Giraffe's "Hum" at Night to Communicate
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 27 окт 2015
- The results show that giraffes do produce vocalizations, which, based on their acoustic structure, might have the potential to function as communicative signals to convey information about the physical and motivational attributes of the caller.
The data further reveal that the assumption of infrasonic communication in giraffes needs to be considered with caution and requires further investigations in future studies.
Background
Recent research reveals that giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis sp.) exhibit a socially structured, fission-fusion system. In other species possessing this kind of society, information exchange is important and vocal communication is usually well developed. But is this true for giraffes?
Giraffes are known to produce sounds, but there is no evidence that they use vocalizations for communication. Reports on giraffe vocalizations are mainly anecdotal and the missing acoustic descriptions make it difficult to establish a call nomenclature.
Despite inconclusive evidence to date, it is widely assumed that giraffes produce infrasonic vocalizations similar to elephants. In order to initiate a more detailed investigation of the vocal communication in giraffes, we collected data of captive individuals during day and night. We particularly focussed on detecting tonal, infrasonic or sustained vocalizations.
Findings
We collected over 947 h of audio material in three European zoos and quantified the spectral and temporal components of acoustic signals to obtain an accurate set of acoustic parameters.
Besides the known burst, snorts and grunts, we detected harmonic, sustained and frequency-modulated “humming” vocalizations during night recordings.
None of the recorded vocalizations were within the infrasonic range.
Nocturnal “humming” vocalizations: adding a piece to the puzzle of giraffe vocal communication.

This makes so much sense bc when I was a teenager I asked a zookeeper about giraffes and what other animals they’re related to since they seem so unique and they said giraffes are most closely related to cows, so it makes sense to me that if they make a noise, it’s a bit of a moo. 🤯
Yeah I thought the same! I'm used to hearing cows and they can make quite similar noises
A couple of these comments seem a little confused, the description specifically says, "None of the recorded vocalizations were within the infrasonic range." What this means is that giraffe vocalizations are entirely within human hearing range. These aren't pitched up and pitching them up would not allow us to hear anything new.
Thanks for this!
surely there are infrasonic undertones to these hums that could potentially carry additional information
@@NocturnalNick what makes you think that?
I watched a video discussing the sounds that Brachiosaurus would’ve made. Their result sounds just like this.
Big sauropods would be so much bassier I imagine
well i mean, i havent seen a brachiosaurus and a giraffe in the same room, this is a little suspicious 🤨👀
@@-myharlequinnsapphicarch- OH GOD OH FUCK
Imagine how loud they were
@@SirKolass Or deep, due to those massive lungs and generally just a larger EVERYTHING. Maybe even too deep for humans to hear.
That is fucking terrifying.
And some people think Giraffes are cute. Well they're wrong! :P
Raymond I love giraffes so much but that is pretty damn creepy. Maybe if it was in the daylight it wouldn't be so creepy
Imagine hearing that in a abandoned spaceship with "no one" in the ship..
@@GrantDaily how on earth does that consider them cute or not? it's just a fucking noise they make.
Sounds like a really loud snorer to me lol
I don't know giraffe can sing the misty mountain song from the hobbit
Jay En Jee lmaooo
😂😂😂😂😂
NeoredXII bruh I actually teared up laughing 🤣🤣🤣
Good one 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I wonder how this video's traffic will do, now that it's linked to Hank "Giraffe Sex" Green? Also... what an amazing and unnerving sound.

Here from vlogbrothers to experience this noise I never even knew existed

Ditto! So cool.
And this is just the sound we can hear. They probably make deep frequency sounds that we can't hear, and that is why we think they are silent. In reality they are far from silent.
Nah... they're silent. They're not like dolphins who have big brains and the ability to communicate through obscure frequencies. Giraffes don't even have vocal cords.
The only sounds that they make is the ones you can make by blowing air through your lips
The lowest sound detected was 35.01 Hz, so no, they really are silent for most of the time.
@@victormunhozzz how about *no*
Giraffes DO have vocal cords but they have a 4 meter or 13 foot long trachea which makes it very difficult for air to go up through their lungs up their neck and have their vocal folds vibrate.

I'm gonna need better sources. Thanks for clarifying
Hank Green brought me here and I love giraffes even more now
Whoa that is so cool! They kind of sound a little whale like... Thank you Hank Green! And Thank you Giraffe scientists for finding out these things.
I thought the same. The deepness of the rumble that kind of echoes... Reminded me of whales too. I'd like to have more examples in different settings to hear if there actually was some echo and how younger ones sound.
➕🐋➕💚
What kinda whales are we talking about?
Sounds like some sort of avant-garde audio art exhibit.
Anyone else find it low key relaxing and beautiful
Yes. Always see the good I n everything
I find it both very disturbing but yet very interesting :,)
No, I thought they were passing gas, honestly.
Whalesong-like! And if your gas sounds like this, go see your doctor!
Somewhere between whale song and construction site. I like.
This is great! We need more Giraffe hum audio recordings with higher fidelity
🦒➕🔊🐋🎵➕💚
Kinda eerie sounding but interesting.
Sounds like someone having a hard time on the toilet
Kolas LMAO!
Me when I’m hungover AF
thats me when i struggle to take out that one big poo
I can’t unhear it now and that made it a little less terrifying, thank you

Truly beautiful and very interesting sounds. I can imagine a future where we listen to Giraffe "hums" in the same way as some people listen to Whale sounds. They feel equally calming.

