    I stumbled upon several US videos where an "instructor" is adament that you have to rev match and heel toe otherwise your clutch and engine will break down soon. Have been driving manuals in Europe for 20 years and never heard about it until recently let alone being instructed to do so. Not to mention it would be practically impossible, unsafe and ardous task to do that in city driving. This is the channel to learn manual, this is how to drive manual. Not race, drive.

      He is doing that several times, e.g. ruclips.net/video/tvj_59dyvHA/видео.htmlm22s. Basically afstet downshifting into 2nd gear, he's holding the clutch in the friction zone / biting point before clutching out. Blipping the throttle and heel-toe are for experience drivers only and are not really needed while slowing down the car.

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад

      I don't have one yet Monice but I think you mean when you come off the highway and maybe you have to make a left or right at the intersection? I hope to make a video but what you have to do is look ahead and see if the light is green and you are making a left you will most likely have to downshift into 3rd gear if there is no heavy traffic and make your turn. If you have to make a right you most likely will have to downshift into 2nd gear

    • @SolarPunkism
      @SolarPunkism 6 лет назад +2

      I mean more so, when you're coming off the ramp and have to merge, most likely merge left. After the ramp, try and find a gap, without stalling, with heavy traffic. I think 8:18 might be a good example, looks like stop and go on the highway

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад

      @@SolarPunkism oh I see well if itis heavy traffic you would have to go down to 2nd gear and then I would learn how to clutch and coast and you are probably going to have to do a mix of clutch and coast and brake so the coasting will help you go real slow have you seen this one ruclips.net/video/dAQPhYAB9ok/видео.html and you should learn how to go down into first if it is really heavy traffic just incase you need to I made a video about that

    Firstly thanks a ton for ur videos.. pretty awesome the way u explain and the content u cover... can u please make a video on the below two topics? Clutch release and gas required on sharp incline curves. I have found the momentum to be maintained but sometimes the clutch is at the biting point and the gas enough but not to push the car up the steep incline and the clutch is relased thinking in blocking the car to move forward but somehow its the gas and the car stalls. So some help around steep incline curves would be appreciated. Second is on how to maintain clutch in off roading as generally i have to keep riding the clutch at very slow speed yet more gas due to stones.. also if i am on a steep incline and give lots of gas but the clutch is released shud the car stall? Whts the mechanics behind it? Thanks and awaiting a video on this. Once again Ur awesome 😊😊

      some of these sharp incline turns maybe they are so slow you need to put in first gear are you able to use your first gear? ruclips.net/video/Cd36Lx7NwdM/видео.html if turn is so slow that you are losing all momentum then I assuming it is slower than 2nd gear?

      @@latinphoenix5356 hello money shift is when you over rev the engine so when you put in too low gear while going at too high speed for that gear. You can see I brake to slow car down first then do downshift. 3rd gear can go over 120kmh in this car so for example of you are going at 150kmph in 4th gear then downshift to 3rd without slowing car down then that is when the engine can over rev past the redline and that is the "money shift"that is why it is important to learn how to brake and slow the car down that is the most important part of this video. Does it make sense? or not really?

    • @latinphoenix5356
      @latinphoenix5356 6 лет назад +1

      @@DriveManual so in your car if you went at 150kmph in 4th (aprox.6000rpm) and then downshifted to 3rd, you would do moneyshift (the engine would over rev above redline, aprox 14000rpm )??

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад +1

      @@latinphoenix5356 check this out www.teammfactory.com/calculator . exactly if you push it past the redline that is when you usualy blow up the engine but a money shift can be when you put in lower gear by mistake but don't blow up the engine by luck because you are going slower maybe the engine revs just before redline it is still a miss shift/money shift same thing you are just lucky you don;t blow up engine. That is why you learn to shift at slow speeds. So if you make mistake it will not blow up and cost you money.

    when in neutral and let's say you're "cruising" at 20mph, you pop it in second gear and slowly release the clutch... while releasing the clutch can you brake at the same time or is that a no no?

      @DriveManual  6 лет назад

      sure why not? but no reason to do anything slowly like I said in video.

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад

      like this something that might happen going to a stop light you put it in neutral to coast because you see the red then it goes green and you put into 2nd and smooth clutch out then go

  • @RzVids
    @RzVids 5 лет назад +1

    I noticed every time you smoothly let off the clutch the RPM’s went up gradually Why does this happen? Could you rev up the engine when you downshift wouldn’t that be the same thing except you could let off the clutch faster?

