The UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is among the people missing after ‘strange’ weather hit last night, says Matthew Schank, chairperson of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

it is plausible that Lynch realizing that Chamberlain was a hit used the cover of bad weather to scuttle the boat and disappear in a hurry. Allot of people managed to get into a life raft considering the reports that the boat was being tossed about on its side rapidly sinking. All VIPs onboard would likely have planned it. If they dont find VIP bodies then it is more suspicious. Possible the weather was worse than they planned for?

Having just gone through close to the area it was also hit with the Mistral winds which caused 5 meters swell.
We lost a fishing boat and crew to a waterspout in Alabama recently.
They're not going to get the attention that they deserve. "The Perfect Storm" was an excellent book (terrible movie) that brought attention to a crew that would otherwise have received no attention.
So sorry for your family. Tragedy on the water. Going to sea is always a risky thing to do. I was a recreational sailor from the Keys to Tampa and storms will come up out of nowhere. I had a few storms that were enough to scare me but fortunately I always made it to shore.
That big rig with half a ton of spreaders and christmas lights is top heavy and ridiculous.

was also surprised by the unusual lenght of the mast, seems double what it should be. definately looks top heavy, looks more like a cellphone tower!

high temp's and humidity would suggest port holes left open, top heavy rigging and freak storm would promote severe pitching and taking on water. also happening at night just completes a tragic scenario. all supposition but a dreadful event none the less.

@dogpaw775 first, it wasn't a freak storm, more of a brief squall that shouldn't have troubled a boat that size. My understanding is the boat also had air con, so if true there would be no need for any hatch or porthole to be open as it would negatively effect the air con's efficiency. What I'm waiting to hear is what length of anchor chain had been run overboard and whether the keel had been withdrawn, which would have had a far more dramatic effect than the rigging. And of course, we now know the mast is still intact and didn't snap. I think there's a lot of information still to come out and some of it is going to make rather disturbing reading IMHO.
i think that it has been reported now the design had dive platform that could have been left deployed and also a stern port side opening {for jet skis?}in the hull that could have been left open.all puts me in mind of the Zebrugge incident, poor management and seamanship. All will become clear. As i said 'all speculation' to this point.

Well the one thing I wanted to hear and I did was that it was dark so early morning.. now I don't know anything except what I see about other yachts so I assume one person would be on anchor watch and a water spout can pop up in an instant so that's how all these people on the yacht would miss the approaching weather
I have seen water spouts regularly off the coast of Malta ,so close to where this disaster occurred, so not far away.
No chance a 56 meter yacht was sunk by a "tornado" or a waterspout , half a mile from the port of Palermo.
Even if it was something like that, it would have given the people on board enough time to contact the authorities.

There is a phenomenon known as a White Squall where extreme winds that are localized can severely damage vessels. The Albatross was lost in a White Squall and Sir Ridley Scott made a movie about it.
White Squalls can appear without the clouds associated with other weather patterns. It is suggested that this vessel was sunk by a Water Spout or a Tornado. They can also appear suddenly, but they usually have distinct cumulonimbus clouds too. They are usually seen in tropical or subtropical areas and in the Great Lakes.

Global warming (climate change) was a factor 10 years ago. It’s been rapidly gaining on us for decades. But it probably has little to do with this specific incident.

The luxury superyacht looks beautiful, but not worth a damn in bad weather sinking at a protected anchorage. Like his company, the luxury superyacht was overvalued for handling in rough weather.
This is a complete failure by the captain to keep his passengers and crew safe. This particular vessel has a retractable keel which would have made it more stable and seize and how you guarantee you it was up making it unstable. The evidence shows that they had a 2-hour window when they knew the storm was coming and again to the old saying batten down the hatches they would have procedures in place to shut the or seal the boat up so it wouldn't flood if it fell over which probably and most likely didn't happen cuz it sunk in 1 minute. The procedures themselves at the most of the crew should have been ready with PDFs on and buy all video shown the crew didn't even have any flotation items on them as well. And last why did the captain get off the boat and survive and yet he left his passengers there to die. There should be a criminal investigation but this Captain is guilty guilty guilty😮
Were all water tight hatches and doors closed? Be interesting what they find out.

@lonewolfandcub668 it certainly makes you wonder, especially given that his co defendant in his recent trial was killed by a car whilst apparently out jogging on the same day. I don't believe in coincidences like that. Strange too that almost all the crew survived whilst the passengers didn't. I appreciate they may have been below decks in their cabins, but then so would some of the off duty crew. I wouldn't be surprised to learn next that the doors to the cabins where they were found are locked from the outside. As an ex Merchant Navy Officer, I also cannot believe that a sudden waterspout would take a vessel of this size, unless it's keel was withdrawn and hatches and port holes were left open due to the hot weather. That said, wouldn't such a luxury vessel have at least basic air con, meaning no need to keep windows, hatches open. I fear there's a lot more to this than at first meets the eye, however, if this were state sanctioned perhaps we may never hear the full truth.
I´ve seen 3 or 4 tornados a couple of days ago in the sea off mallorca. As every year...
At sea? Off the coast? At anchor in a port. Over 4,000 hours logged in by the divers, very expensive rates too. Also theyll be raising the vessel, and doing a enviroment assesment.....thankfully no fraud being committed.
