- Dance can elevate our human experience beyond words and, fifty years later, 'Cry' still uses that power to tell the story of a strong, fearless woman. You’re invited to make a gift today in honor of an important woman in your life. By contributing today, you are ensuring people around the world will continue to experience the magic and power of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater: AlvinAiley.org/Give
The ballet Cry was made on Judith Jamison in 1971 and was a birthday present from Alvin Ailey to his mother because he couldn't afford to get her a gift. He dedicated it to all Black women, especially our mothers.
It's about a proud woman who has been to hell and back, from her journey across the Atlantic. She's exhausted, she's a queen, and she is triumphant. She made it, and she is, in that last step that she does, beating away anything negative with her tremendous strength.
So very proud to have danced this solo while with Alvin Ailey! Thank you Alvin, thank you Ms Jamison!!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
And that is everything. To be a part of this history and finding your voice in this role and iconic piece of dance history. We can see and feel the ancestors hands on each of you when you dance it. That's the magic!!!
Yesssss! Love CRY, it's my favorite Ailey work. You just feel it!
I could listen these stories on endless play. I wish life would place me where I was created to be so that I could have a story to tell to provoke thought and inspire 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
My classmate performed this for her Senior Dance Project and it was beautiful! Other dancers around us didn’t even know what it was!
I have seen Judith perform this. She was exquisite. I recently looked up the lyrics to the songs used, and "Been on a Train," is about a man's fatal OD. Interesting.
"BREATH TAKING" !!!!🦊💋💋🐰🐵✊👑....the beauty of my dark skinned sistas releasing their Fire ( not today's bullshit concept of "Fire" ) back in the days were unmatched . What the F@#K has happened !😫😡👹