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  5 лет назад +1

      First you learn this and then you learn how to rev match downshift( if you want & there are lots of how to rev match video out there )....but this is the right way to learn how to downshift a manual for beginners and if you only stick with this way it is perfectly fine as I explain here ruclips.net/video/FxNwR7tcdfc/видео.html

    • @RzVids
      @RzVids 5 лет назад

      @@DriveManual As a beginner, I did what you did in this video, but when I downshifted (No gas, just changed down a gear) from 4 to 3 and then 3 to 2 the rpm goes down and then shoots back up like the engine is being forced into matching the speed of the road. The cars momentum also abruptly decreases. I'm not sure if I'm letting out the clutch too fast, because I think I do it relatively smooth not too slow, not too quick but it keeps happening. If I accelerated to 50 mph and I'm in 5th gear and I only have like a short travel to a corner, do I need to give it gas? But if I don't want to, how do I know what speed is appropriate for the lower gear?

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  5 лет назад

      @@RzVids Hello first it is really important that you practice everything at slower speeds. 50 mph is too fast to have questions what will happen, you should know what will happen just like at 40,30 and 20. Understand the car will want to decrease speed as the clutch engages this is perfectly normal. You should not be looking at the rpm at all so it should not matter if it shoots up because you are not driving for the rpm gauge , you're driving for control, smoothness and yourself. If you watch this video you can also see the rpm shoot up and that is when you will feel that jerk as the clutch grabs and the car will want to decrease speed... so you know that I am feeling it as well. Just like in the rev match video and this video I did not mention to look at rpm gauges. The whole idea when shifting up or down is to bring the car to the right speed then shift up or down. If you watch part 1 of this video the main focus is braking and slowing the car down for the corner. In fact in part 1 of this video ruclips.net/video/pSpZ_bTDX9w/видео.html there is no shifting at all because I want you to brake to slow the car down and THEN learn to shift. It is sooo important people learn that you are slowing the car down with the brakes then you shift you aren't shifting to slow the car down. If you are slowing your car down enough for the shift and you are watching the rpm gauge raise up like in this video it is perfectly normal, if the car is jerking a little as the clutch engages it is perfectly normal. That is how you downshift a manual car no giving gas is needed. The hardest downshift will be the 3-2 downshift in a straight line if you are doing it for a corner I made a different video. ruclips.net/video/_TiguiOlhC0/видео.html Please keep me updated and reply back I really wamt to know how you are doing.

    I'm assuming you don't need to blip the throttle because your car doesn't jerk a lot then downshifting?

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад +1

      Lots of these downshifts were done under braking if you watch them the only way to blip would be to do it before the braking, after the braking or come on and off the brakes and blip and downshift in between which is wrong way to do it. The only purpose of a "heel toe downshift" is a rev match(blip) downshift under braking. No one needs to learn a heel toe downshift for the street but everyone needs to know how to downshift under braking and only way to learn that without blipping is to learn how to be smooth when bringing the clutch up past bite point or it is jerky and harsh

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад

      @@inFAdepT like if you learn both ways then you will know why the blip may help reduce clutch wear because it is a quicker clutch release and smoother but it is important to learn both ways because if you are not feeling it quicker or smoother than you may not even know if you are blipping right or wrong and at low rpm/ speeds even with the blip you still have to ride the clutch a bit you can see in my rev match video. But I bet 99% of people do not blip. Also these people say lots of things like don't coast and I coast in all my vids I even made videos how to coast, they say don't hold the clutch in I do that all the time, they say only to fast clutch release like pop the clutch on the starts...I never do that , they say only use handbrake for hill starts....I don't think I have ever used a handbrake in any video even that one where I was driving around for an hour. What about the people who say don't blip on starts that will ruin your car or only use your whole leg lol. Lots of people on here saying my clutch is going to burn up soon and yet you and 100 others came and ride my clutch over and over on purpose and it's the same clutch from the 1st video. Don't worry too much about the clutch just don't do those seesaw starts with clutch and gas and don't give too much gas on hill starts those 2 are where you burn up the clutch fast...oh and don't give gas at bite point when shifting like a seesaw when you are learning that is bad too.

  • @davidheran1

    Can you describe more on smoothing the clutch? Does it mean to hold the clutch little longer? Or release the clutch more in slower motion?

    • @DriveManual
      @DriveManual  6 лет назад

      Do you have a manual car now? when you are driving on the street do you release clutch fast on downshift or you do it smoothly? Because most cars when you release clutch fast on the downshift it will jerk the car and you will feel a bump so you release it a little slower so it is a little smoother but if you hold clutch tooo long it is like riding the clutch and it can wear your clutch so you only do it enough you feel it is not too jerky
