    I think the Picard ready room style is an excellent idea. The soft panels on the walls can act as noise dampening. The desk is wood with a glass top (but a large mouse mat cut to size might also work well). LED strips, you already have that covered.
    What about the fish bowl? Or the sofa?
    I'm not sure the projector is going to work (too much ambient light). A OLED screen would work well. How often are you going to look up?
    I hope you show frequent progress videos, including removal of the current items, empty room and so on, until a final reveal of the new room :)

    There are a couple of pictures that show slightly above the light strips that shows a few rows of a square tile pattern followed by beige walls, as you said there is obviously no actual ceiling in that set. Have you considered, rather than making a sky light, replicating the full height narrow window behind Picards desk? That would be an awesome feature to have.

    Hey, I watch your Videos mostly because you are pretty funny and to see what’s on the market. For me, the products themselves are mostly way to expensive for what they are doing. (The price might be realistic for some products, though)
    I very much like your announcement of making a video series about the transformation of your studio.
    I watch every single video of the German channel “Spiel und Zeug” which started pretty much like you with reviews about smart home gadgets and humorous content, but now also shows how he actually makes his (new) home smart and also has a video every now and then where he shows automations viewers built. So pretty much hands on stuff I could learn from.
    I would be very glad to see hands on stuff from you, too as an addition to your weekly review. 🙏
    Beside that: I rarely skip one of your videos. If I did skip one I mostly watch it a few weeks later to see your jokes I missed. 😄
    See you next week. 👋

    Will it not work with the battery’s removed and the usb plugged in providing power ? But I guess if you did then cut power with a smart plug you might have to press the button to turn it on, the power being restored wouldn’t be enough…. A Switchbot would of course solve all these problems.. good luck.

    "a little bit of a Trekkie": We all know that there is no such thing. It's almost a binary obsession (Either you can recite whole bits of dialog from even the worst episodes ("Brain? What is "brain.") or you couldn't find a Jeffries Tube with a Tricorder.
    Re: the ready-room: In my late teens I had almost entirely converted my room into a replica of ST-TOS crew quarters. (As you might surmise, it did not redound in a Riker-esque way.)
    I was also quite a bit into camping when I was younger, so I've had the [privilege?] of pooping to the light of the moon. It sounds more engaging than it really is.
    No Smart Home integration: Ah well. I really would have like to have that for the same reasons you gave.
    Thanks again for a great review. It's good to see niche products like this. Sure, I like to see what's new in the standard home automation categories, but I also like to see what's out on the edges, in case I've got a use-case for something like this.

      I kept thinking about that, but the film that these things project off usually have a very fine resolution that even a 4k projector can't match, not to mention that these projectors only uses a 5w or 10w (there's one at 20) LED bulb so they're way cheaper to operate than a real projector.

    I've been looking for/at things like this for years. I really want to do something along these lines on the ceiling of my man cave/home theater room. Which is also workshop, office, den and IT room. I don't care if the image is washed out or even non-visible during bright light conditions. I have some very bright lights in here (just a quick glance around the room I count 19 light fixtures of various sorts including 4 ceiling cans with 300 watt equivalent LEDs) so expecting anything like this to show up during "lights on" mode would be unreasonable.
    However, as a fellow Trekkie and all around science fiction fan a lot of the movies and TV I watch in that room are outer space themed. It would be great to have a "window" like Paul is contemplating but he didn't really give me a good idea of how this thing would look in my situation. Which is not his fault because how the hell is he supposed to know what my custom home theater room looks like when the room is in media viewing mode?
    That said, he did caution that the device is not terribly bright and did show it in a TV viewing scenario. Yes, Paul, I was paying attention. So I think I'm going to give this thing a pass because it looks like an unfavorable cost vs. failure risk to me. Sometimes you need to know when a thing will work for you, sometimes you need to know when it probably won't. Either way that is valuable information. Having followed Paul's content for years I can honestly say he's never steered me wrong. He gives me the information I need and has earned a high degree of confidence from me.
    Thanks for another fun Saturday morning Paul. Keep up the good work.

    Depending on how the battery is intergrated in this thing, I can see rewiring it to either take 5 minutes (simply pop the battery out and solder 2 wires from the type-c port to the battery terminals) or be a MASSIVE ball-ache involving removing industrial strength glue and trying to adjust the current/voltage in the space of a tiny battery compartment.
    The other option is some kind of 3d-printed mount that can hold a SwitchBot in such a way that it can press the button (you might have to glue something more precise to its finger though)

    • @paulhibbert

      I’m no good with this stuff, but could I wire a sonoff mini to its power button wiring somehow?

    • @JustTheJames
      @JustTheJames Год назад +1

      @@paulhibbert Unfortuanately not, Sonoff minis are designed for high voltage AC power and are designed to replicate a light switch rather than the kind of push-button switch you find in consumer electronics like that. My guess is that switch would be very difficult to try and modify in such a way. I still think your best bet is to look into removing the battery and trying to power it directly from the USB port, that way you could control it using a regular smart socket. Unfortunately, I can't find a teardown video or any kind of spec sheet for this thing so I can't say how difficult that will be without seeing it for myself.

    • @gordon861
      @gordon861 Год назад

      @@JustTheJamesI was thinking of using an ESP32 to replicate the push button switches. With ESPhome you should be able to use the 'GPIO Switch' setup to mimic the switches by wiring the pins to the correct terminals and then control from within HA. You've earned a load more respect points for being a Trekkie and the elephant in the room thanks you. However, having an elephant in the room like you and I do, they have a tenancy to get in the way of the projector!
    The major problem with this device is that most people are going to have it at the edge of a room because rooms generally don't have power sockets in the middle of the floor! You need something able to change the focus depending on the angle, like say a close wall laser projector does, or the majority of your image is going to be out of focus. Also, this kind of feels like the old "printer syndrome" where they can still the device at a loss and make a killing based on the projectable images.
    Also, 60m really? Children don't go to sleep in 15/30/60mins... 120/180 mins and you might be about right on the money!

    • @paulhibbert

    Good review, as always. Although I would never doubt the Enterprise's capabilities, I personally would have preferred a stars, planets etc. hurtling past window effect, but starship captains can't be choosers.

    For just a little more, the Dark Skys FX projector is much higher in quality, especially the discs that they produce. If you're into astronomy and wanted a night sky that is accurate, you only have the Sega HomeStar and the Dark Skys projectors to consider.

    this looks cool, but wow, what a price. For the price of this and a disc pack I could buy a really nice 1080p projector with keystone correction to shine on the ceiling with better contrast in low light... hmmm... it's a skip for me. aliexpress "TD98 Projector" is in the same price bracket... surely that would also be better for a fake skylight as well?
