    Amazing things. But that high lift wing and the balloon tyres, must limit the top speed. I'm guessing about 100 knots. Anyone care to educate me on this?

      a piper cub can't even hit that, I don't think

      but they aren't designed to fly fast

      These are bush pilots in places such as Alaska. They fly people and supplies in and out of mountainous terrain locations where sometimes there is nothing to land on but a 20 foot long stretch of flat ground. The modifications necessary to make it a STOL plane limit other abilities such as top speed: Every modification you make to a vehicle is a Compromise, a trade-off.

      it'll probably cause more drag and less speed but they are not built for speed. They are built to be able to take off and land anywhere like short grass runways, gravel bars, and stuff like that. The bigger faster planes would need too long of a runway to be able to do that. Somebody could probably correct me on this but I believe that there are even different propellers for whether you want to optimize your take off climb or cruise speed.

      yeah these planes are slow, some make up for it with power tho

    What's the white stuff hitting the ground on takeoff? Nitrous or water injection or some such?

    Interesting to see how the dampers dramatically increase braking perfromance by reducing bouncing

    • @c172215s
      @c172215s 9 лет назад +1

      SuperYellowsubmarin Most do not have "dampers". The dampening comes from the tires scrubbibg as the gear spreads on landing.

      ***** That's the point ! Steve Henry at 6:00 has damped struts, and the difference is amazing ...

      That is a Just Aircraft Super STOL. (modified Highlander). Yes they will handle a higher rate of descent, but not necessarily help you land shorter. Certainly don't help on take-off.

      SuperYellowsubmarin He doesn't get it Super.... whoosh.. right over his head.. keep the braking wheel on the ground, shorten the roll out.. yes.

      SuperYellowsubmarin I wonder if it would work to rig up a way to let a bunch of air out of the tires on downwind, so that they’d be flaccid and less bouncy for landing.
      Or is that against the rules?

    hey guys...how much does it cost building one of these?

    • @13megaprime
      @13megaprime 9 лет назад

      To build one, the cheapest Zenith i found on a quick google search was about 30 thousand dollars. The aircraft in this video seemed to be mostly Piper Cubs, modified of course. A stock j-3 cub is also 30K on the low end, if you can even find that many.

      13megaprime hey Prime, thanks for the info, and i meant also to ask, the engine separately bought,does it fall within this 30k,doesn't it?

    • @13megaprime
      @13megaprime 9 лет назад

      eugene aliongo The engine cost separately is going to depend on how big your engine is going to be on the plane. The 4 cyl. Lycoming O-320 is about 8000 to 17000, based on a 10 minute google search on some websites.

      eugene aliongo Hey, no problem man. Just be sure you get some help from the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and some experienced guys to help make sure you're on the right track.
      Good luck!
