This is the best travel program ever made for TV. I loved this journey, I watch it at least once a year and every time I still feel every moment of tension when he misses a connection or gets a delay! This adventure wouldn't be the same today, the end of the 1980s was the last time this could really have been done due to conflicts and air travel replacing so many shipping and train routes, so I'm forever grateful to both the BBC and Palin for taking on this task! Thank You!
Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best, if not THE BEST, travelprogramme ever made for television. The fact that it was a race against the clock, made it all the more interesting. But the way Michael Palin and his fellow culprits made us be part of this wonderful adventure, was truly a sheer delight. A once in a lifetime expe- rience that got me overexcited when I first saw this, way back in '89. And it still does. Indeed a rather remarkable fellow that Michael Palin. NI! NI!
Agreed, 100%! I wonder if people can REALLY appreciate the logistical demands of a trip like this, not just for Michael, but for everything else as well (camera operators, support, etc). Didn't this win the British version of the Emmy for best documentary? If it didn't it should have!
I remember him coming back to England at the end of the journey and how shocked he was by the attitude of his fellow countrymen. He said it was the most foreign land he'd visited.
@OEKIE77 - I absolutely agree. It is my favourite programme of all time. I watch it over and over again. I can only imagine what it was like when it first aired, when people couldn't see the world on TV as much as they can today. No internert as well.
@OEKIE77 you are right, I also saw it in 89 and it inspired me..since then I have seen most of the cities that Michael visited....sometimes the reality is different from what you see on tv or read about.
Yeah BBC - you should be making programs like these. This programe made in 88 still beats the crap out of most of the rubbish you produce these days. Get back to making programs like these.

The world has changed dramatically since this fabulous journey. I remember as though it were yesterday.
No it hasn't. The world is just as tumultuous today as it has ever been. We just didn't have the 24/7 news coverage we do today

I absolutely loved this series I recently watched it on BBC i player I wish he could come back and do it again

This should be released on DVD, and not only in the UK. I loved it and watched every episode when it was broadcast on Swedish Television.
I watched in HK in 1990, a great show
It is on DVD. I've checked it out from my local library several times.
I've watched all of Michael's travels a few dozen times.
I only have one episode on vhs
I just read the book and it was great! I would love to see the show! I now want to go out and read about the rest of his adventures!
Michael Palin is my favourite Monty Python because of this program.

A great show from my childhood. Back in the days where inexplicably they didn't put wheels on suitcases.

It's been ages since I've watched it. Did he make it in 80 days?
Yes, he completed it in 79 days and 7 hours finishing on the 12th December 1988.
