What Happened to the Old German Flag?

- Today, German football fans proudly daub their cheeks black, red and gold, though back in the days of the Old German Empire, the tricolour was one of black, white and red. So why did the flag change from the one to the other, and what's the origin of both of these flags?

The old flag is my dad and he died and i became the flag thats how
He didn't die, that's the curiosity, it is mere a kind of deep sleep, waiting to be used again when the sons flag will vanish from use. Which it will on occasion, because it represents today something the people believe to be a state, but which is merely a fragmentary state-like object, as it was invented to be by the Allies, commercially exploiting what is left of the German Reich of 1871. Which is constituted today, that's the hidden flaw, as a commercial company following tradelaw (Handelsrecht), while the Reich of 1871 is totally out of any activity. All it's predecessors were fragmentary state-like objects, because none of them, the Weimar Rep., Nazi Germany, the occupationzones after the war, GDR and FRG, as well as the reunited FRG after the reunification, have ever had a full constitution, voted for by the people, only some shady basic law (Grundgesetz), by this lacking the qualitiy of a full rightfully successor of the German Reich from 1871. By this a non-nation in essence, it is a shame and a flaw waiting to be corrected...likely out of tremendous pain, because all forces within and without Germany try very hard to keep this correction down, because all profit commercially from the FRG in one way or the other.
That is why Germany pays for all and everything, that is why the people are taxed up to the tits, that is why poverty is rising throughout Germany, why the EU was invented and so on... not as a peace project, but as a power project sucking out the lifeblood of the german people, after and in retaliation of the mess of the 20th century.

Correction: The Bundesrepublik always used the plain black, red and gold banner. The flag with the emblem you showed is and always has been reserved for governmental institutions and is called the "Bundesdienstflagge" (federal services flag). The escutcheon there also differs from the German coat of arms. You see German flags with the coat of arms for sale to private people, and that is not an official symbol, hence tolerated; it does look similar to the Bundesdienstflagge though, which is not to be flown by private entities.
It's worth mentioning that the official flags of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland were the same as they are today, the version with the eagle (which is different to the eagle in the official coat of arms BTW) is also used, but just by the government.

@@tiagomonteiro161 are you even German?
Sorry, but there are some huge mistakes in the video. The entity founded in 1816 was the German Confederation, and it didn't have a flag, only a coat of arms. (Which was similar to the old imperial coat of arms since the Confederation ("Deutscher Bund" in German) was some kind of replacement to the HRE). In 1848, the Confederation was disbanded in the wake of the March Revolution. The St. Paul's church assembly in Frankfurt then chose the Black-red-Gold flag as the symbol of the new german nation state it tried to establish.
After the revolution had been crushed, the German Confederation was re-established in 1850. It was dissolved for good in 1866, when it's members turned on each other in the Austro-Prussian war. The Prussians THEN founded the North German Confederation ("Norddeutscher Bund") in 1866/67 to assure their dominance over the smaller northern states. Thre NGC then adopted the Black-White-Red flag. After the southern states (except for Austria, who's alienation to the german unification process had been the whole point of Prussias scheming) joined the NGC in 1871, it was transformed into the German Enpire, which kept the Black-White-Red flag.
After that point, Black-Red-Gold was associated with liberalism and republicanism, while Black-White-Red was associated with conservatism and monarchism. No wonder that the Weimar Republic adopted Black-Red-Gold as it's flag in 1918/19 - and no wonder that the Nazis brought Black-White-Red back in 1933, keeping the old Imperial Flag for a few years to appease their conservative allies. The two new german states founded in 1949 adopted (no surprise) Black-Red-Gold, because they saw themselves as part of the democratic tradition - although the GDR was democratic only in name.
I thought so. Thank you. I unsubscribed to that channel.
He kind of just skipped over what happened in the revolution.
@@pierre976 Yes, that is a very poor video
And most importantly the flag of the BRD did never featured the eagle. There was no flag change in 1989. The Grundgesetz (German constitution) from 1949 states „Die Bundesflagge ist schwarz-rot-gold.“ which translates to „The federal flag is black-red-gold.“ The german flag with the eagle is only a symbol auf government institutions and it‘s still in use.
Woah 200th like
Brilliant. As a German and lifelong history affecionado (spelling?), I am impressed. It is rare to find someone on here who speaks about history without factual errors, or at least very, very heavy simplifications and a slanted angle of view. Very well done, thank you.
To be honest, this video has errors at every corner.
The German “Bundesdienstflagge” (federal service flag, the one with the government coat of arms) is not the same as the Bundesflagge (federal flag), and is _still in use today_, but it should normally only be used by the government itself. Misuse can be punished as an administrative offense, although some exceptions are made, when it is clear that the flag could not possibly be mistaken for official government use and it was not being used offensively, such as by sports fans during events.
While the government coat of arms provided a more clear contrast of a West German flag from the East German flag, West Germany _still even at that time_ expected civilians to generally only make use of the Black-Red-Gold flag, without the coat of arms. Essentially little has changed with regard to flag use by Germans in West Germany since the establishment of the flag in Article 22 of the Basic Law in 1949 as “schwarz-rot-gold” alone.
Curious as well, from 1949-1959, East Germany also used the bare Black-Red-Gold flag.

