For me, the music is moving and utterly persuasive at this tempo. I've heard it played more slowly and with a great deal more rubato but this performance seems just right in every way. Many thanks...I've loved this piece since childhood.
This correct tempo portrays the tranquil and reflective mood one feels when gliding in a gondola. It's not meant to portray the actual speed of the gondola in water.
Okay but to everyone saying that this is being played too quickly, it quite clearly says "Allegretto" in the description. It's intentionally being played this quickly.
Joann Cat No, no i mean in the description of the video. The guy playing this is playing it at the speed it's labelled as him playing. That's all I was saying- that people shouldn't be surprised, because the description tells them what tempo he intends to play the piece at. I'm not sure what tempo my sheet music says, and I don't have it anywhere near me to check, but either way, that was the point I was trying to make.
His tempo beautiful. What is absolutely impressive though his is dynamic control. A lot of piano players nowadays lack that quality. That control is amazing
That was perfect. I have a recording of the great Murrray Perahia playing this at around the same speed and just as beautifully. Thank you for a gorgeous rendition.
Cette musique se déplie comme un livre d'images plein d'étoiles, où viennent filer les oiseaux, tourner les farandoles, claquer les crécelles et danser les sorciers 👀
This is still one of my favorite songs to this day...and I quit lessons as a kid in the middle of learning it. Unfortunately I don’t have the discipline to teach myself pieces like this without an instructor anymore. 😔
For those who things the tempo is too fast. You are not correct. It is stated ob the sheet Allegretto which means a bit slower than Allegro (which no doubr you are aware means "fast").
For the ones that say toooo fast.music can be fast or slow its the players style so you cant say that it has to be slower then that.there arent any masters like this anymore love your playing!:)
Elsa Frozen just to show you where you made a BIG mistake is that when it comes to classical music you have to stick with the composer's requirements in order to retain the mood of the piece. If the piece was created to be slow, then it should be played in the same speed. Also, it is nice to add some details of your preference in the piece, but not too many. The piece was supposed to give out feelings of melancholy and drama when played. That's what I believe and I hope I didn't disturb you.
Hush up everyone, it wasn't too fast. This is a piece that sounds nice a variety of speeds, and I personally enjoyed this interpretation. You could go even faster without ruining it tbh, but this is a fine tempo.
It's one thing to get all the notes right, and it's another to convey the desired tempo and dynamics! That's why my own performance sometimes sounds soulless to me albeit fine to others. You are splendid!
Great Job! It's supposed to play like this, like water rippling, not the actually boat itself. Doubt y'all haters can even play it. It's freaking ALLEGRETTO!!!
This ain't supposed to be plaied slower. One of my piano test during my childhood was with this song and I plaied it approximately the same speed that he is doing. The examinator gave to me a perfect grade for my presentation, and I'm pretty sure that they know more than most of the people saying that it's too fast.
+Serephina Jung It is just a personal preference, but I agree with the chinese person. There can be so much more style and personality added to this song. Plus, I thought the pauses were at the wrong spots. 2 slight misstakes also at the start. But, you still play better than me, ha ha.
I love this piece but I agree with some below that this is played a little to fast. Picture the gondola's in Venice lazily rowing through the city and you get much slower image in your head.
Music is so personal, so up for interpretation...the lush feeling is lost at this speed to me, but it's certainly not "wrong". Maybe this is just how the pianist feels it. At this tempo I fear he might be a little mad, but his playing was enjoyable. Oh well.
Mendelssohn himself can play this piece at the tempo he intended and still get critized here.
Lol
And the word criticised should have 2 c’s in it! Lol and either s or z! 😊😊

PREACH!
Tamar Mack on my copy it says Adante sostenuto
Joann Cat I've just checked again and it still definitely says "Allegretto tranquillo"
Tamar Mack I know, on whatever copy you're playing, but I have the sheet music in my keith snell level 7 book and it says adante sostenuto there
Joann Cat No, no i mean in the description of the video. The guy playing this is playing it at the speed it's labelled as him playing.

I found a wonder !!! This brilliant song talks to soul !!!
what a beautiful piece of musical art
Love the steady tempo and the dynamic to this piece!! Very well done
É simplesmente de tirar o fôlego! Conforme vou envelhecendo, mais vou ficando envolvido pela música de Mendelssohn
Lovely interpetation!! Thankyou

Brilliant. The depth here is incredible.
A very elegant and enchanting performance. Thanks, Joel.
I love your tempo...I'm practicing it at the lower speed but will aim to play near your tempo. C'est tres bien interprète

Magnifique. Musique romantique et le pianiste TOP
The last handful of measures were ethereal, in all senses of that word.
Absolutely breathtaking! Thank you for sharing your talent. This just made my day!
Just terrific playing. i have bookmarked this. i will eventually get to this piece in suzuki book 6 and hope to be able to play it someday.
This is amazing!
I love it😍

That's really fast going gondola. I'm surprised no one fell in the water yet.
Good job though.
Michelle Ma that was good😂😂😂😂
I play this piece for my 7th grade RCM piano exam and that’s exactly what my mom said. xd

Chanson sans paroles...qué belleza!
Lovely tone and cadence. really works for me.
amazing
Well done! Nice playing!
A beautiful performance, but the song is meant to be played way slower than that...it's a gondola, not a jet boat!
True
This is one of my favorites comments ever.
Someone's going to fall over if you play too fast.
But its not actually suppossed to be play slower. The marking is 56-63 for the dotted quarter note in 6/8 time
Irina Downing so please post your own performance or shut the hell uo
Amazing !!!

there's the other venetian gondola lieder from mendelssohn
I love this song..anyway it's played😊
I first listened this in allegretto so I can't listen to other speeds,it's very calming and mysterious in this speed if you ask me.
superbe.
gorgeous, wonderful
Well played 👍👍
The "Lieder ohne Worte" are my favorite piano pieces by Mendelsohn. Bravo Mr. Hastings!

Speed run?
I feel it's played a bit too fast. But Thanks for uploading
No it's not. It's played at the tempo the composer himself intended. Rest in peace to Joel Hastings. He was a wonderful amazing pianist.
That's a very speedy gondola ride, no offence :P

The Venetian motorboat song
The speed shows that the water flows calmly, if it's fast it's too slow and mushy, not the style the composer intended
