WOW! I can't wait to try this. I really appreciate that you broke this down in to multiple, simpler steps. Coincidentally, I had been experiencing some of the slide in a tight turn. It's something I noticed, but didn't realize it's the beginning of a hockey stop.
So helpful!!!! For so long I've wanted to learn these but our coaches NEVER have us practice them, after watching this afew times and practicing (and LOTS of slipping and falling XD), I finally got it!!! It's so useful for when you're jamming(If the opposing teams wall is in the back you can hockey stop right before you hit them and use the force to ram into them with your shoulder), and its a really great way to practice balance and self control. Thank you so much :)
+justine schmitt I'm pleased it helped. I'm sorry that your coaches don't want to teach them, that's a shame as the hockey stop and the sliding skills to go with them completely opens up new boundaries on your skating.
Amazing! Thank you for this! There used to be no info on hockey stoping on rollerskates on youtube, it was very hard to figure it out on our own. Thank you!
What's better a powerslide or a hockey stop. I kinda know how to do a hockey stop but I don't go straight I just turn really hard so I start sliding and stop.(Only my outside foot slides , maybe it's not because I don't have enough speed I don't know) Thanks nice video btw
Sorry for the very late reply. with a hockey stop both feet end up at 90 deg to the direction of travel. So both feet are used for stopping. with a power slide only one foot is used to stop. The power slide is the more stable of the two, but not quite so good at stopping. It also looks cool. The hockey stop will stop you faster, but requires more skill and balance.
Great video, many thanks. I have been doing the slow stop for a while; I'm going to practise the cornering and sliding next! Should be interesting! Are you on Roll-Line wheels, by the way? My faves for wood floor are the Olympic 93A :-)
Thanks for the compliments, Yes I have Roll line plates and wheels. I find Roll Line wheels excellent on wooden floors. Typically I use Grease 95a but I'm now on a more slippery floor than normal so I'm on Foresters 90a.
I hope this video helps. Having good hard wheels will help you to learn as they'll allow you to slide more easily. Once you get used to the slide the hockey stop should get easier.
I play roller hockey, this isn't a actual hockey stop as both feet turn parallel at the same time and your weight it supposed to be over the front wheels
This is great! How long was this lesson? Was this an entire practice or worked on a little bit over a few days of practices? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
It took about 6 sessions before they really got the hang of it. The most important part is the Parallel Turn which is demonstrated at the start. It turns out that all those that have problems doing the parallel turn, has problems with the hockey stop. Those that can do the parallel turn well learn faster. The parallel turn promotes the stable position necessary for the hockey stop.
I'm pleased I make you feel young :), When ever I put my skates on I feel like that mad teenager who put them on for the first time. Ok maybe that was a while ago Lol!
I used to skate a lot like craze when I was a teenager, but that was over 30 years ago! I seldom skate now, but when I do it I still enjoy it, just now I have to have some protections at 46 - things break easier and take longer to heal :) I got to go more skating, maybe with the kids. Thanks for lighting an old flame in me :)
Robert Herzberg I know what you mean, I'm now 53 and bones just don't bend so well as they used too. And I now have knackered knees to look after as well. I enjoy the skating I do, it's just not quite so much. Cheers :)
You are the best teacher i ever see!
Excellent job breaking down the hockey stop. Will be using this to teach my new guys. Thank you! :)
That is the most calming voice EVER xD
+Boomstickgirl DK (Lea Blak) Thank you :-)

Just sliding itself is not really part of the hockey stop. But in order to do a hockey stop you must be comfortable with slide. Have fun :-)

I play roller hockey (inline skate version) and find quad skates extremely difficult to hockey stop in.
