were back in the day- sheer and a lot of time frosty af. even in the 90s. so I get it
Actually these color are my color.. But the formula tho.. Horrible!
kayla patterson I kinda like the red one (life of the party) but the rest of the shades other than the blue one are boring
I love frosted nail polishes 💙
Totally bummed about all these! What is Essie thinking? I never buy any of their polishes anymore bc they always seem like something I've seen before! I wish they'd get it together🙄
+Liz Monahan I'm still holding out for a better Essie in 2016..after this that is..lol

The new version is not the same as the old version

Love that!
Zoya is really good.
It was a good idea Essie but I would be more excited about the retro revival line if they had some better colors. Maybe this idea will rub off on Sally Hansen and they will do a retro revival of our beloved pacific blue :) thanks for the awesome video as always
+LexiLouxoxo Thanks for watching!
hello :-)
could you please recomand me some color changing nailpolishes?
did you use a topcoat for these swatches
+Maryam Fatima no, but when the pictures were taken the polishes weren't completely dry.
+jessFACE90 ok thanks😊
I got a gel polish manicure yester day
+tuan nguyen Cool!
Why are the nail polishes so expensive?? I don't get it.
I'm with the whole who decided to pick these colors group. I don't like sheers from Essie. They same to always be so streaky and of coarse the promo shots make them look like they have more coverage then they do. I'll be passing on this collection for sure. Thanks for the review it helped a lot
+Samantha Shira Thanks for watching!
Loving the life of the party! I liked the sequin one aswell! I agree some weren't the best, but I do like Essie. This collection wasn't that great though...
+Passionfruitpavlova Thanks for watching!
I'm right there with you. Who the heck picked THESE... regardless, I appreciate your review & video :)
+Meagan Ashburn Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed them all!
I imagine a panel of old ladies selecting the colors, judging by the frosty and pearl shades XD (not trying to be offensive)
+sherrie nostromo haha...clutching their pearls at the though of a neon yellow.
Essie lets me down time and time again... I've stopped giving them anymore chances. Regardless of the rather disappointing polishes, I love the review!
+GoForACashew Thanks for watching!
+catherine rene This could have been SUCH a good collection...they really blew it.
'birthday suit' reminds me of something I shouldn't say when 11 year olds are watching 😂
+Sophie Rimmer Thanks for watching!
Essie's nail polishes are so overrated. They are always so sheer and just horrible. Most of the time showing brush strokes. Like seriously Essie can do better than that. And who even voted for these polishes. Hope Essie steps up their game for 2016
+Miranda Mejia I hope so too!
Agree 100%
I think they got worst since they changed the formula, I used to be a big essie fan and loved the first nail polishes I bought from them and they still work and apply very well (some I have are out of production ex. Plaza sweet) but the ones I bought the last few years went gloopy just a few months after I bought them and the colour separates almost immediately! It also applies very thin and with lots of strokes :/
I agree like 10000%
Most of them turn out looking pretty nice and seem to form nicely but they scrape off so easily
Thanks for the demo but I am not a fan of any of the retro line. Starry Starry Night had potential but I don't like the finish and I have Painted Polish, "buzzed on blue" which has a better finish. Happy New Year.
+L f Happy New Year!
I started lol when u said u wondered who they asked who's favorites these are, cuz for sure they aren't really my cup of tea!!
+Jayme Wukmir haha, Thanks for watching!
Wait, you live in Michigan?! Where in Michigan? I live in Freeland.
+NelsonSongSinger Nelson No way! I'm in Mt. Pleasant.
***** That is awesome!!!!
They reuse a lot of colors, so at least this time they're admitting that they are 😂
+Victoria Roderick No kidding lol
Like you I feel torn about "starry starry night". While its still my fave out the collection I'm still disappointed that its nothing like the original. Essie should be ashamed for this weak collection and for playing with people's emotions about SSN. Thanks for the heads up girl!!!
+A.Sweetheartxo Thanks for watching!
Aw man, I was so excited for Starry Starry Night! 🙁
+Heather McGinn Thanks for watching!
