Dude, the amount of work you put into this tutorial is more than I would ever expect. Props to you for going out of your way to give your viewers a step by step walkthrough and figuring out a free method that you yourself didn’t need at all. I hope everyone that watches this recognizes the hours of work and troubleshooting you went through to make this possible.
I had spent days trying to get the OSM way to work. Grasshopper, tile mill, everything was failing because I was taking a huge chunk of Los Angeles. Your PDF way saved my life. Thank you so much!
I've been doing lake maps but using a laser to cut the roads instead of a CNC. But this open street maps trick has saved me a LOT of time. I was hand-jamming the paths in illustrator. Thank you for this!
Fantastic tutorial, Paul! I will definitely be using your illustrator version to make something similar as one of the first projects on my new X-Carve. This was perfect timing! You’re a natural teacher, too 👨🏫! Keep it up ✌🏻
Oh man, thank you thank you for this video. I've been working for about a 1/2 day trying to figure out how to remove the paths on a map outside of the clipping mask and I couldn't figure out how to do it. Flatten transparency! I would subscribe again ... if I wasn't already subscribed.
Thank for this video! Super helpful for some of my other projects. My wife and I are doing streetmap etched glasses for gifts and we were having trouble find the info so we could vectorize the maps in Illustrator. Your channel is awesome! Sidenote; DC was what we were looking for. You also helped streamline what our process would've been (as we learned about the Select > Same > Appearance).
Thank you for your videos ! For the people who posess an iPad Pro, there's an app called Atlas, it's made for minimalist map wallpapers and it can help a lot with the lineart base for this project !
You know you wanted the water treatment sediment tanks. That make the area so inviting in the DC summer. I will not forget running on Bolling when the wind shifted and blew that aroma our way. Great project my wife would love it.
You're not kidding! The smell on JBAB was the worst last year. This summer it's hotter but seams better for some reason, I don't get it because the poop is definitely still getting cooked haha
Sadly you get used to that smell. I live right down the street from our local treatment plant. When I first moved into my place I was ready to head back to my relatives farm and face plant into a fresh pile of recently collected manure.... it smelled better.
You should have a look at QGIS. It’s open source (free) professional Geographical Information Systems (mapping) software. There are a whole bunch of free plugins to expand its capabilities. One of them allows you to download individual layers of OSM as vector data. That plugin is called QuickOSM. You can pick different classes of roads etc and build a map of exactly what you want. I’ve not used it to export to SVG, but I’m sure it has that capability.
Great video. I have one problem you did not seem to run into. After I have the SVG file and put it in easel it is soooo laggy and yours did not appear to break a sweat. What am I doing wrong?
3:43 Why am i so juvenile... Excellent tutorial, I've been thinking of doing a little one for my city. It's also the first I've heard of openstreetmap.org. Thanks man. Oh and farts are only for hopping on tables and work benches and general structural integrity hop tests...
I have a slight problem with the downloaded file from openstreetmap. When I open it in illustrator it just shows up a picture, not as a vector/individual pieces. Any idea what could be causing that? I tried svg as well but it had the same effect. I also tried to make it work with the live trace tool, but the map was just too disformed after that.
Just a little constructive criticism: If you're teaching techniques it may help if you slow your talking speed and listen to your videos before posting. It sounds like you're reading really fast just to hurry and finish because the teacher asked you to read in front of the class. 🤓🤓 Now, we have to adjust the playback speed. I adjusted the playback speed (2X) just to hear you at lightening speed. 🤭🤭 🤓🤓
This bonus Jackman video was made possible by all of my patrons. I can't thank them enough for all of their support!

So awesome to hear! I was never able to get OSM to work for what I wanted either, glad I could save you some time.
Worth watching until the final second. Not enough of that on RUclips if you ask me.
We do a ton of this kind of stuff. Great tutorial!

That is so much information. I'm going to have to watch and rewatch this at least 100 times!!!!!! Thanks for explaining everything!!!!
Do it!! :) Glad I can help!
Thanks for taking the time to document this. Pace was excellent. Thanks also for including two methods for those of us without Adobe.
Thanks for doing this extra video! I have been thinking about this kind of project for a while. This really helped clear up the steps!

Awesome!! Be sure to tag me and Inventables on Instagram when you do it, we'll both love seeing that come together.

Perfect!! So glad it helped. Couldn't believe there weren't any of these tutorials out there anywhere yet
Good stuff Paul. Thanks for taking the time to explain alternative methods.
Thank you for your videos !

Really interesting! Thanks for all of the different options...I'll be referencing this in the future.
Awesome! That's what I like to hear
My brain hurts now but you are great and thank you for the videos and love your humor. I got to take a pill.
ha! thanks for the love. It took me 3 fulls days to figure this all out so I thought it was cool I could compress it into a
Thanks for the info Paul! 👍👊
Thanks for checking it out Fred!
Brillant class man!!! I just did something similar... but the old fashion way haha Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Cheers!
That looked great man! I should totally do a less detailed one by hand to go along with this.
nah... I think you went for the perfect spot. X-carve VS J-carve CNC! Genious!!! Abraço!
I mean... I would never not want you to do another one just by hand haha
Great tutorial thanks!
You are amazing, you know that? Of course you do because everyone is saying it.

Bro, i missed you so much!
Well I disappear for a bit, but show back up with 2 videos to make up for it :)
That's an awsome video even tho I was lost the whole time
Ironic that you got lost during a video about street map info! 😉😁👍
Just means you need to watch it again, and again
and again haha
This is so coooool!!
Thanks!!
I might hafta do this.
Thanks for the explanation! My ears are still ringing... :D
Just me and you need to watch it again haha
Great instructional video. Had no idea you can speak so fast. : )
Me neither haha

Awesome video! Do you know if this will work on Affinity Designer?
I've never used Affinity but it's vector based, so I'd guess that it should work the same
Very very good, new vídeo
Cheers Alex :)
very interesting
no freakin' way. you have the same wallpaper image as i have on my computer. i've had beaker as my wallpaper for years now.
haha that's amazing! I just put it on there for the video because I thought it was funny lol

haha I figured everyone would have clicked away by that point ;)
I'd love to see your take on something like this!
Ficou show.
