They had a sensational tour in the US where they sold out all seven of their shows. After many years, they are exploding this year (both in Japan and around the world). Thanks for continuing to review them.

My understanding is from chatting with people who were there is that even though the show is call Jimmy Kimmel Live they did 3 takes of this performance, and it was show a month before it aired. So it could be that slight dip in energy you noticed was that it was not all one continuous continuous, but and edited blend of 3 takes.
But I can verify that at their live shows in North America on the Seishun Tour they absolutely killed it. I went to the November 13th show in Toronto and there was not a person in attendance that was not fully engaged with the show. I can also say that from all the various live shows I've been to, from major concerts to cirque du soleil to musicals, plays, operas, and even pro-wrestling events. The ladies of Atarashii Gakko are absolutely top tier performers. They are so good live. They are so on point, and so in tune with each other and the audience. They are always looking right at the audience, and can react instantly to a person in the crowd without even missing a step. Plus I think it really helps with international audiences that the choreography they come up with tells the the story in many cases of the song which really helps overcome language barriers draw you into the performance. If they do another North American Tour, and they have a show near your city, I'd tell anyone to go see them. Seriously, fewer then 10% of all performers can do it like Atarashii Gakko!

Thank you. I was wondering how they were doing Jimmy Kimmel since their official AG IG showed that their tour was over and that they were back in Japan. I wondered if they flew back just for the show which wouldn't have been efficient. As much as I liked the performance, I wished they would have performed a song that allowed them to show their individual personalities.

They just posted a Dance Practice video for this song.
Not sure if you want to do a whole other reaction, but you might enjoy watching it.

AG! are really starting to explode in popularity, both internationally, and in Japan.
I follow the members on social media, and they've done a bunch of commercials this year and quite a few TV appearances.

The dance practice video is absolutely recommended! (i like all versions i've seen, but that one shows the choreo at its best)

These are the same outfits in the official video. As to this performance, the biggest difference is how small the stage is.
Again it's Their choreography, it isn't given to them. Also they had a very successful US tour this year. There are some decent Fan-Cam and a couple of great interviews. They also toured Australia after the US!

I don't know if anyone watched the whole show this clip was from, but the first guest was Adam Levine of Maroon 5. At one point Jimmy played a clip of Adam from the 90's when he was just starting out, and he tried to crowd surf and it went very badly and he ended up getting hurt, but not seriously, and that he said he never tried it again after that show. I was thinking while he was talking, knowing the musical guest was Atarashii Gakko that he should stick around and get some tips from Suzuka. She'd be able teach him how to do it right, she's always doing her Rock Star thing and jumping into the crowd, getting up on top of the Bar, or DJ booth, or showing up in the Balcony. She's way more of a Rock Star performer then Adam lol

The crowd was so hype! Their performance did seem a little diff than the music video, maybe because they had 1 hand occupied holding the mics? It's crazy how farm they've come.

Former dancer (I'm old now 😂) we know how movement changes with venue. Also, being of Japanese descent, I recognize that so much of the choreography stems from traditional Japanese dance. Looking from a cultural perspective, AG is on the vanguard of departing from the "standard" Jpop mold of being demure and kawaii. It's very refreshing, you should also look at Baby Metal 😊

Just to add to this, Japan has always had room for female acts that departed from the "standard" Jpop mold of being demure and kawaii. You should check out some of Hello Projects earliest works. AG reminds me very much of those songs, but AG songs have a deeper subject matter. Some songs I recommend: (note: I only recommend the originals because the rerecordings don't have the same fun charm) By Morning Musume: Love Machine , Love (renai) Revolution 21, The Peace, Koi no Dance Site, Mr. Moonlight Ai no Big Band, Hyokkori Hyotan Jima; By Pucchi Moni: Baby! Koi ni Knockout, By W: Robo Kiss, Ai no Imi o Oshiete, By Aya Matsuura: Goodbye Natsuo, Yeah! Meccha Holiday, Momoiro no Kataomoi, By 10nin Matsuri: Dancing Matsuri.
I think that, after the AKB48 machine toppled Hello Project as the dominant producer of girl groups, that "fun" element was lost for a while. I am glad to see it finally making a comeback with AG.

I can understand what you're saying about the routine. This song is a real anthem, a "call to arms" to live every day fully and pursue happiness. It's a bit different in tone and rhythm than a lot of their past stuff. Some fans seemed a little disappointed with this song at first, but I quite enjoyed it.
It seems like you haven't seen the music video for this song. Definitely check it out, reaction or not. It's a fun homage to the classic Japanese monster movies of the 60's. Might help to explain the choreography and costumes as well.
Thanks for sharing you reaction and fangirl excitement with us.

Just the last few weeks there rise has been staggering. All those years playing tiny venues and handing out leaflets. Also so proud and happy for them. Not just Kimmel but check the Tokyo Metro Gym footage. The whole concert is available with 8K fans. Then on Tuesday they are playing the Budokan and word is that the venue is sold out !! Thats 15,000 odd. Go girls !!

I second or third that it was a bit subdued compared to what they normally do. I was expecting them to pop off, but they kept a standard energy level. Then again whenever I watch other Japanese dance videos, I now am typically let down because I am expecting something like what AG can do. At least there is still Perfume. I do think it was caused by the uniforms, helmets, and boots that looked like they have heels. Normally they are in uwabaki, which are flexible shoes with good grips. You could definitely tell a difference, when I saw them live in DC when they jumped their feet hit their butts, yet here it's just a cute little hop.

This might have been the first TV appearance for them where they would know that they were not the 'big' draw for the audience. I think you can see they're confidence build as that audience joined in.

When I first saw this, I felt so proud of them, and didn't shut up about it for at least a couple of days 🥺
Part of me wishes that they sort of double-featured it with Otonablue because it's their biggest song, easy to get the crowd involved, and would really allow them to show off their energy. Either way they did amazing, and I am so so so so proud of AG 😭

Most Japan bands/groups/singers have 3 different styles to their SONGS - Music Video , LIVE concert , and IF needed - a TV version . Watch Atarashii Gakko Pinapple Kryptonite and " First Take "version of Otonablue !
btw : My Favorite is Band Maid - whose LIVE concert style is them at their Best ! 🥰

I think the performance may have seemed less than the full AG experience because they were each holding a microphone, and so the choreography didn't include a lot of cool arm movements that would otherwise be there with no microphones for them to hold.

i mean yes they had to make 3 takes and performance the song multiple times but i think especially in this song they very much resemble soldiers and thats why they move so rapidly and not very flowy like normally. also their big helmets definitely don't help in moving perfectly.

They are slowly allowing their image to GROW UP. That's what's different. It's not a sudden change, but it is an evolution. I think it's great. The old schoolgirl thing had gotten stale. I think after "Candy", entertaining though it was, they realized they were headed in the wrong direction.

This song is very difficult to express.
I'm Japanese, but when I first heard this song, I couldn't sense the theme.
If you don't understand the lyrics, you can't understand what the performer wants to do, and I think the lyrics are difficult for people who don't know that Japanese society is suffering from a sense of stagnation.
To be clear, I don't think it's a song that should be taken to overseas TV shows.
