I wish we could crowdfund a full dub of the Japanese exclusive G1 series with the remaining G1 US cast. I would kill to have all of Headmasters and Victory have the US voice actors.

The coolest part about God Bomber is that in North American canon, he was retroactively confirmed as the upgraded version of Roller.

We weren’t rich either, but opening a present with that toy inside on Christmas Day in 1988 is one of my favourite memories. I played with that Optimus Prime figure for years.

I had collected many Transformers:, metroplex, all the predicons, all the arialbots, dirge, ramjet, blaster, soundwave, jetfire, that sharkticon, venom, barrage, topspin, all the combaticons, twintwist, most of the constructicons, grimlock, sludge, kickback, bombshell, all the stunticons, megatron, wheelie, braun, perceptor, all the Seacons, seaspray, gears, ravage ,ratbat, frenzy, rumble, blaster....and more. When i was around age 18 or 19, i met a young kid who absolutely loved Transformers. He was less fortunate and had a handful of Transformers that were his life. Long story short, i gave that kid all of my Transformers in a big box. I hope that made that kid happy for many years.

When people ask me my most fond memories of Christmas, it's always the year I got this epic beast. Seeing the original box... Felt like I could see the wrapping paper coming off. I stared at the box for what felt like hours before even opening it.

  • @Simonio8
    @Simonio8 5 лет назад +87

How in God's green Earth did you as a kid have the mind to keep the original box?!
I wanted Powermaster Prime so bad but we were dirt poor, I never owned a big Transformer as a kid. I just admired from the shop window.

I know that feeling, my family was poor as well. I did get some smaller transformers, but never a big one... until one very special Christmas. That Christmas I only got one gift , but it was a Power Master Optimus Prime, so I did not complain. That was the only big transformer I ever got, and I still have the toy to this day. Sadly lost the box though.

I had an import version of Starscream as a kid. And everyone in the neighborhood wanted to play with him because his Missile Launchers weren't child safe to say the least. You could launch missiles all the way across the room! It was awesome. When playing with JOES I would use the detachable Starscream launcher as an anti-aircraft missile on the JOES base. 🙏

    • @MichaelMercy

Awesome! I remember the first time I tried out a Takara reissue Convoy (Optimus). Scared the hell out of me when I launched Roller! I was so used to my version where would have barely enough spring to make it to the ramp and roll down. The Takara version launched him clear over the ramp into the air and across the room! :D

      Isn't that the norm?
I have compared other Japanese products with American ones and some of the American ones are honestly awful (the example that comes to mind is the Japanese Paildramon and the American one. The Japanese one was a highly detailed combiner type figure while the American one was a mediocre triple changer), kinda feel bad for the kids that only got to know that version.

I never knew about this version. By the time these came out, even my brother was no longer buying Transformers. What a different concept but makes sense that it came from a comic where all things are possible, even more so than in books and movies! I think you're right about that Powermaster idea and it was a risk but it seems liked a good one.

Awesome vid. I share your feelings exactly. I was fortunate enough to have both Opti's at the same time for about 5 months or so...til that fateful day in 5th grade where my teacher decided to take her final revenge on me in the form of an N (not satisfactory) on my report card. Later that evening, my Power master Opti would do battle with my mom's Power hammer....and lose. It was...a dark day.

Thanks to the old Marvel comic Powermaster Op is my all time favorite version of the character. I still have my original 1989 toy as well (though sadly the box is long since lost to the ages). He's had some wear and tear on his cab's front paint job, so I've given him a few custom paint applications here and there. I've also got a Japanese issue God Bomber edition. Yours is in pristine condition, you've obviously taken exquisite care of it.
I actually liked his red eyes because it matched the Marvel comic, which was my favorite TF continuity until the recently-ended IDW comics finally supplanted it. My Powermaster's eyes are custom painted with a sparkly red to really make them pop. Your custom blue eyes do look quite nice, though, I must admit. That metallic sheen!
Nice video review, I liked the little clips from the Masterforce cartoon in the corners. Good stuff.

  • @gozinta82
    @gozinta82 5 лет назад +1

I remember this toy from my childhood! I feel the same way about it as you do regarding the limitations of movement and the part about his back being the front and such. My friend had this right when it came out (or maybe for Christmas) but I had the reissue with the diecast windshield (same as original), but a different color trailer (purple and black or gray I think). The Powermaster base was an awesome addition when playing with a bunch of other transformers, especially ones that could utilize the base.
During the summer my friend and I would get out transformers together and have huge battles. You'd have basically most of the large ones: Scorpinok, Powermaster Base, Ultramagnus and a few others for the base sections on opposite sides of the living room, then plenty of middle-sized and smaller sized ones to go to battle with. Then one of us would randomly transform one of the bases and have a field day. Turned out for some epic childhood battles. Good times.

