When I first saw this, I was probably 6 or 7. My mother had to tell me that Inspector Wang was also Inspector Clouseau. I was like "That is Peter Sellers"? Absolutely incredible and hilarious with lots of adult inside jokes I didn't get until years later. I am 38 now and I can't wait to watch this with my mother again in the next few days. A comedy that will never grow old.
I have watched this movie over 200 times. I’m still laughing since 1976. It was on HBO. I was 13. I’m stilll learning little bits of it. Absolutely Amazing 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
I saw this movie w/ my entire family at hometown's theatre in 1976 when I was 11. I've seen it multiple times since then, but nearly as many times as you. Re-visiting it again tonight, in tribute to Dame Maggie Smith's recent passing. 😢
I LOVE this movie. I loved it so much, I bought the DVD and have watched it I don't know how many times! And to be able to see all these wonderful actors -- many of whom we've lost -- is amazing. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Sam Diamond yells, "Nobody move! I have to go to the can and I don't want to miss anything!" Just like Sam, watching it over and over again, you see new things that you missed the first, second, third.... time. A true Classic!!!
I’ll always have good memories of this movie because I showed it to my grandparents when I was living with them 30 years ago. They knew all the actors from their generation and thought the film was so great, and they laughed their asses off. ❤
Saw this when I was 12 (1984 or so) and thought it was so funny and unique. Looking forward to watching it again and seeing what I missed. Had no idea it was from Neil Simon...awesome.
1987. My elderly parents and my elderly visiting uncle and aunt were sitting on the couch together. They were set to watch some boring CBS news documentary. I walked past them and inserted this VHS cassette into the player. Awhile later I had to use the bathroom and passed by them. My aunt's jaw was wide open in awe, lol. None of them were expecting what they saw.
I was introduced to this movie at age 4. My father was a Peter Sellers fan. We watched it again when it went to the dollar movies and any time it would come on TV. I eventually found it on VHS in high school and DVD as an adult. I watch it every Father’s Day (today) in honor of my father. It is classic ❤
My Favorite Line, too!! My poor family has to listen to me say it out loud, along with the movie dialogue, Every time we watch it…& that’s been a LOT of times!😂
A movie should entertain a person. No special formula. Maybe I'm showing a bad side of me by saying how much I liked this movie. (in response to the negative review from Yorick Jenkins) Obviously, one way to determine how much you like a movie is your willingness to watch it over and over. That is what I have done with this movie. Watched it over and over.
Bingo. Critics get too caught up dissecting movies like they did in film class and are eager to ignore the fact that it was just meant to entertain on it's own level.
I love this movie and I actually thought Truman Capote was great in the Lionel Twain role. I don't see why people hated his acting, to me it worked strongly. I remember reading Murder on the Orient Express, and getting to the end of the story where lo and behold, more information was added in the last few pages making the mystery impossible for the reader to solve, and that whole speech came flooding back into my head "You withheld clues and information, you tortured us with surprise endings that made no sense!" It just made me smile knowing that Twain had bested all those self important detectives in the end.
An all-time great movie. Everything about it is superb.. near impossible to fault. I wish that future release included the Sherlock Holmes out-takes, that would be interesting to see. Yet to show this to someone (of all age ranges) that didn't enjoy it.
Before DVD or even VHS, my little brother recorded the movie dialogue on a cassette tape and we played it in the car. Before long, he and I knew the whole movie.
I just watched this film again for probably the fifteenth time. Never tire of it. I was still laughing. You can watch for the comedy, but I truly enjoy the loving portrayal of the great detectives--Miss Marple, Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, Charlie Chan. Neil Simon is a treasure.
I don't generally have favorites. But this may be my favorite comedy ever. It's absolutely in my top 10, and probably top 5 movies. I've probably seem it 50 times and it never gets old.
I also remember this movie fondly. Saw it in the theater. The female characters totally steal every scene. My favorite line is by Maggie Smith when they question the butler (or was it the maid?). "ask him if he sleeps in, Dickie." Nivens reaction as he considers the pertenece of the question, but also wants to know the answer,... is priceless!! Simon mentions a sequel here. Is it the Cheap Detective?? What was the sequel. I believe this storyline was finished by the end of this movie.
20 year ago i went for Sat night out clubbing with my cuz and next day I'm on couch and Murder By Death was on as Afternoon Matinee on tv. One of best laughs i ever had❤
"My chauffeur was injured by a falling gargoyle while standing outside in Chinese footprints." "You should not speak with an accent when you know I'm so hungry." "A complete vegetable diet, twelve hours sleep a night, and lots and lots of makeup."
Wow so he wanted Orson Welles for the Sidney Wang part. I wonder if he got around to tell him Peter Sellars would play that part ? Sellars and Welles hated each other from their time working on 1987 spoof "Casino Royale".
I laugh every time Bensonmun rings the bell for the maid and the bell is freaking out on the wall behind the deaf maid and she does not even flinch. The bell kills me 🤣
The Cheap Detective (1978). More of a spin-off than a sequel. Peter Falk essentially plays the same character and there's several other actors that were in "Murder" playing different roles.
jerico641 Only 3 winners: Maggie Smith, Alec Guinness, and David Niven. While 6 others were nominees: James Coco, Elsa Lanchester, Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Peter Sellers, and James Cromwell.
Was one of my favourite movies when I was a kid, I know that Peter Sellers playing a Chinese man is problematic in todays culture but I still love the movie and everyone in it is a legend.
@RickHaydnHorst my guess would be because they have never read the books or seen the movies that this movie is a comedic homage to ... or know any of the original actors in these iconic roles, let alone the quality of actors cast by Simon ... and they will probably have to look up the definition of homage ..... :)
Much underrated comedy. Peter Falks performance is one of the funniest ever caught on film.
"Hold Me Sam" "I'm busy. Hold Yourself"
Such a fantastic cast!
"Where were ya, Wang? We was worried."
"Freeze, Blinkey!"
You're good. You're not my kinda cop, but you're smart and you smell good. You're not a pansy, I know that, but what the hell are you?
“ I was working a case” is my favourite
One of the funniest films I've ever watched, and watched again, and watch again...and again...and again...RIP
Amen!
I agree!!
Anyone can nominate it for inclusion
in The National Film Registry.