Lotnik Red is good
Thats not the meaning of the german flag tho. The idea that the german flag originated from the lützowerian freecorps is a widely spread myth. In actuallity the colors black, red, and gold, were strongly asociated with germany in the 19th cenutry due to the fact that these were the colors used by the HRE. And back then the HRE was something like a pseudo german empire and has been for centuries. We remember that in the 15th century italy has left the HRE, making it only consist of german states. So the black, red, and gold flag of germany is simply the flag of the HRE made into a tricolor.
@@rewjik7998 Belgium has the same colours
The richness of the earth/soil/forest/coal energy source, black;
The vitality of its people, work energy and self-discipline, and the blood of Jesus the grace that overcomes and saves, red;

I doubt it. As long as it's clearly educational (and the display of a flag doesn't get any more educational than in a video explaining the history of a flag) showing a swastika should be fine.

Very interesting video btw..
The empire's flag is far easier on the eye, providing a nice contrast between adjacent bands.
The modern flag is a punch to the eye by comparison, with the red not providing enough contrast with neither the black or the gold.
Quick example how contrast can make or break a flag. Imagine the Italian or French tricolours, with the red as the middle and the white as the right. Or the British Union Flag with any two colours swapped. White is a great buffer colour in flags, it lets you switch to anything right after.
In Germany, we believe aesthetics to be secondary.
Maybe if yellow was in the middle, like a horizontal countwrpart to Belgium...
The "modern" flag was chosen due to its symbolic character.
The more aggressive, the better the flag. Uganda did it right.
Don't sound so smart, it's largely a matter of taste. I'm an artist and I prefer the black/red/gold. It's harmonious.

@@Wesley_H im not that proficient in US-Geography, care to elaborate further?
Steffen Ebener Sure. To compare to the original comment of Dutch being swamp Germans and Germans being mountain Dutch, Louisiana has swamps and Colorado has mountains. As far as hilly areas are concerned, I dunno there are probably a lot.
5:36 That's not correct. The flag on the left is the "Bundestdienstflagge" meaning that it is used (even today) by official representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany, e.g. on the mudguards of the President's limousine. The state flag in the west has been black, red, gold since 1949 while the GDR distinguished itself with a hammer and circle.