Very cool video. Love your production and use of all the classic Peter voice bits. I never had the original Prime but I did get the G2 Prime with the sound box when I was a kid. I was visiting my dad but had forgotten to bring any toys and it was raining that weekend. So he had planned on giving me Prime for my birthday but saw he was needed early. Then I did get the power master legend reissue a few years ago because the Headmasters and Targetmasters were some of my favorites from G1. I still have my original Apeface.

Despite not being a kid anymore, I finally had that moment today similar to when you saw Prime on the shelf. Decided on a whim to visit the Toys R Us near my college campus (Toys R Us is still alive and well in Canada) to browse what Transformers they had compared to the store closer to my house. Seeing that the Transformer aisle was fairly less stocked than the home store, I was about to make my way back to campus when I remembered that every Toys R Us has a collectables section in the electronics corner, so I made my way over to see if they had any Masterpiece figures. And then I saw it: sitting on the shelf with only two in stock and marked down for clearance was Movie Masterpiece Barricade, priced at a total of $76 CAD after adding tax. The 2007 deluxe Barricade toy, along with his counterpart, 2007 deluxe Bumblebee, was my first ever Transformers figure, though I somehow lost him years ago, and seeing his Masterpiece incarnation at such a low price, I *had* to get him. There was no hesitation about it. Next thing I know I'm walking back to campus holding the bot who was my first Transformer, and now, my first Masterpiece. To imagine that if I hadn't gone on this on-the-spot trip, I'd never have gotten him, it almost feels like it was meant to be.

In similar fashion, I didn't have many larger toys myself (we suffered from fundsarlow). But, in 6th grade, we had a big class trip to Albany (being a kid from Queens, an overnight stay away from home was a big deal). My mom gave me some pocket money to use however I wanted (for snacks, souvenirs, etc). After our class did some of our obligated tours around town, we had some time to kill before going back to our rooms. Lucky for me, we went to the mall- and there he was, in the front window of a KayBee toys. It was glorious and, since I hadn't used any of my money (outside of some souvenirs for my parents and sister)-I had just enough to buy my very own Optimus. Your vid brought me back 30 years-thank you for the memories and your story.

While stationed in the UK in the laste 80's, I found the Powermaster Optimus Prime there, and got it for my younger cousin. Just before packing it for shipping, I saw a possible crack on the cab. So I carefully unpacked it, and found out the thing hat several cracks across the whole body. This meant I had to travel all the way back to the town of Huntington, and get a replacement. The saleswoman let me open a replacement there and check it. Thankfully that one was OK. My cousin loved that version of Prime, and I believe he still has it somewhere.

Great review! You just changed my mind about this version of Optimus. Was about to put him up for sale but now I've decided to keep him. And now I also just absolutely have to get the Japanese diecast version as well. You make badass videos. Love all the graphics and highlights. Keep up the awesome work!!

The commemorative Hasbro "Apex Armor" reissue is almost same as the Japanese version. It also has diecast.

I was a young teen when Transformers came out, and they blew my mind. Before that I was into He-Man, Thundercats, G.I. Joe, Robotech, and Voltron among others. But Transformers were the first toys I remember saving up for and actively collecting.
When the movie hit, I gathered friends, cousins, even friends of friends to all go to the premiere. It was epic. Prime dying was heartbreaking, but it fit the story, I accepted it though I didn’t want to.
When he came back, I was cheering. He was back were he belonged, and his styling seemed like that comfortable easy chair you always end up going to after looking at all the fancy modern furniture. I had no problem there.
But the toy... yeah. He was always pretty wonky, compared to the jets, or Soundwave or most of the other Autobots. Remember how great Perceptor was? He was so NICE in robot form. Hot Rod too. Anyway...
1988 rolled along, my best friend had his driver’s license and we had a thing about going “over the hill” to a movie on Friday night, arcade, Taco Bell, and of course Toys R Us. Yep, us kids from the 70s are the original “I don’t wanna grow up”, we paved the way for you ‘80s kids.
I remember we walked to the back of the store where the action figure aisle was and I let out at loud, abrupt “AAH!” When my eyes locked onto the new OPTIMUS PRIME figure. My friend was immediately “GEEZ” as in “dude are you ok it’s just a toy” and I admit that’s why I cut my scream short, realizing I was almost an adult screaming about a new toy.
But the reaction was honest. There he was. Optimus Prime was back and better than ever. That pose on the front of the box, like he was reaching out to me, to all the fans, it was real. I don’t regret getting hat excited even to this day.
I remember Transforming him in my friends car on the way home, I never read the instructions, it was always a personal challenge to “get it right the first time” with transformers. In just regular robot mode I had him Transformed, the traditional way. The front of the cab was the front of Prime. Looked a little odd but ok. Then I stuck the giant head on him. Yikes. This guy looks weirder than the original. But then I realized he didn’t look like the pic on the box. Ituened him around to see an amazingly more cartoon accurate body on the back of him! And then I saw the tiny hole to pull up his head. WOW. This was a GREAT looking Optimus Prime toy.
I didn’t like the dark blue windows they gave him though, so I cut some squares from another sticker sheet of silver and stuck those over the blue, and blue metallic sticker paper over his eyes, to make him look more like real Prime.
I was not the biggest fan of the PM mode, with his stumpy arms and beer belly, so he stays good old regular Optimus Prime on my shelf. He’s stood on my main toy shelf ever since.
(As an aside, when Fans Hobby announced their version “Power Baser”, I got him right away, now THERE was the Power Master Optimus Prime promised on the original,1988 toy box.)
Wow that was a story, I should‘ve just made a video...

