You will be Shocked by the absence of cars, scooters, motorcycles, buses, and bicycles. Nothing parked on the side of the road, no beeps, exhaust nor engine noises. You walk or you boat. period. It's wonderfully unique
Such a nice video, it's great how easily you transmit your good energy and joy. You can really tell when someone truly loves what he does, and with you that shows right away :) Greetings from a Veneto descendant from Argentina!!
+Nico O S thanks Nico! You have an amazing country there in Argentina. I studied there for a semester many years ago and then went back about 10 years ago to just travel around. So much awesome stuff in Argentina. We are looking to take the kids down next year hopefully.
Thank you so much for your kind words! :) You will always be most welcome here, and I hope you'll have an amazing time; here in Argentina and in any place in the world you and your family have the fortune to visit. Good people deserve good things, and it's always good when you see that rule confirmed. Thank you for taking us to so many places with your videos and for being always authentic. Wish you the best of lucks!!
When I first got into Venice, it took me 2 hours to find my hotel just round the corner from Piazza San Marco, as I decided to just walk around & not use a map. By the end of the trip I knew everywhere & could get from one side to another in 20 minutes! Loved Venice so much
If you go to Venice, 3 things: - Don't fall for tourist traps. Ask the menù, see the prices before. It's different from other Italian cities, there are clearly overpriced services well far away from the monuments too. - Try to favourite locals and their jobs. Foreigner capital has taken over most of the activities. Usually they will be kinder and cheaper. Use GMaps and Tripadvisor. - Venice is wonderful and unique, but it has this overcrowding problem in high season. In these periods, go elsewhere in Italy for more authenticity and a overall better trip.
$80 gondola for half hour is not too bad if that's the price for the whole family. It's still cheaper than the gondola ride in the Venetian hotel Las Vegas. 🚤
One of the most useful thing my friend, who speaks fluent Italian, taught me on my first trip to Italy was to buy coffee or juice at any cafe and then ask if I can use the toilet. I think it's just courtesy to order something because if you multiply how many tourists come and use their toilet for free , things like toilet paper, water usage will add up at their expense. Then there's always McDonalds. I always carry some tissues and wet wipes with me, just in case. Don't forget to greet the person behind the bar with a Buon giorno or Buona sera before ordering. Oh yeah, sometimes you have to pay first at the cashier, get a ticket then show it to the barista and sometimes you can directly order from the barista and pay later. Just follow the locals or ask. My memorable meal in Venice was Linguine/Spaghetti al nero di sepia or squid ink pasta. Bring your toothbrush though because it turned my teeth black 😀
My wife spent a lot of time looking at the GPS on the phone, in the end I came up with the idea of just going in the general direction and looking at the GPS once every so often. The place is a gift to the eyeballs , every building seems to tell a story.
I actually agree. Sorry, I know it's late. But out of all the iconic tourist destinations in Europe, Venice has to be my favourite. I used to worry a lot about the overtourism, but after 2020, I have heard that the city is "re-thinking" their tourist strategy. So hopefully in the future it will not be as bad as it once was. I also worry about the rising sea levels to some extent, but something tells me the EU will call in the Dutch to come help with that lol😂 I LOVE Venice. Such a rich, historic, beautiful and gorgeous city. Hope that the future will be kind on this old place. We can only pray.🙏🏼
It is a wonderful city! I fell in love with it when I visited Venice two months ago. I stayed in a nice hotel at Ila de San Servolo, an island ten minutes boat ride away, a silent and quiet place.
Some of your previous videos on Venice were an amazing help in prepping for our Venice trip back at the end of December 2016 and this is another great one. Getting lost in Venice was the #1 takeaway we had from your videos and our favorite thing, discovering random Piazzas was amazing. Came across one that had an ice skating rink blasting Metallica....
I went in December and the streets were really empty. The staff at every restaurant and shop i went to were amazing and i also ended up on a lot of private tours because of the lack of tourists. I fell in love with the city and now making plans to move to Venice from Australia in the next 5 years.
Spot on video! I'm from Modena, Northern Italy, wanna know what shocked me about Venice? They were talking about it on the news some years ago and they were saying that especially in Piazza San Marco, if you sat down to have a coffee for example, they would (illegally) charge you a different price depending on where you were from. For instance an Italian would pay €1, a Japanese tourist would be charged €5, an American €3...Outrageous!! They made a big deal on the news, for obvious reasons. I have fond memories of that city, it is truly one of a kind, but SO expensive!
