I grew up in union sq from 1982-2020. We have MB, 2 Whole Foods one near central in cambridge, and one on beacon street. We have star market at twin city and beacon street. Lots of restaurants and great pizza. The best breakfast in all of the Boston area the neighborhood on bow street. We have Target and a gym at twin city plaza that’s great. You also have Marshall’s and such. So much to do in that area and it’s the best area of Somerville hands down! You have the green line 2 stops Union square and East Somerville, the red line Harvard and central, and the orange line Sullivan.

I worked at the WHOLE FOODS site on 47 Beacon St. In the late 1950's when it first opened as a STOP & SHOP. We also had lots of stores like WOOLWORTHS, GORINS, a supermarket, BACKER'S hardware store, a breakfast and lunch restaurant, a variety store with fruits and vegetables and a soda fountain and the best of all, the STRAND movie theatre. For a teenager, that was a great square.

When I was a kid we went to St. Thomas in Union Square (now condos). Then when I was in my 20s we went there for the Chinese Food once a month. Now I'm 7/10 of a mile from the square and love it. I think the new bike path is really exceptional when you need to get into Boston and don't want to take the T.

My rent near Union SQ in the late fifties was 35 dollars a month for 6 rooms on the 2nd floor of a 2 family house with a coal furnace in the cellar for your winter heat....

When I was a kid growing up in the 1940's, I lived 2 minutes away from the square and had to walk through it twice a day for 6 years To go to school ........Back then only low income people lived near the square to enjoy it's one theatre ( the STRAND ) and two 5 and 10 cent stores,a bank, a police station, a firehouse, a church, etc, .........We all got along great 'cause we were all the same, White and poor....
Times were tough but more enjoyable than today.....

Hey, Norm! Thank you for sharing your story. It’s always such a pleasure and honor for me to learn more about the neighborhood I love so dearly from those who knew it years ago. I moved to Somerville 5 years ago and have never been happier. My dog loves it too! Be well, Norm! ❤❤

@@apersonwiththoughts I'm so glad that you like Somerville like I did many years ago. It's been mostly a blue-collar city and never crime - ridden like a lot of other cities were. Everyone went to St. Joseph's church and all us kids hung around Lincoln Park to play ball and basketball and football. In the wintertime the city would flood the park for skating and sledding and hockey. Back then all you needed was some change in your pocket to buy everything you wanted as everything was a nickle or ten cents...Enjoy the city.

For the gym, the YMCA is up the hill. Decent spot if you want to work out and swim.