Same. My mother took my sisters and I to see it. Didn't get all the jokes. But my mother laughed through out.
Casting Capote was genius. I'm glad they stuck with the plan.

Sam fired his gun into the ceiling to get everybody's attention before he said that which is even funnier.🤣
"A blind butler..."
"Don't let him park the car, Dicky."
I’ll always have good memories of this movie because I showed it to my grandparents when I was living with them 30 years ago. They knew all the actors from their generation and thought the film was so great, and they laughed their asses off. ❤
I never really thought about trying to smuggle rich white Americans into Mexico. THat's an idea for sure/
One of my all-time favorite films. Great interview!
Rest in Peace Neil Simon.

Same with me 😆😆😆😆. Since 1976 on HBO I was 13. I’m still Laughing

The dislike is the Butler hitting the wrong button
A personal favorite for me and my brothers growing up. "He's blind alright. Those were my funniest faces!"
I love this movie. And one of the best dubbed movies in Italian ever.

Great movie great cast amazed how few people are aware of it.

i agree. absolutely love this film. Maggie Smith is hysterical. 'where's my Dickie?'

10x better than the much hyped CLUE!
They're both great & hilarious!
Perfect companion pieces.
I agree! It's a lot better than clue.
anyone know Chris Sias the editor?
This followed by Clue is the perfect double feature. Both star Eileen Brennan.
The sequel? What sequel?
The Cheap Detective (1978). More of a spin-off than a sequel. Peter Falk essentially plays the same character and there's several other actors that were in "Murder" playing different roles.
Perhaps it’s because I was about 11 when I saw it when it came out, but I still find parts of this to be scary. Favorite movie, though.
How many Oscar winners or nominees were in this film? I think most of the cast were one or the other.
jerico641 Only 3 winners: Maggie Smith, Alec Guinness, and David Niven. While 6 others were nominees: James Coco, Elsa Lanchester, Peter Falk, Eileen Brennan, Peter Sellers, and James Cromwell.
Is that some kind of record?
Incredible they were able to get all of these acting giants
Love it

Very funny movie. It would not be tolerated these days with political correctness. A shame.
Screw em! PC be damned! I watch this and Blazing Saddles and make no apologies!
With the exception of Wang. Yes it would. But Wang was the least funny character in the film anyway.
Zero mention of Peter Sellers: SOMETHING HAPPENED between Simon and Sellers
"Suspects! Theyre all suspects!"
THE funniest movie of all time. When I feel like shitpoo, I watch it.. I know, HOLY SHANGHAI!
peter sellers never should have sold his rts to this movie // he feared it would tank and he lost out huge on the profits.
The use of Truman Capote was insulting to his genius and expected because of the year, both at the same time, in my opinion.
So good. Stupid humor, but quick and clean unlike today’s movies....
This movie was dogshit

Truman Capote ruined this movie. Any actor would have been better.