Sounds like ghosts...or whales...or ghost-whales
@Adam Campbell you just haven't seen one yourself yet
😂😂😂
He's a phantom!
@Adam Campbell (Student) lmao it's a joke
Or whale-ghosts
I love how this video is exactly 7 years old right now... You know why
Everybody talking about how beautiful the sound is and I'm like "Oh god, I don't like horror movies..."
It's like whales and creaking metal like in a huge ship..
OMG! The giraffe sounds are amazing. Thanks for the link to them!
Thanks, Science Editor, for this amazing recording! Hank says "HI!"
I've never knew giraffes made sounds! cool to know about my favorite animal
This is surprisingly melodic! I would like to hear the full spectrum of their sounds shifted to a pitch where humans can perceive it all.
According to the description, "None of the recorded vocalizations were within the infrasonic range." So we actually can perceive at all! No technological assistance required.
I'm glad that we cant hear these... Hearing these at night would be creepy af
what do you mean?
@@sanv3275 it sounds like the boss music should start any second
It's not like you'd hear it anyway lol...
we cant hear this?
THE MARTIANS ARE COMING, THE MARTIANS ARE COMING!!!!
Eerie and beautiful... almost like whale song! Came here also from Hank Green's video, no regrets whatsoever! Hope this research continues!
The devil comes to collect his dues, Humming to himself as he walks the early plains. Tonight will be a good feast indeed
Anything can be eaten, even if you say no. he sings as he is getting closer to you
i always knew giraffes were aliens
they even have the Antenna 👽🛸🦒
Absolutely bewildered to find out my favourite animal makes this sound. Thanks Hank for bringing me here and the research team for recording those!
You know how in the owl house they mentioned that giraffes were mystical creatures that they banned for being creeps? Yeah
i never knew that a giraffe had trumbone vocal cords.
Hah!

Wow! That's creepy AF. Makes me think of a bow against the strings of a bass. Or could be an element to a Heilung song. Thanks, Hank for sharing this!
Came for giraffe noises, thoroughly pleased to find a Heilung mention in the comments.
To me, it sounds like my FIL humming some parts of the bass line to his favorite songs. Just occasionally growling a few notes, and we all can either guess what song it was, or pretend we heard nothing.
@@harpoonlobotomy It honestly sounds like a part of one of their songs. My husband agreed with me, too.
Funny they sounded like a brass instrument to me. In a big, empty room, far away from your POV.
That is simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. It's terriutiful!
Thanks Hank!
I want this on a loop to fall asleep to.
Just read "West with giraffes" by Lynda Rutledge and wanted to hear myself. Really magical indeed.
🙏 I would like to thank Hank Green for sending me here!

yup
Hi! Hank sent me!
thank you
I came from Hank on VlogBrothers
They sound like the creaks of an abandoned ghost ship
sounds like the noises high school kids make in the restrooms when bored
Not sure if it’s been done yet, but would love to see this experiment repeated across zoos around the world and see if there’s any difference in the communications of giraffes, and then get samples from the wild and make comparisons to that. Ooh that’d be cool.
The deep low octave vocalization speaks to the scale and size of their necks.
Someone PLEASE use this in a horror film.
That's a terrifying noise, I love it!
Sounds like background noise you'd hear in a dark dungeon in Bloodborne or Elden Ring
Amazing!
Giraffes are Ents. Noted.
I love girrafes cause they are really tall animals and there hums sound very relaxing it makes me want to go to 😴
Sonds like giant cows or sauropods!
Wow where did you hear sauropods?
+Symphony Arnold no! I think sauropods hums like that!
*****
I'll have to go walkabout
It does sound like sauropods but I sounds something out of a horror movie!
If you listen to the videos where scientists replicated the sound of the Parasaurolophus, it sounds similar.
Lol I desperately want to know how many views this had before Hank sent us all here to listen to this… it’s sooo cool
nah this is just sounds of a dad in the bedroom letting em rip in his sleep
The sounds
They must be singing there songs :3
Vlogbrothers sent me here.
Here from VlogBrothers. Thanks Hanks!
Also, is it just me or do they sound like Ents?
Sounds like a Brian Eno recording

this is extremely unsettling
Now imagine what noise would an Argentinosaurus make…
This makes me think of the Ents deliberation in the Fangorn Forest.
Love the spooky reverb

everyone talking about how beautiful the sound is to them but to me it just sounds like very painful farts
Salute Vlogbrothers.
