To move the text, make sure that your mouse cursor is directly over the actual pixels of the text before pressing your mouse button. If you click on the white space in the middle of the letter O for example, then you will probably be moving what is behind the text. To make your setup look like mine, go to the “Windows” menu and select “Single-Window Mode.” Then go to the “Windows” menu and select “Dockable Dialogs” and then select Layers, Channels, Paths, and Undo History.
Best tutorial. You want to teach people. Most gimp tutorials go so fast because the teacher wants to have 'a show and tell'. "Look how clever I am". They are not really trying to teach
I watch a LOT of Gimp and Blender tutorials. I've seen a few other good ones, but yours are some of the best and they are consistently good. You are fast enough to not bore me, but slow enough I can keep up, and very thorough. Thank you for the great tutorials!
Really enjoyed this tutorial. Pace was just right: Didn't need to keep pausing and replaying. Great effect that looks much more complex than it is. 11 minutes well spent. Thanks.
..I have just upgraded my GIMP2 to 2.8, and like the new selections on the 'tips' of pencil, brushes....still working with 'layers', and appreciate this very much..this is what I call, "relaxation" in PC art.....endless :]
If you're using GIMP version 2.8 then go to the "Windows" menu and select "Single-Window Mode." The single window mode is not available in earlier versions of GIMP.
Great tutorial, thanks. I'm just scratching the surface with Gimp. Used its basic functions on and off for a few years - but this is taking me into a new dimension!
Thanks for the suggestion. Suggestions are always welcome. The effect that I was trying to achieve was for the supernova to be behind the text and then have the rays of light shine thru the center of the M to the front. Therefore, my intent was for the rays to be visible in front of the M, after passing thru the center.
This is just another awesome tutorial. Note: There is a very quick option to remove guidelines by going up to menu>image>guides>remove all guides. Anyway..can you pretty please make some more videos on realistic 3d metal looking text in blender? You're the BEST.
Good tutorial. You spoke slow and switfty. Even not being an english speaker, I could understand it very well. The time between phases was a good thing too. I was able to listen and make all the stuff at same. Thank you.
In GIMP version 2.8, to save your project go to the "File" menu and select "Save As." To save just your final picture, go to the "File" menu and select "Export."
Wow, what a great tutorial,so clear and easy to understand, keep up the good work, and keep these videos coming you are a great teacher in using gimp...thank you :)
I like your voice and the tutorial is great because you sound patient unlike some vids where some people just run through it w/out explanations. Just sub
Hello I was wondering is there a way of making an image that has a Star Wars Lightsaber effect? I know Adobe Photoshop can do this but I can't afford that software. I'm therefore looking to Gimp for doing my artwork an photos.
Oh my gosh! This was the best tutorial I have ever seen on RUclips. It was detailed, helped me learn new techniques, and I am happy with my final product. Thank you so much for making this tutorial, it made my day! :D
Thanks for this tutorial - much appreciated. Probably the best tutorial I have watched on RUclips. Very easy to understand & very informative, Thanks again.
wow! This is great. I just upgraded my mac and found out I can't use my photoshop any longer. just when I was about to cut my wrists, I found gimp. but it's a little different. now you come along and show me everything I need to know? Thank you. I'm subscriber. I'll be eagerly watching for more.
Really enjoyed watching your tutorial videos! Your speaking/training skills are very good. Even with ADHD was able to stay focused and learn something. So many other tutorials jump around and don't flow well, yours don't! I like how you demonstrate the beginning to the end as this results in a very well rounded tutorial. Your kind of like a digital Bob Ross :)
Speech was clear. Pauses were appreciated. Would like to know about more about the basics of undo (from within the layer panel) and layers; of course as a beginner! I have a long way to go and to you: excellent instruction. Thanks
He has it in single window mode, which was added in version 2.8 I think. Click on the Window tab at the top of your screen and select "Single Window Mode". Also, Gimp can be customized in many ways. Watch or read some tutorials about how to customize the look of your Gimp.
Excellent tutorial, thank you. A quick question - is there a quick procedure for altering the text (i.e. the GIMP title), after you have finished it? The layers are merged so I didn't want to have to undo all actions to achieve this.
Once again an excellent tutorial.Just curious! what would you do to have the background test have some depth, as to not look as thin? Anyway your videos are the best. thank You for your time and effort. I have learned more about the interface watching you than anyone, Especially the text. 2.8 had me a bit confused until you explained in detail.
Good crisp tutor ! . . . . how do you make the shadow crisp at the base of the letter becoming increasingly blurred as the shadow gets further away from the base?
Thanks for making these videos. You do a great job instructing ! ! I've used you're 'Text Effect' methods on (vector created) shapes so it works with non-text shapes too. Please make MORE tutorials ! !
Hey another great tutorial :-) Relatively easy to follow and great result. The only problem I had was with the shift key when trying to draw a straight line. I click the mouse, hold the shift key and tried to draw a straight all at the same time line but it didn't work. What I should have done was click the mouse once, release, hold the shift key and THEN drag a straight line. Question: is it possible to use different colour other than black for the text?
awsum, I am learning in a pretty quick pace thnx to these truly great tutorials, it is such a surreal feeling, almost as if I was actually watching it :P :D
Brilliant Video. I love these RUclips vid's, I've learned soooo much and allways learn something new. I thank you for the time and trouble you went to in uploading it. Much appreciated thanks.
Do you take requests? If so, I was wondering if this effect can be done with an image instead of text. For instance, the 'Jedi Order' symbol. Here's the tricky part, though. The image would have to be .png format. There is an outer circle and a design in the center of that. The color between the two objects would need to be transparent so the lighting effect could shine through. If you could make a tutorial on how to do this, It would be most appreciated. I'm looking to make a banner for my page
Thank you, the voice of instructor is perfect, the tutorial is helpful and I like it so much! Please try make some different effects than supernova or planets etc. Thank you! I very appreciate it!
Great tutorial. Worked like a charm for me but for a few glitches along the way that I believe had to do with GIMP itself. All were resolved though and my result looks 'just like the picture!'
Is there a beginners video for the new user who has never used anything like GIMP,Photoshop,or inkscape? I'm as green as they come and just wrote down your instructions in this video, ( my outdated printer is not supported anymore by manufactures with ink). And I filled 4 pages. You make it look intuitive and easy, but I'm not familiar with GIMP and want to learn starting with the basics and practice. any tips???
Very great tutorial. Very easy to understand and follow. Thanks keep it up. Question how do you invert image make it appear backwards so i can print it and place it on a tshirt
thanks very good tutorial. my gimp 2.8.10 does not show the image in the supernova window, but a question mark so I can not see where to position the supernova in regards to the text. do you happen to know why.?
Tutor4u, you are awesome. If I had you as a teacher in H.S or College, I would have graduated with honors instead of a 3.9 GPA :-). Thanks for the information.
okay so when I open my Gimp don't have the Tools options in my tool box and i don't have the open box on the right of this video can you help me please. I'm still trying to learn ty
why dosnt this work on mine i click when i drag down the selection to the text and hit the fill bucket tool it fills the entire area below the text in grey the entire work area is covered going to the select menu to select none it does not allow me to use it..i have tried this 5 times ans still dosnt work what am i missing iam doing this step by step with you but as far as i can go is to this point..cannot get half screen in grey..

