Feeding Corn Silage from a Concrete Stave Silo

- As the title says, we're opening up the tower silo by the dairy barn. The silage in the upright silo was put up in the Fall of 2020. That is a definite advantage of an upright silo; the feed doesn't go bad in them and critters can't rip it open and cause it to go bad. Alan has to first remove the plastic cap and throw out any of the moldy silage. It's a big project, the warming weather definitely helps. Hopefully, the silo unloader will be getting put into place soon to help save on the labor involved. Alan reached some pretty good silage, so we share a bit of the process of making our own TMR. The Gehl Skid Steer, Farmall B, and our small bale grinder get to work.

good looking silage for almost 2 years old
Good old silos are best for longer term storage. My husband still works on silo motors, but not as often now. If you have clay soil, you can use it to seal around the doors. It's an old idea my grandpa used and the Amish around me still do. Stay safe and God bless.

I opened silos plenty of times! I threw silage out of 16x60 silos twice around, as deep as you could get the fork in, twice a day, then feed 120 head with a wheelbarrow, a load to 4 cows! I was about Justins age when I helped my Dad!
I can smell that silage all the way over here in Appleton Wi. Lol, and Justin reminds me of myself when I was that young and driving equipment. Lol
I for one like the upright silo. For me and my muddy lands scooping from a bag leaves quite a mess. We have had silage 5 years old in the silo and after the mold is gone maybe a foot or two the nutritional value was just as good as the stuff from the last year. The silo is right by the barn so you don't need to haul it so far. Every was has its perks I guess. Some people prefer the ag bags and that's ok. Justin looking like an up and comer in that skid steer.... He can teach me!!
Awesome hat, Nelson is a good man. Really like old stave silos, mine here was rotten bad, so I knocked it over and switched to bags. Bags are great for feeding deer, rats, and raccoons, but I wish I had an upright silo back to feed my cows. Maybe some day! Thanks for sharing take care.

Good ole silos. There disappearing on the sky line. I always like to be the one who got to open them. The smell is so good the memories of those days well be with me until my last days.
Tower silos, haven’t been up one in many years . Very few ever get filled around here any more, most have been knocked down. We switched to bunkers 25-30 years ago can’t remember exactly. Just something we do on our farm, you might consider trying. We have been using the two wheel “Rubbermaid “ hand carts instead of the traditional one wheel wheelbarrow. The “ Rubbermaid “ carts have taller wheels, which roll easier, and carts carry larger loads and don’t require balancing like a one wheel cart. Cows don’t knock them over as easy either. Carts come with solid tires now, “ pitch fork resistant “ lol.

Nothing wrong with using silos, sometimes I miss having mine around especially in the spring lol. You have a nice way of mixing a ration without messing with a TMR. I'm sure a lot of people would be surprised how similar it feeds out. Nice hat, nelson is a great guy with a great channel. Take care 👍
i did a lot of the things you are doing with the bale chopper to mix with silage.That was a good idea to put the elect motor on the jd silage wagon to use as mixer wagon.Good luck hope you all are getting a higher price for your milk.

Compared to using buckets, wheel barrows are much more efficient. I made silage carts back in the 1970's that would hold 6 to 8 wheelbarrows of silage. You need 10 or 12 inch wheels under them.
Later when I had an across the barn auger that could be used to fill feeder wagons or an outside bunk, I had two drops inside the barn. A standard wheel barrow would fill too fast requiring two people to feed, so I put 12 in or bigger extensions on the back and sides and then one person did all the feeding even after we included a mixer in the system.
The twelve inch extensions made the wheelbarrow hold twice as much.
For a smaller herd of animals, upright all the way................I sure wish I had one at the barn I got now for the numbers I feed. When its -10, I will take throwing a switch to a well kept silo unloader over starting up equipment to dig and feed the feed out of a bag or bunker.
One of my uncle had a skid steer without a cab on it, it dawned on me as I was watching this video, your Green Cap reminds me of the Stigeiger Tractors, I'm sure you have seen them around, there used to be a Steiger plant in Fargo years ago, I seen you put chains on the rear tires of the Gehl for better traction
Boy those Holsteins really get some grain they must be high producers . Awesome vid I always liked silo feed vs bag or bunk it's much cleaner than bag and unless u have one of them silage shavers I think you lose a bunch of feed