I've never been a fan of the sheer polishes ala Essie. On my ridged nails, the coats always looked uneven and not flattering. Considering there are so many pretty blue polishes, especially indie, I'm taking a pass on SSN.
+Angela Archer Thanks for watching!
Great review, this is definitely a stinker revival!! I think I'll pass on Starry Starry Night as well, Zoya's Dream & KB Shimmer's Carpe Diem seem like way better alternatives to me!:)
+Amy Galli Thanks for watching!
Who's favorites are these? 😂😂
+Nails by Lizzie Thanks for watching!
You're welcome u loved when you says that, always being honest
Essie, what the heck!? Somebody dropped the ball here!
+Mandy Roy Thanks for watching!
+jessFACE90 That sounds about right. :/ So disappointed.
It would have helped if you had applied a white nail polish underneath them
You shouldn't have to do that though.
Even though it's not the same as the original, I still really like Starry Starry Night and will probably pick it up if I ever run across it. As for the other, ewww. Nope. Thanks for the review! :)
+Jenny Mullins Thanks for watching!
Life of the party is like Wrapped in rubies except wrapped in rubies has a gold shimmer
+Kiran Hart-Abraham Thanks for watching!
Aside from Starry Starry night, the rest of the polishes were C- polishes at best. Maybe they were awesome back in the day, but that's like trying to bring back bell bottoms cause they were hot stuff in the 70's. This was a very average collection. Thx for reviewing.
+Jennifer Adams Franklin Thanks for watching!
I like starry starry night and life of the party the others are a bit too sheer for me
+NILUFAR AZAD Thanks for watching!
Gracious! Why bring back such basic colors! Def not on my to get list! Nice review though!
+BACK2MACCHICK Thanks for watching!
EYE OF COPERNICUS NAIL POLISH is a dupe for the original ssn
+mycrazynan Lol, definitely not worth more than retail. It's a nice color, but not worth the hype IMO
+jessFACE90 You Jess, could easily make a much better version.
I am not really impressed with this collection. The red one is nice, and I would use the pink sheer one as a topper like you said, but a revival collection could be much better. Anyway, great review as always !
+lilacchelly Thanks for watching!
I would also love to know who 'ok'd' all these re-releases. Pearl shimmer is just... not my cup of tea. At all. In fact I don't think it's really anyone's cup of tea, haha! Every polish except for Starry Starry Night is not really worth grabbing imo.
+Sydney W Thanks for watching!
I like Starry Night and Birthday Suit!!!! The rest I thought were kinda 'blah.'
+Elizabeth Smith (elizabethpaintshernails) Thanks for watching!
Me too... I bought the new starry starry night, applied it and found out that it's different from the original version. Kinda disappointed :( I can't believe there are so many frostys in this collection. They are pretty ugly....
+Hsuan Chen Thanks for watching!
+Myishia simmons Thanks for watching!
I love in Michigan
Awesome!
Live
Maybe these were the most sold polish in their year, and people decided to just pick random years.
+Kimmie Sevy Maybe!
+RACHEL KERR Thanks for watching!
what the hell were they thinking?
+Nefertiti7070 I don't think they were! lol
well that was disappointing... thanks for the swatches though!
+Vera Filippava Thanks for watching!
Obviously people with a lot of time to sit around and do 4 coats voted for this crap. Lol 🙄😤😏 great review though. Thanks 😘
I understand that they're 'retro' but I think they're retro in a really tacky and cheap way. Sheer frosty polishes.... Come on! This collection screams grandma to me.
+Kayla P (kaypoll) Thanks for watching!
Lol "who decided?" Indeed.
+Naima Dillard Thanks for watching!
I thought I wanted Cabana Boy based on the color (I love anything even slightly grey), but if the application is like that even with your expert hands, yikes! No thanks.
+shortnailswatcher Thanks for watching!
how did I end up here I was watching a gaming Pewdiepie video
Anyone else kind of shocked that Essie has been around since the 80s?
Also I feel like all of them, except the blue, just look like the same polishes from their bridal collections they have every year. boooooooring.