I got the 1988 Powermaster Prime for my friend for his birthday - he hugged me. I have the Commemorative version mint in sealed box. Not sure what I’ll do with it yet. Great job on the eyes and that is one nice collection.

I never owned the Power Master Prime, but I did have the 1984 Prime !! I bought the God Ginrai figure when it got re-released in Japan !! My 1984 Prime ended up getting messed up thanks to an old friend, but I bought a G2 prime new in the box a few years ago off ebay !! I had a small collection back in 1984-85. then started recollecting in the early 2000's(recent years I slowed down collecting due to the price hikes). I still own a lot of my original figures. Even bought the cartoon and movie on dvd when it came out too. I also bought the Master Piece Convoy(when it first came out) and also got a reissue of Star Convoy !!! Good times and fond memories as a kid !!

This is such a great showcase for the character. I had a lot of the same feelings about Powermaster Optimus Prime! It was so good to see him back, and better than ever. I've recently completed my own custom Powermaster Optimus Prime using Takara-Tomy LG-35 Super Ginrai, Perfect Effect Upgrade Kits PC-15 and 16, a pair of G1 Powermaster Prime rifles and a few Reprolabels. It's nice to have him up on the shelf again after so many years, and looking fantastic in a modern update. Thanks again for this video, Michael. It brought back a ton of good memories!

What's so cool about these videos is you kinda forget how these toys look as you get older. Almost have to double take some of the ones I've seen on here and think "is that what they really look like?" lol. Greetings from the UK!

Great review. I too owned the Canadian version of PM OP. It was the first Prime I bought in a store at the time. I had similar thoughts on it's short comings as well. One other thing I tried was putting the G1 Prime into the PM trailer. I had to remove the exhaust pipes to allow the legs to fold all the way back so it could slide in.
Alas, when I found out about the Takara version and subsequent reissue in the early 2000's, I sold my PM Prime to finance the purchase of what I felt was an much more desirable upgrade.
I regret it now, and this video was great for the nostalgia.

This is the first review I've seen that has fully explained 'god bomber'. Now that I've seen how he can combine to form a giant bot I think I need to get one!
I agree about the orange version. Somehow that just strikes me as Rodimus trying to *be* Optimus Prime.

I so loved this toy as a kid, even more than the Diaclone-ish 1984 version. Though in the 1990s when I found out about the Japanese Ginrai I had to get one, the improvements were much appreciated. I also enjoy the new Takara Legends version of Ginrai, much better than the new Hasbro version of Powermaster Prime, even though he isn't a powermaster. The Peter Cullen Prime dialogue with Masterforce clips you did were very cool. I just found out about your page from a post you made on TFW2005 and I must say you are a man after my own heart. Keep up the great work!!

I was born in 1982 and got Powermaster Optimus Prime for my 4th birthday and I loved it. I was already a big Transformers Fan (still am and not ashamed to admit it(!)) and still have a lot of the figures, apart from the ones that (sadly) broke beyond repair. Thankfully, Powermaster Optimus wasn't one of them and still holds pride of place in my collection.

Fantastic review! I never had the PM Optimus as a kid, but I did buy the God Ginrai reissue when it came out, and it swiftly became my favourite TF figure ever (and that's saying something because my TF collection is sizeable). After seeing your comparison, I've decided to track down an original PM Optimus as well!

I think I was in the eight grade when this piece came out, and y'know what? I didn't care. I was so happy to see Optimus Prime back that I just had to have this version of him. Somehow I was never bothered by the fact that the combined mode was really just a giant brick. Every now and then I'm tempted to pick up the Japanese G1 release to stand next to my custom Titans Return/Perfect Effect Powermaster Optimus on the shelf to show the evolution of the character. Love this guy so much. Thanks, Michael!

Yup, Takara would often change the eye colours for the reissues to make them more toon accurate, like changing Trailbreaker's visor from red to blue for the encore reissue.