My step dad told me before unloaders they climbed silos twice a day to feed thank goodness for unloaders lol
My brother and I unloaded a 18 by 50, by hand though out the 70’s. My dad always said why buy an unloader when I have 2 teenage boys.

good cleaning of spoiled Silage in metal bunker # the silage is spoiled due to frequent exposure to air # the ideal temperature of Silage should be less than 37 C # Alen U can store silage in 55 gallons plastic bags & open those bags only which U want to feed cattle # in addition to golden greenish color of Silage Lactic acid : Acetic acid ratio should be 2 : 1 PH should be around 4 to 4.5 #👍
We use to shovel corn silage. We grew it but at first hired someone to cut and pack it. Then we got our own planter and chopper. We just didn’t have a loader so my brother and I use to load up a pickup truck to the top of the cab and then we would go feed the beef cows. They did good on it but when I took over the farm I got rid of the cows. We use to run not quite three hundred beef cows. Hated calving them out. Now I just farm and sell the hay. I lease m pay meadows out and I’m happy. I always said, the only way to milk a cow is to let the calf do it. My brother and I could load a pickup full in about ten minutes.

Had a bad experience as a kid when Daddy got caught up in the silo when the tube got clogged. I couldn't get him out so I had to find someone to help. I remember he was sick from the gases for about a week. All the best from WNC!

In our part of the country is mostly pit silos used. So the only exposure is the top and ends. However I’ve seen some monster rats who feed on the silage

Man this kinda crazy. I've never seen anyone feed out of silo before. I didn't even know that they were used for silage before today, I thought they held grain. I grew up around dairy farms here in Idaho and there's no way we could feed like that, not when theres hardly a dairy that has less than 2,000 cows.We just take the loader up to the silage pit and throw it into the feed wagon. Admittedly we have a lot more that gets spoiled on the top layer but it's way cheaper and faster to store and feed. Guess y'all do it different out east, nothing wrong with that.

Great video as always. Was the large square bale in the plastic quite dry? It seemed to go through the chopper well. Do you mix the grain you were feeding the cows or it comes from the feed mill?
Yeah that hay is pretty dry, it probably would have been ok without wrapping, but the guy I got it from, wanted to be on the safe side.that grain comes from the feed mill.

How did the cows react to the new silage? In reality for being in there for about 18 months I would say you had minimal spoilage. Your son looked very confident running the skid steer.
The first stuff that was a bit caramelized wasn't their favorite, but they're cleaning it up now.
I like silos for corn silage but we always put haylage in a trench silo much easier to get out

With commodities prices through the roof are you thinking about getting some more land to grow more grain of some type this year for sale?
The big thing wrong with that is as commodity prices go up land prices do also. Fed is also raising interest rates. Unless the price of milk increases a lot one could quickly find themselves struggling to make ends meet.
I would definitely like to get more land, but land prices are through the roof, right now. I think I will have some more rented hay ground this year though, so that will help.

Never had open one up luckily guys I milked for always started feeding out as soon as it was filled. But I have pitchforked a silo.
Have you considered using bale silage?
We make baleage with some of our hay, but I'm not really interested in it for the corn.

It's called APP-A-TITE, it's made by FormAFeed, out of Stewart MN, but we purchase it through Pierz co-op, in Pierz MN.
That mold is bad stuff.
Might be a healthy idea to forget about using the unloader and just go up and fork it by hand like the old timers did
I've forked that silo out by hand twice. I've forked the one in the pasture out too, heck so did Jen when she was very pregnant. Didn't bring on labor though.
