Of all the performances I've seen, Koutev is the man who lifts the choir up to celestial spheres.
I've always been in love with this song since the very first moment I listened to it, and with this beautiful choir voices. I purchased Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares as a result. Fantastic voices and special way of singing. By the way, the OST of the picture Ghost in the Shell was based on this folk music group. Marvellous.

Although I do not actually speak any eastern European language, I learned this song an many others by rote from a sixties group, the Pennywhistlers. I recommend that group to you for more great Balkan music! I used to sing many of these songs to my kids.... it actually got them to sleep!

One of my favorite songs, though I neither understand the language nor have I ever been to Bulgaria. I found a translation and its a wonderful poetic story. Simply a perfect match. It was used for the film „ Banshees of Inishirin“ to counterpoint the hard life on the imaginary island.

Half of it is an original folk melody harmonized by Kutev (0:00-0:29), the other half (0:29-0:55) was written by Kutev himself (the text by his wife).
