  • In this vlog I bring my #espalier pear tree back under control. There is also a little explanation of #apical #dominance.
Please visit my website and Garden Shop here: www.marksgarde...
I also explain how to make an espalier, and why people like them and their benefits.
Here are the tips and benefits.
    Tips
Plant against a south facing wall.
#Prune to let the light in to #fruit
Remove unwanted growth to promote fruit production
Prune to 4 or 5 downward facing buds to encourage fruit production
    Attach wire to vine eyes
Aim for one horizontal level per year by pruning the leader and allowing the side #shoots to grow horizontally.
Thin out some some juvenile fruits (30%) to avoid over stressing the plant and stopping fruit drop.
    Benefits
Space saving, you can walk past, stepover and plant in two dimensions.
    Maximise yield
    Allows light to fruits
Horizontal branches are exposed to maximum sunlight as the sun passes over.

Thanks Anna. It takes a few years to do it correctly but is worth it in the end.

Great. Thanks Jamie. Good luck with them. My pears are about to reach their peak. A bit behind last year because of the cooler start.

How do you cut the espAlier. Angle of cut. Distance from branch. Numbers of spurs. Planting. Choice of pear tree variety. Advantage of different plants. Good evergreen espalier plants

Hi Mark, great video. Can I ask what rootstock you used for this espalier pear tree?

Hi, I'm afraid I don't know, I think I bought that from a reduced section from memory, without any details. Mark

Why do you leave it to go wild then prune it? Can i prune It soon as I see the new off growing shoots?
    Also great video, nice work

Hi. You can prune it any time you like. But the slight problem might be if you prune off the flowering spurs because the blossom will eventually become the fruit.

I think you should be able to yes. You may need to refresh the soil and feed/water extra. But i have seen small fruit trees successfully grown in larger pots. Good luck with it. Mark

Mark, just seen this post and subscribed to your site. Could you tell me what month this was that you did the pruning of the pear tree. I have an apple and a pear espalier tree on my allotment and the growth this year is rapid🤔. Was going to wait until July but I think it will be a forrest by then😂 thx Jim.

Hi jim, thanks for watching and subscribing. I've moved house since i had the pear, i now live in a beautiful thatched cottage. I'm thinking back to the pear. I think i used to prune it back in the spring time, but only removing the new fresh growth shooting up. Leaving the old fruiting spurs beneath. Is yours espaliered like this one? I'm going to check my other social media to work out when i pruned it. Be back soon.

Hello again Jim. I pruned this in june, after the blossom had set to fruit. I removed all of the none fruiting new shoots. I also thined out a third of the fruits to allow the remainder to thrive. I have i think about 40 pears from this relatively small plant. Has your got small fruits on it yet?

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK , yes Mark it does have fruit on it and like yours plenty of top growth which I will now cut back to six leaves just as your video shows. Thanks very much for your easy to explain post. Also thx for responding so fast too👍.