Outstanding tutorial! All steps are shown completely and actions are not rushed. Thanks again.

your clear instructions makes this process a whole lot easier
Your tutorials are excellent! I'm working on a book cover and was in need of a tutorial of implementing 3D text on an existing photo.
I am just beginning to learn gimp and this was incredibly helpful. Your presentation was slow and clear. I liked that a lot. Thanks.
Good tutorial. You spoke slow and switfty. Even not being an english speaker, I could understand it very well.

thankyou, first tuturial ive ever used with gimp, very clear and precise.
I'm new at Gimp and am enjoying your tutorials.
If you select the Move Tool first then you will be able to drag the guide lines off the image.
Wow, what a great tutorial,so clear and easy to understand, keep up the good work, and keep these videos coming you are a great teacher in using gimp...thank you :)
I haven't tried using a different text color but you could experiment. It's an interesting idea.
Go to the "Windows" menu, at the top of the GIMP window, and select "Dockable Dialogs" and then "Tool Options."
Wow great video. Just starting with GIMP, your instructions made me to create with ease. thanks for sharing.
Simple and easy to follow tutorial that can be stretched to the limits of my imagination. Thanx for making it!

The best tutorial I've seen! Many are good at using GIMP but few can teach it to others. You really can teach it. Thank you so much.
Thanks for this tutorial - much appreciated. Probably the best tutorial I have watched on RUclips. Very easy to understand & very informative, Thanks again.

Great tutorial. Clear and stable. Really get to know how to use the tools and options
Speech was clear. Pauses were appreciated. Would like to know about more about the basics of undo (from within the layer panel) and layers; of course as a beginner!
I have a long way to go and to you: excellent instruction. Thanks
I've just complete the task of this tutorial. Thank you, it was fun. Looking forward to your other lessons.

0:44 No need to activate the bucket tool - just *drag* the black color with your mouse onto the canvas. Works perfect.
Very cool and nicely presented from someone who knows next to nothing about Gimp

awsum, I am learning in a pretty quick pace thnx to these truly great tutorials, it is such a surreal feeling, almost as if I was actually watching it :P :D
The tutorial was great, but how do you get rid of the gray selection that covers the top part of the gimp? It just doesn't look right to me.
Brilliant Video. I love these RUclips vid's, I've learned soooo much and allways learn something new. I thank you for the time and trouble you went to in uploading it. Much appreciated thanks.
