Basically, every item that has a value when selling (higher than 0) used gives 1 experience when it's used in crafting. Items that give 0 money when sold do not give experience when crafting. But while the minimum experience gotten is 1 (if you use 1 item that has a value), for some reason, the minimum experience you get when crafting something without any valuable items is 2. Hence any item that only uses wood, blocks (like stone) etc. will always give 2 experience. That's why wood, which you can get automatically with ease, can easily give you fodder to level up crafting. By the way, don't craft torches. Craft chests. Those can be sold, even if you will need more wood.