A lot of mistakes in this video. A couple of corrections:
0:38 as you can see in that picture the colors Black, Red and Gold were already used. The eagle is black, has a red beak and is displayed on gold.
0:51 the Lützow Freikorps was small and military insignificant. Even at its peak it had less than 3500 men and most of them didn't even wear that uniform. The unit did have many students that continued to wear the uniform when they returned to the universities also a couple of poets served in the unit.
1:17 That is really, really wrong. What you mean is the "Deutscher Bund". The "Norddeutscher Bund" was founded in 1866. The "Deutscher Bund" did include all German states including pars of Austria, most of Prussia and even Luxembourg.
1:30 No, only very few members of that fraternity were actually members of the Lützow Freikorps
1:48 That picture was colored years later. The only surviving flag (Abreschs „Ur-Fahne“) already shows the colors like they are arranged today. Several other flags were also used though.
2:20 They did try to form a unified German state at that pint though which already used the Black-Red-Gold flag but the flag failed when the Prussian King refused to accept the crown of the Empire. It was never officially dissolved but simply seized to exist when the big German states ignored it and helped the rulers of the smaller ones to return to power.
2:35 Not exactly. Those were the dominating states, but they were not the only German states. At least 30 more.
2:53 Really? As far as I know displaying the colors was even illegal in Austria.
3:09 That is not the imperial eagle (look at the crown!). It is the Prussian eagle. It originates from the imperial eagle because the Emperor allowed the Hochmeister of the Deutscher Orden to display the eagle in his shield.
3:35 Yes and No. They used it to create the flag of the Norddeutscher Bund in 1866 and kept it in 1871 when the south German states joined.
4:09 the Black-White-Red flag remained in use as the flag of the Merchant Navy and the Naval ensign (in several designs). The colors remained also as the war ensign, again in several designs.
4:11 No, not really. Both states were republics though.
4:52 Puppet government? The government was democratically elected by the German people.
5:31 That on the left is the Federal Service flag and only used by Federal agencies like the federal police, the Bundeswehr and federal ministries. The national flag was and is simply Black Red and Gold.
5:45 The reunification was 1990 and since the states of the DDR joined the federal republic the state and the symbols remained the same.
Maybe you should pin this.
4:11 a joke. You call it oligarchy.. Like Russia today.
That’s few likes for so much knowledge
3:08 it's not the Emperial German eagle but the Royal eagle of the Kingdom of Prussia.

Good Video, but i have to do some nitpicking. The West German Flag was just black, red and gold. The flag with the coat of arms is used by federal authorities, e.g. the military.
And since post 1990 germany is the same as former west germany the flag has also stayed the same.
Plus the DDR existed untill 1991, as did their official flag.

The key question - why - wasn't answered. We learned when, how, who and what, but not WHY.
because blackredgold was an ideal that couldnt stand against monarchy and monarchy was basically what started ww1.so only after it finally turned out for most that monarchy isnt such a good idea for the People, we got blackredgold for a while during this brand new Thing called Democracy.then, thanks to being defeated in ww1 and its aftermath, People havent been happy about things not becoming better for everyone, besides the great Depression swapping over from the u.s. made all even worse, so you can imagine that the majority fell for the big words of a certain austrian with an ugly mustache, which then again took blackredgold away.but i just realised i answered your question already with the monarchy-winning-over-blackredgold-waving-people Thing.cheers

At an exhibition I visited in Greifswadl many years ago attributed the origin of the present colours to the University of Jena where the students wore black blazers with red piping and brass buttons.
Do please the white flag of France, and how it changed to blue, white and red
And maybe also how the Fleur-de-lis became more and more the quintessential French symbol.
It’s quite simple actually. The colour white was a symbol of the French monarchy, and in the French Revolution the flag of Paris (red and blue) was used commonly. After they realized they needed an actual flag, the chose the tricolour symbolizing the French monarchy being crushed by the red and blue
Because they didn't want Poland's flag in theirs for their future invasion to be ironic >.>

No Napoleon no Germany. Ironically his nephew Napoleon the third was screwed by that during the Franco Prussian war
@Fabian Kirchgessner Very true. It would be an interesting what if scenario.
Funnily enough, he willingly let them unite as he wanted a strong German state to counter British influence on the continent and he had hoped peaceful relations with that State on the account that he didn't prevent it's formation
And even after the crisis that would start the Franco-Prussian war had begun, he wanted to settle the conflict peacefully by organising an international summit but the parliament (which is the same one that was not only voting against increases in the military budget for years but also voted for decreased military budget) pressed him into war. And note, the same people that pushed in for a war they themselves made almost impossible to win would later on form the Republic and blame the Emperor and the generals for the defeat, they did what's called a pro gamer move
Why are you reading this ? Throw your country under the bus for political gain. Sounds like a French politician thing to do. He should’ve pulled a Palpatine and abolished the senate.
