- Alma Cogan was the most popular singer and entertainer of her generation in the 1950's and early 60's. Her fans included the Queen Mother. Alma was popular in Europe and Australia too, and famous for her lavish showbiz parties at her London apartment. With many hit records and a BBC TV series behind her Alma Cogan, it seems had it all. She had kept a secret for a long time. Alma Cogan had cancer. Alma died at the early age of 34 a sad end for 'the girl with the laugh in her voice' See also Part Two available on this Channel. I was a member of Alma Cogan's fan club as a boy of 13 or so. I loved her ! Such a dedicated and cheerful performer, and those 'novelty' song just fine for her voice. For some time now I have had this wonderful idea ! Let us have a television programme of her songs being sung by Dame Shirley Bassey and Petula Clark, (who also deserves the same recognition as Shirley for her own work on the international stage). These ladies were Alma's contemporaries but with quite different singing styles. It would be most thrilling to hear Alma's songs again now being rendered by her contemporaries, maybe in their own style or with some slight vocal deference to Alma. I would call the TV special, 'Remembering Alma' and I am sure that it would be a great hit. TV Producers: Please take note !!
As a child in the 50's I had no time for Miss Cogan, then I saw this program when it was transmitted on the BBC & my opinion changed, I even bought the 'Greatest Hits' CD .. Thanks for posting this.

Yes, they certainly were big dresses! Alma was a lovely lady,a true 'professional' in every sense of the word. RIP my dear lady.

Indeed she was - I was only a little boy, but was completely 'in love' with her!. It is a shame she died so young. It is also sad that really few people nowadays remember her talent - she ( like others of her era) did not rely on 'Autotune' and other electronic wizardry to sing in tune!. Thanks for your comments.

Alma Cogan can still be heard on the radio. Her musical legacy lives on, some 50 years after her sad premature death..

I don't know if it mentions it but her sister was the actress Sandra Caron, she was in a couple of Carry On films & played 'Mumsy' in the Richard O'Brian episodes of The Crystal Maze
As a child I used to wonder why a woman would be called Al McCogan
John lennon was in love with this woman and its been rumoured that they had an affair together .
Absolutely zero doubt on that based on the footage of them and the way they look at each other. He was like the hugest thing in music at the time and could've got any woman he wanted, and there's no reason she'd have turned that down either, he was young and handsome.
I wonder how different it would've been had she lived. Possibly better, no telling tho
