Being an ex-foster, the best thing you can do for momma is sit with her, to your back to her and let her come to you. You can occasionally give treats. Do not make eye contact with her, it’s very intense and intimidating for them especially with everything she’s gone through. What handsome little boys!

he doesnt read his comments , i gave advice on two videos now which could have saved the puppy that died , instead of getting the puppy to the vet or staying home with it giving the sick puppy syringe feeding and glucose he went out and socialised instead , unfortunately part of rescuing is staying home with sick animals , i know he means well but he shouldn't take on such hard cases if his not willing to put the effort in.

Hi Joey, please read for suggestions and tips!! The work you're doing and the effort you are putting into these sweet dogs are gold, and I appreciate you so much for this.
I know the mom might seem dramatic from our point of view, but you need to remember everything she's been through, stuff we might never know. She's probably had very little to no human contact, she's had a very traumatic, stressful life, now she's been moved to a new weird place where she knows nothing, and she's probably scared for her life. It's clear that she's under high amount of stress. The stress in the mother will affect the puppies as well, so it's very important to not let her get exposed to unnecessary stress.
It is great to socialize the puppies, they are in a development phase where it's important for them to get used to humans and everything life has to offer. All though for the mother, please give her more time to adjust to everything new to her.
They need a space in their pen where they can feel protected, she will be absolutely too stressed in a space that big and open. Please give her a safe space and give her time, it's the best you can give her. You could alsoe try calming pheromones such as “adaptil” which are meant to lower the stress for dogs. You can buy it as a diffuser or a collar. I would assume that she's too stressed to accept food from you, but eventually you can start working with high-value treats as well.
You can sit in her pen to make her used to your presence, but please don't force her when it's not necessary. And please give her a place in the pen where she can feel protected and where she feel she can protect her puppies.
Even though you are kind, she might not know kind yet. She's not dramatic, she's traumatized, and she need your help to feel safe.
I appreciate what you do so much! Just a little advice from me

My grandma had similarly traumatized dog and nothing helped but lot of time and treats. Placing treats on the ground, eventually on grandmas foot and the dog was always the one determining how close she gets to a human.
These dogs are extremely traumatized and forcing contact could traumatize them even more. Specially Mama. She's an adult dog, her behavior is basically set from the puppy hood.

There are several great recommendations already in the comments (giving them bedding to burrow in, come in with treats, etc.) the other thing to remember is there are several reasons why a chihuahua will shiver/shake (high metabolism, excitement, being cold) as well as health conditions. Where these poor pups (momma included) are results of inbreeding in the hoarders home, there may be lots of reasons these littles are trembling. Continue to give them your love, patience, and a little treat. ;) You're doing good work.

    Suggestions:

    2) consider non destructive puppy toys
    3) consider a couple washable round doggy (or cat) beds with a receiving blanket for in a corner
    4) consider stationary low bowls with water & start offering warm water soaked puppy kibble 3 or 4 times a day (as you may know, toy dogs are susceptible to low blood sugar- which can be deadly)
    5) consider working with mom & Auntie 5-10 minutes prior to feeding (when they are hungry) and bribe with pea sized treats (Pet Botanics & BilJac have tiny treats)

I've been obsessed with Greek mythology (especially the stories of Icarus and Circe) recently, so my vote's on Greek mythology inspired names!
Edit: I also think some sort of comfortable area like a dog pillow or bed to hide behind or on top of would be very positive for Mama. Chihuahuas are small dogs and therefore are a lot more intimidated by you than the others, and they also are naturally more independent and often shiver on the regular. I've also seen some other people recommend treats and I second that! Lots of chihuahuas are food motivated.

I would suggest getting them a nice bed and putting a blanket or towel over one side (kinda like a tent) so they feel secure with more space while putting the bed underneath it. Keep their food, water, waste mats and any toys on the other end to get them to move about. Also with the mamma- spend ANY free time you have just in there not talking, or moving or vlogging. Play some Minecraft or do work on your phone or computer; it’ll get her used to you being around and she’ll warm up to you eventually. It’s important not to leave her without somewhere for her to hide, she’ll panic and associate you with being out in the open and in danger. Best of wished to you all! Since these are chihuahuas, they are so temperamental. I've had my chihuahua for 9 years and she still runs for the hills whenever she is the slightest bit uncomfortable. Also the shaking is just their natural state of nervousness - and completely normal since they are getting used to the new space still. My little puppers shakes whenever she is cold (which she is very easily cold, always give them a blanket to curl up under incase they are cold), scared, nervous, or knows she did something bad and doesn't want Mama to find out.

