  • One of a series of educational films directed and shot by Victor Jurgens and released under the name "This World of Ours" , this film "Sheep Ranch Country" focuses on the people of Southeastern Australia. Copyright 1949.
    Opening titles: Educational Film Library - Sheep Ranch Country (:06-:50). Country of Australia. It's sparsely populated. Broad rolling plains. Sheep on the great plains. Clouds in the sky. Pastures for dairy cattle. Creamery, a mechanical churn (:51-2:41). Butter is packaged by workmen. Wheat farms. Horses drag a man on a makeshift tractor who tends to his field. A family sits and eats dinner. The children cut their food. Men ride horses. Children watch. Rabbit proof fences are checked. Sheep in the field. Dogs help round them up (2:42-5:07). Men sit around a campfire at night, another plays an accordion. Sheep are corralled. Men round up their sheep for shearing. A dog jumps and climbs over sheep. Shearing of sheep, electric clippers are used (5:08-7:28). Sheep get branded. A grade of wool is pressed into a bale and loaded onto a truck. Bales are stamped. Quality of each bale is also indicated. Truck drives off with numerous bales of wool. The bales are loaded into freight cars to be shipped to other parts of the country as well as other countries. A town where farmers do sheep trading and shopping (7:29-9:19). Sheep move around. Beef cattle are sold at auction. Men observe the cattle. An auction is held. Families watch fine steers. A cattle fair. Cattle is paraded (9:20-11:00). Fine beef cattle. Automobile and farm machinery is at the fair to be seen. Amusement park rides at a carnival. A carny yells and wants people to play his game. Children skip as they head to the schoolhouse. Children sit in class. A teacher teaches them. They listen to the radio in class. A map of Australia (11:01-13:10). Melbourne, Australia. Buildings in Melbourne. People walk around, head to work. City warehouse has wool. Men inspect the wool. Brokers example different grades of wool. Wool Exchange building. Men sit and bid at auctions in the Wool Exchange (13:11-14:59). Harbor of Melbourne. Cargo vessels. Cargo is hoisted. Sydney, Australia. Bridge. Docks of Sydney. Boats in the dock. Men pack up bales of wool. England does a lot of trading with Australia. Ships are ready for cargo. Wool bales are hoisted aboard (15:00-16:36). Grain elevators. Grain exporting. Iron ore is mined and then put into ships. Railcars move coal and ore. Coal is made into coke for blast furnaces. Steel mill (16:37-18:09). Suburban community. Children play on a playground, go down a slide. Rugby football is played by boys. Tennis courts. Women play tennis. Older men play bowls. Along the seacoast are long, sandy beaches. Aerial shot of Sydney. Flying boat, probably a Short Empire, flies over Australia. A map of Australia (18:10-20:38). No end credits.