True. I remember hearing complaints from American tourists in paying €20 for a couple of Cokes while sitting down in those famous bars in P. San Marco. I got away from this because my friend who traveled with has been to Italy many times, speaks fluent Italian and know about this.
so true. It has gotten expensive, but not overrated. I still remember the first time I saw a glimpse of Venice bathed in the setting sun. What golden colors! Still one of my favorite cities in Italy.
Hi Mark, been watching your videos for years. I just wanted to say that I very much appreciate your enthusiasm for travel and all the great insights that you share. Thank you so much!
Hey man. We love your videos, used them for Rome, Barcelona last year. We're going to Milan, Florence, Venice in Dec (13-21) and look forward to putting your advice to good use. Keep up the great work.
What a cool atitude and energy you have Mark, I love your youtube channel I learn a loooot of English with you and travel tips. Cheers from Argentina Mark
We are going the first 2 weeks of October, the first week in Verona and visiting other towns and cities, and then a week in Venice, l can't wait!! My 2nd time to Venice and I loved it!!
I was watching your videos 2 years ago for Netherlands, but then covid happened. Now I am going to Europe for my first time ever to Italy for my honeymoon. I had to come amd watch your videos on Italy this time lol
I went last year and loved it. They way we found great places to eat was asking shop owners/workers the place they liked best. Had great food, reasonably priced and many times entertaining.
We love Venice-been there twice and can't wait to go again. We like staying in Venice though because a lot of the tourists leave around 5:00 and then it is much less crowded. Same in the early morning, we could wander around and feel like we have the place to ourselves.
Been to Venice twice, I agree with everything...I learned the hard way about getting lost on my honeymoon. But like you said the more time you spend in Venice the easier it is to get around..... especially the second time around for me.
Jean Grandas Franco If you compare roughly $100 a ride which can accomodate up to 6 people (4 on average) is $25 per person that is less than what they charge here in Miami to go on a crowded boat to see the millionaire houses so I think gondolad are a bargain
2 yrs ago I paid the gondola 80euro(price for 3days car rental in my country Malaysia) ride in the morning..got the short line ride about 10 minutes..I feel it's just wasted..what best is many retailers there can speak more two languages bcoz their knew which tourists easy to buy their products..but looked at local venizian I understand why their boring with tourists..what to do because Venice is world famous tourists spot & will never stop tourists coming in everyday..
Keep the videos coming, love them! *Your guy's candour is what makes your channel gold!* Gets me excited for a more exciting future in the possibility of seeing such beautiful, wonderful places- and love knowing the pitfalls and shocks too, by far my favourite travelling channel.
Mark have you ever been in Turin? It’s a wonderful city in Italy not far from Milan. It was the first capital of Italy! It’s a beautiful city because it is a fusion of French and Italian architecture plus it’s not expensive because it’s not so popular yet and the typical food is great, plus it’s a part of the mystic triangle with Prague and London and it’s full of magical symbols! Plus it’s really practical to move bc it’s a Roman city so it has a chess table structure! ofc I’m a turinese but the city is wonderful and surely deserves a visit! Plus the museums are great
Your info re respectable attire at churches is valid for all the Italian churches everywhere, including Vatican: no shorts or mini skirts, no sleeveless shirts / dresses. Re Aperol spritz - it's actually an 'aperitivo', you drink it 1-2 hours before the meal and they normally give you some nibbles ('stuzzichini) with it.
It's true. Sometimes people hype up places so much and you're disappointed when you finally visit it but not Venice. seriously, this place is amazing. even when I went in July, and there was mass amounts of tourists and the heat was scorching hot, I still LOVED this place.
I live near Venice and I loved this video and the way Venezia is portrayed by tourists because this is just the way It is. The city is wonderful but pricy and packed with visitors, but still worth a visit 😄Congrats for the beautiful and useful videos!
I would never pay that for a coffee and croissant!!! Bring your own food! I would still go to Venice though and enjoy the place but very frugally!! Mike
I just wanted to say Thank you for ALL your videos about Italy! My sister and I went last May and I think I watched every last video you have done about Italy as we were driving from Rome up to Venice over to Turin and back. Amazing and very, very helpful videos! For this I didn't feel too frightened to be in Italy as just 2 women. Also, I did take your tip and get lost in Venice, not intentionally, but almost walked off into the water following the GPS instructions! Haha! And did make sure I tried an Apertivo. AMAZING FLAVOR! Loved it so much I now purchase the Aperol here in the states and make my own. Once again, thanks!!
