  • Mykola Leontovych (1877-1921) was a prominent Ukrainian composer, choral conductor, teacher and public figure who went down in history as the author of the world-famous carol ‘Shchedryk’, which became known as ‘Carol of the Bells’. He was born in the village of Monastyrok in Podillia to a priest. He was educated at the Kamianets-Podilskyi Theological Seminary and later at the Kyiv Theological Academy, where he developed his musical abilities.
Leontovych was deeply interested in Ukrainian folk music, and his work is a synthesis of national motifs with elements of European classical music. One of his most prominent works is Dudaryk, a choral work based on a Ukrainian folk song about a shepherd who plays a pipe. Leontovych used a polyphonic technique to create a melodic yet emotional composition that captures the purity and national colour of the song. The work was widely recognised not only in Ukraine but also abroad, becoming one of the most famous examples of Ukrainian choral music.
Performed by Chamber Choir Avis Animi, conducted by Illia Humeniuk.
Recording from the concert on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine on 23 August 2024, in the House of Blackheads, Tallinn, Estonia.
