      The things that stuck with me as a child-I was born July the 24th, 1992-one of them was the, unbeknownst to me at the time this specific word, the juxtaposition between...well, you know the one line I’m referring to...and the above quote from 8ball. That reaction had nothing to do with the unit's emotional bond, it was the result of training and experience. I offer this claim as a former soldier In the US Army with actual combat experience. Such tactics are so drilled into your brain that, in the chaos of battle, reaction becomes pure reflex completely independent from conscious thought and emotion. The platoon in this clip instantly provided suppressive fire to cover Animal Mother's charge because of that very well raining.

    It was always an interesting detail to make Animal Mother the one spouting racist epithets, being abusive to everyone, and then the moment any of his brothers are in danger he's the first one to leap into the jaws of death.

      People won't believe this but 30+ years ago people were much more open with racist words, but they didn't mean anything. Someone could simply call you something that today is considered racist but back then it was just a word. What mattered was how they treated you, not the words they used. People didn't care much about words back then, they cared about actual violence. Today the opposite is true.

    I think Kubrick has nicely shown an interpretation of the myth (I say "myth" because I've never seen or read any official proof) that an average squad in Vietnam wasted about 10.000 rounds just to kill one enemy soldier. In FMJ we see the squad firing like crazy as soon as they hear enemy fire, but in the end they only kill one girl sniper.

      That may be true but those 10,000 rounds weren’t all meant to be kills. Vietnam was the first war the us entered with fully automatic rifles for a vast majority of infantry. The biggest combat benefit of a belt fed or high capacity automatic rifle is for suppressive fire, mag dumping an m16 isn’t accurate for shit that’s the worst possible way to use ammo so they made use of it by firing thousands of rounds downrange while they made their advance. Makes the enemies hunker down and wait while we get a stronger tactical position

    @Graphic36 Marines aren't really racist to each other, it's just part of their culture...the cursing, derogatory remarks, etc. It's all just alpha male posturing but the espirit de corps is the real meat of it behind the gruff exterior.

      I think you missed the point of the movie. This is exactly what Pyle couldn't have been. He couldn't even handle the stress of hazing during basic. He broke so psychologically that he murdered his drill serg and killed himself. He would have been an absolute liability on the battlefield.

    • @tasjan9190
      @tasjan9190 3 года назад +2

      @@genevandenham7999 I understand the context of his character, I was referring to a what if scenario where the writers developed Pyle's character not to crack up but to actually graduate and become Animal Mother's character throughout the movie going from a fuck up boot to transforming into a true to right leatherneck willing to charge into a condensed urban Hell alone before he'd leave his fellow Marines to die on said battlefield. Just thought it would have been a better story arc for the movie is all...hence what Lawrence should have been. You just missed the point of my comment is all...friendo.

    • @smnbee75
      @smnbee75 3 года назад +1

      @@genevandenham7999 I see it going one of two ways if Pyle hadn't of committed suicide. 1. He joins a squad, and as you said, becomes a complete liability in combat and gets killed, either by his own squad or by the VC. Or, 2. He's recognised for his excellent marksmanship (in the movie, Hartland recognises this as 'I think we've found something you're good at') and is recruited by the CIA for black ops, trained further as a sniper, and goes and does some fucked up shit that gives him severe PTSD and he ends up killing himself after the war.
      Either way he'd never reach Animal Mother's level of soldiering.

    I wonder what animal mother would have done to uppham from saving private Ryan

    • @paladinsix9285
      @paladinsix9285 2 года назад +1

      Animal Mother would have mocked Upham mercilessly. But if Upham was in trouble in combat, Animal Mother would have risked his life to try to save Upham.
      Similar to the BAR man from Brooklyn, the only other survivor besides Ryan and Upham.
      Courageous Men also know Fear! Remember when Animal Mother peeked around the corner and almost got shot. He ducked back, breathing heavily. He had to psyche himself up to dash to the next building.
      Upham was a Linguist, dragged into a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Yes, all soldiers are Supposed to have at least minimal training to defend themselves and their comrades if battle comes to them.
      If you have never been shot at, or shaken by the blast of an artillery or mortar shell, rocket, or IED; it is difficult to describe how tough it is to get your body to obey your mind.
      Untrained people with no experience are unlikely to be able to perform.
      This is why we call the Few who do "Heroes"
      Upham performed Better than should have been expected. True, he failed to be a hero, and one of the squad died. Upham later rallied himself, and fought pretty well.
      Almost certainly he had nightmares the rest of his life about his moment of weakness.
      I can't emphasize enough how much the Army failed Upham by not having prepared him for the situation he was ordered into. It is the Responsibility of Leaders to prepare the soldiers in their command to do the duties they are assigned.

    Some ppl think that animal mother is a racist asshole, but in situations like that dark humor is really helpful for staying somewhat sane in an insane situation like the Vietnam War. Him calling 8ball jungle bunny earlier is just them messing with each other on the kind of level where it's okay for animal to say it bc he knows he's his brother in arms and would give his life to try and save any one of them, if you can't fuck with your friends like that then they really aren't your closest friends

    You'd make a good case, except the first casualty in A-stan was a USAF National Guard engineer, when his vehicle rolled.
    There are a number of resources that only exist in the Guard or Reserve, and they are deployed quickly.
    While the Combat Arms branches do most of the fighting, modern war doesn't have defined lines and engagements are flexible.
