Lovely work and a pleasure to watch a craftsman with so much experience, making it look effortless. Here in the UK, trying to even find a gunsmith able to do this work is becoming a battle. Added to which, the cost of doing this on those older fixed choke guns is becoming prohibitive. As we face the lead shot ban, so many lovely old guns will be scrapped because there are not enough crafts men and women left to carry out such work at an affordable cost. The gun shop shelves have a lot of bargains on them at present!
Absolutely Brilliant video - You explain perfectly what I have to do with one of my guns. I have a Damascus Double barreled WR Pape 12 gauge- made around 1900 - It was made as a 'live pigeon gun' with both 30 inch barrels originally made with full choke. I bought the gun in really superb condition - but someone has opened up the firing barrel to half choke to make the gun more usable - there are some small marks at the end of the otherwise pristine barrel and I now know how these marks were made - and that I can have these marks polished out - I thank you ! It is ironic that William Pape ( Newcastle UK) is credited with the invention of choke boring !
Nice video! I recently bought my dad a Mossberg 500 .410 Could only find this gun coming from Mossberg with a choked barrel instead of a .410 cylinder barrel for when having slug rounds. After searching the entire internet for over a month and hardly finding anyone selling the 410 barrels, and those barrels being choked which we dont want, we're faced with only a couple options: 1) If wanting to have 2 barrels for the purpose of one being a choked barrel and also having a slug barrel, we would have pay a ridiculous 200.00 for just a barrel that we hen have to cut off the end of the barrel (approx 1" to 1 1/2" that creates the choke) and then drill n tap what will become the new end of the barrel for the bead site 2) After buying another barrel, use a 10.5 mm drill (converts to .413) which is closest to the .410 inside diameter which is whats needed to send a .410 bore slug through the barrel Sure wish that Mossberg would get on the ball and start providing barrels for their customers. Yes we know that communist china's covid virus put a decrease in manufacturing parts for our guns, but with the demand being so high for the 410 shotgun, would think that Mossberg would have made the 410 parts one of their priorities
I figured the barrel would have to be in some sort of a clamping device when honing. I guess it doesn’t matter but does the barrel wobbling not affect the honing?
What do asterisks mean on Remington barrels? I've seen them with many & the more there were the better the quality appeared to be, I've been wondering for over 30yrs
It is great to see the videos back up and running. Thank you for sharing these with us.

There are a few people in the UK that can hone out fixed chokes.

Great video Art. Question, are those wood blocks in your vise?
Love your videos great work!!
Had my 12 done here in NZ,forcing cone and choke for steel.
Better than modern plastic spastic.

As a machinist, that was the 1st thing I saw , my thought as well ~
Do you find that a lot of the choke opening work customers want is for the ability to shoot steel shot more efficiently?
