- From the very beginning on my quilting journey, I have thrifted (either at yard sales or thrift stores) for fabric and notions to use.
I still do!
Let me share what I got and talk about what to look for and what will work in your sewing room.

I love thrifting fabric. I have used blankets for interfacing. I bought a beautiful baby sling that I will make a purse out of. I bought a twin comforter that I fell in love with and using more sheets and turned it into a queen duvet cover. I have bought sheets, curtains, shirts and dresses as well. It’s fun to get creative juices flowing. I love to mix and match clothes like swap sleeves on jackets with flannel shirts and maybe put a hoody from a different shirt. I love to take apart things that look sad, like you were talking about the purse and reuse the hardware and materials. Great video!
What a fun collection of ideas - thanks for sharing. I do love all the things... lol as you can see, and yes - everything has potential. It's a lot of fun to see it come to life into something new.
Gracious. I had to look at your date. I thought you were following my comments from other blogs. Dear me. LOL I thrift all my quilting fabrics.. I also thrift about 98% of my dress making fabrics. I buy the suitcases to haul and store my thrifted items. I just bought mens 100% silk and %100 linen shirts. There is a challenge on YT to make sundresses out of mens button up shirts. Ok. I am ready. They are washed and trimmed. Still to iron the pieces. My mother tried to swipe the silk. LOL.
love this!! I have a few silk pieces that I am going to make a pillow case out of - because they are wonderful.
I was amazed you found shirts for $1!!! They are much higher here - $6 to start - and of course the more expensive brands can be $10! I try to look mostly in the very large shirts. There is a youtuber called Catbird Quilts who will show you how she cuts her shirts, etc. The yardage from a big shirt can be a yard or more! I found a beautiful circular table covering with truly elegant crocheted lace on it. I dyed it periwinkle with rit dye -1/2 Cup Indigo and 2 Tablespoons Fuchsia which needs to be in 6 gallons of water or more - and now I have to figure out how to detach the lace! It was crocheted on over the turned up hem. I would love suggestions by the way! The inner part of this table covering is too thin and holey but the lace is amazing!!!!! I tend to cut 10" squares from the backs because I love quilts made from shirts. If you look on line you will see some very different examples. I am in the St Louis Missouri area. I found a lot of short sleeve madras shirts a few years ago and am treasuring them.
I go on the days when they are $1. Other wise they are more on the other days.
oh- good to know on the dyeing info, thank you!
Find the one thread / stitch and snip it being careful not to snip the crochet thread. It will take some time, but will totally be worth it.
I love thrift stores & garage sales to hunt for shirts etc for fabrics.
Great finds!!
Aren't they the best?! I love finding something fun and unexpected. A lot of times we leave with things we weren't planning on! lol
@@Patchworkposse absolutely & yes about 100% of time 😆
I love hunting in thrift stores and yard sales for quilting materials, I was once given a whole bolt of fabric that could make many backings or whatever, found at a thrift store
I have picked up bolts of fabric at yard sales - they come in so handy!
Love looking in thrift stores and yard sales. I have been very lucky finding great things to use for quilting. Want to see what you make from the shirts
I love shopping them as well! I will most definitely share - the retreat is coming up!
Great thrift haul! I would never have thought to reuse a leather bag - great idea!
Maybe I'll have something made with it by the time I see you again... ;)
$1 per shirt at the thrift store? That is such a good deal...the shirts here in our thrift stores start at $8 each!
This was a day when the clothes are on sale, so yes - it was a great deal. They are typically $4. Some thrift stores aren't as cheap - $8 phew! I am really quite surprised at prices for second hand sometimes.
Yes. I pay $1.00 at Goodwill on their dollar day. Last week the color of the week was blue tags. Then yesterday (Mondays) all the blue tagged items were $1.00. It has to be something VERY special for me to pay more. I also thrift suitcases/luggage. I currently have 18 full of my fabric hauls. They frequently have yardage also.