I was in Venice last year with my friend, and yes we were lost, but ended up to eat in a local restaurant and it was really good and cheaper than tourist places. PS:First in the morning we went to Mestre instead of "Venice", and our English was trouble to ask somebody, but ended up to eat fantastic breakfast. That day was the best day in our Italy trip. HAHAHA
Most businesses speak or understand English... it's the common language used to communicate with the American, English, German, French and groups of tourists from the Far East coming off the cruise ships, by air and by EuroRail. Some of the visitors just take it for granted and not all even invest in an Italian phrase book. There's an American golden arches in the Mestre train station and then another 5 minutes from the Venezia main station. Hard Rock cafe is now directly off San Marco on the opposite end from the Cathedral. Almost all of the major international hotel chains have built there or bought and renovated existing properties. Love the city.
Holidays in Jesolo, and always head into Venice, and agree, just let your self's get lost, and over the years, have got some amazing photos. One thing about getting lost, never seem to find the same place twice, so maybe that's what's Venice is about, and can be on my feet for around 7 hours,
I found a group ticket on TripAdvisor for a 30 min gondola ride for just over 30 euro. I was a solo traveler and shared the boat with 5 others. We had fun and both our gondolier and the other one near us in our group both sang and one had a pretty decent voice. I bought a ticket specifically for sunset time and it was beautiful! And it let me click off a box on a budget...until I return with someone 'special' to splurge for the private boat!
Plan a lot of time there. I was there on a college tour in 1988 and we tried to do everything and go everywhere which left us one day in Venice. We had four hours to get from the big parking lot to the northwest to San Marco, and back. Boats probably would had been faster but as poor college students we hooked it trying to not get lost. I found the number of tourists too overwhelming even in April and if I do go back November looks like a good time to go.
A tip on the gondola ride. I waited to it was drizzling rain and noticed all the drivers were sitting with no business. I negotiated my ride for 20 euro.
I went there in August last year and was amazing! Overcrowded though but enjoyable in anyways... I heard later that those small boats can be rented... Great video!
we spent 80 euro for half n hour which burnt my pocket but tbh the experience is out of this world... Loved it!... Venice is indeed a magical experience !
I love Italy and returning again April 2023 and taking in Venice before going to Rome.. Unfortunately I can’t get excited about Venice, dunno why, it’s just never tickled my imagination. Thanks for the video all the same, hoping I love it when I get there
Venice was incredible. That being said, the main thing that shocked me was when I had to piss in one of the canals in a dark corner on a Sunday because all the public toll bathrooms had closed and it was an emergency. Yes, I know You can use the restaurants bathrooms if you go in and purchase food or a coffee but I was maxed out and drank to much “Peroni!”
We were there a few months ago. Definitely wasn’t my favourite Italian city. Food was good, but So many other cities were better since everything has to be brought in. Loved the Murano glass and a trip over to Burrano!!
Good tips for Venice. We've been in Summer and we won't go back. It is great in Fall and Winter.Beautiful city that must be walked to enjoy. You will need 3 days to get a full understanding of this wonderful city. BTW don't ever eat where the rest of the tourist eat.Explore and get off the beaten path.
Hello Mark, one place i do not think you may been been to is Lyon, Rhone-Alpes in France. I am currently studying here and i absolutely love this city. Les lyonnais seem to be more relaxed then Parisians and the city itself has a very laid back outdoor culture.
The first thing that shocked me was how rooms in Venice are decorated. Expect paper covered walls with a lot of designs. Rooms tend to look old fashioned, even in expensive hotels. At least that has been my experience staying in three and four stars hotels near San Marco. Venice is my favorite place .
I was also shocked by just how hot it was last summer. Also if you want to view the glass blowing in murano they charge you €7.... and those crowds put me off big time. Worth seeing Doges palace. Bernie in sydney
You will be Shocked by the absence of cars, scooters, motorcycles, buses, and bicycles. Nothing parked on the side of the road, no beeps, exhaust nor engine noises. You walk or you boat. period. It's wonderfully unique
Wrong. There are engine noises and exhaust from the boats.. And yes the beeps are there.. Even in this video.. If you watched it.