Awe those puppies are able to bounce back quicker because they haven't had to endure as much of that torture. The momma has literally been a bred and abused her entire life. She deserves all the time she needs warming up to you. Its not your fault that she's afraid. Just trust her. Give her the time she needs. I find it truly amazing that you are trying to help these dogs. People in your financial situation often don't care enough even to donate to these babies. Thank you for sharing the journey so that others might follow suit. I've chosen to make my life about dogs. But you have to really learn their personalities and understand them and get on their level to give them what they deserve. They deserve to be shown love and understanding. Not forced to do whatever we want them to. This is our mess to clean up and I'm so glad you're contributing to the solution.

Thank you for helping these poor pups! A suggestion to help the mum feel more comfortable: throw a blanket of some sort over one of the corners against the wall, so it creates like a little fort and blinds the corner from the see-through walls. I have not fostered dogs but I have fostered over 20 cats and such open spaces make them more nervous. So maybe one corner that is not actually closed off but just a bit darker where she would feel more secure would help. And treats! I would also put down some folded towels for a nice sleeping place that is also easy to clean. Love you ❤

A little tip to get them used to you…just sit in there with them for a bit each day and do ordinary stuff like go on your phone or read a book and ignore them but just so they get used to your presence and over time they’ll know you don’t mean them harm and they’ll warm up to you in no time ☺️✨

Yea Joey the mom is quite traumatized, you'll need to be very patient with her and slowly acclimate her to human touch and presence, preferably avoiding eye contact and excessive picking up as that intimidates a lot of animals. Also shaking (though not to the extent the mother displaying) is a common feature in Chihuahuas and other small breeds. You can thank us lovely humans for creating breeds with genetic conditions/mutations in various severities for our esthetic pleasure.

@jaimeechols8020 YES! That is great advice for Joey! Please just put your back to her and let her come to you on her own time and be patient. She might not come to anyone for a few days even but still be patient and let her learn that she can trust you on her own time. She is beyond terrified rn and what she needs most is time to realize she's safe now but don't try to force it on her. Dogs communicate in dog language which is like +90% body language and eye contact, so try not to talk much either and she will eventually realize that you speak her language and will trust you easier. Joey, you might benefit from doing a canine communications course or research and it will help you in future rescues too! A good way is to approach this whole subject like you're visiting a country where little English is spoken so you will have faster success by learning their language instead of trying to teach them how to trust you plus your own human language at the same time. Put yourself in the dog's little world of fear and difficult communication barriers. She's dealing with trauma and the last thing she needs is to learn how to communicate with human language. It's faster, easier and less traumatic to approach her in her own language and communication style, show her your back which says I'm not a threat and I am not interested in approaching you. Then she will feel like you are not there to take anything from her and that she can approach you when she feels safe and that you are giving her what she needs such as food, water, and then love after her basic needs are met. Of course you can shower love on her but it's better to offer basic sustenance first to soothe the primal instincts and then she will let her guard down to then cuddle her.

My rescue chihuahua has to have a blanket to tunnel under. It makes her feel protected I think. She also hides her food in it like she has to make sure that she has food. Anyway you might try a blanket. After 2yrs she still hasn't changed much still skaky. She doesn't like change or if you move something like a table she doesn't want to go around it. She's extremely spoiled and is a 1 human dog. She doesn't bite or bark much but she is very picky about everything. She likes to wait to eat when I'm with her and prefers me to lift her water bowl to drink but she will drink if needed. Lays under the covers behind my legs.

Chihuahuas shake because they get cold easily and nervous. It's just what they do. You should put a towel over the corner wall and some towels in the corner so they can make a nest. These are Chihuahuas and they like to burrow and have a nest to cuddle up in. That's why she felt more comfortable in the crate. My Chihuahua sleeps under the blankets and will dig around on the couch blanket until it's perfect for her.

Names from Disney's Encanto would be cool. Tio for uncle/auntie, Bruno, Felix for the young boys and one of the girls names for mumma. Maybe Alma which is Abuela's name since she is the matriarch who holds the family together and has suffered much trauma but has brought the family to a new home, or I also like Pepa, since mumma is very emotional and I can almost see the rain clouds above her head. Soon she will be happy in a new home with sunshine raining down on her ❤

Chihuahuas shake because they have a fast metabolism. They may be cold due to this as well. She is scared because they are cowering and huddled up but the shaking is not fear. Google it for more info.