+Eugenio A. Well said
How bad are the crowds in September?
$80 gondola for half hour is not too bad if that's the price for the whole family. It's still cheaper than the gondola ride in the Venetian hotel Las Vegas. 🚤
thiery572 100$! It’s 80€
why on earth will they charge more innLV
The local government prescribed the maximum charge of €65, so anything more than that is a scam.

Recommend going to Torcello to get away from the crowd.
I was here july 2017! It was freaking amazing! By far one of my favorite italian cities
+MichaelaRose I feel the same way :)
You're really not kidding about how beautiful it is. I visited yesterday on a day trip from Milan. It is astounding.
My wife spent a lot of time looking at the GPS on the phone, in the end I came up with the idea of just going in the general direction and looking at the GPS once every so often. The place is a gift to the eyeballs , every building seems to tell a story.
Venice is definitely not overrated, maybe the rest of the world...;)
Great video.
+Carlo Defilippi exactly! I never get it, it's gorgeous, it's one of a kind, it has atmosphere... definitely not overrated :)

I’m still shocked that I’m coming to Italy this fall. I can’t get enough of all your videos!! A big gratzie from me!
In 2018 30 milliom tourists visited Venezia. Another tip - the free walking tours are great. The one I went on was led by a native Venetian.

We had four hours to get from the big parking lot to the northwest to San Marco, and back. Boats probably would had been faster but as poor college students we hooked it trying to not get lost. I found the number of tourists too overwhelming even in April and if I do go back November looks like a good time to go.
I love Venice! 😍 It's amazing! I will definitely come back
A tip on the gondola ride. I waited to it was drizzling rain and noticed all the drivers were sitting with no business. I negotiated my ride for 20 euro.
I went there in August last year and was amazing! Overcrowded though but enjoyable in anyways... I heard later that those small boats can be rented... Great video!
August?!!!.....eeeeek!
we spent 80 euro for half n hour which burnt my pocket but tbh the experience is out of this world... Loved it!... Venice is indeed a magical experience !
+Ritankar Sasmal that's great to hear. All the best on your travels
I love Italy and returning again April 2023 and taking in Venice before going to Rome.. Unfortunately I can’t get excited about Venice, dunno why, it’s just never tickled my imagination. Thanks for the video all the same, hoping I love it when I get there
My paternal side of the family immigrated from Switzerland, before Switzerland, it was venice Italy.
300K I never thought I'd see it hahaha. Congrats you guys, you are a machine!
+Bucky Barnes optical illusion :)
Great video! When is high season??
I live close to Venice and the best moment if you don't want to be overwhelmed by tourists is Jenuary
Believe it or not , the last time I was there was 52 years ago . And other then there being more tourists it has not changed at all !
Thanks.
Burano too! I've heard it's nice.
heh, I completely forgot about how my mom and I got lost there until you mentioned it :P
+J M :) awesome. Glad I could help jog your memories :)
Great video mark!!
Have you any idea of luxury hotels in venice??
Thank you very much
Greetings from Yemen

+Aleksandar CUCUKOVIC thanks :)

I'd love to visit Venice but I'd be terrified the whole time because I'm SO scared of water
when did you shower yourself last time?

We were there a few months ago. Definitely wasn’t my favourite Italian city. Food was good, but So many other cities were better since everything has to be brought in. Loved the Murano glass and a trip over to Burrano!!
If there two signs to Rialto, take one of them, doesnt matter.
Sent from holiday in Venice😊
Venice, Brugge, Gent, Utrecht, Strasbourg, Colmar, Lucerne, Heidelberg, Salzburg, Prague = my favorite towns in Europe :-)
+John P. That's a good list too
Give me architecture + canals/rivers/bridges and i don't want anything more! It will be nice if you do a top 10 canal cities/towns in Europe :-)
A'dam without the tourists.
You have the best travel videos in RUclips, what’s the best time to visit Venice when is less crowded
+Eli R November to February. Then April and September for better weather
Ours had fabric on the walls.
That's because in Venice is not easy at all to dismiss old things
I was also shocked by just how hot it was last summer. Also if you want to view the glass blowing in murano they charge you €7.... and those crowds put me off big time. Worth seeing Doges palace.
Bernie in sydney
A lot has changed since I've been there years ago. I didn't have to pay like you did for viewing glass blowing in Murano.
I love sardines so I am looking forward to theirs
I would make sure to eat fegato alla veneziana and some form of nero di seppia. And of course good wine to go with haha.
