- Today we are getting our landrace field corn in the ground. Over the last couple of years we have been experimenting with making our very own field corn variety by cross pollinating and saving only the corn with traits we want for seed. Our corn is a mix of Jimmy Red and Hickory King. This year we are also adding in a yellow corn called Truckers Favorite from HOSS (check link below). The farm work isn’t always fun. Sometimes it’s just hard labor, but a love for the land and being close to your wife and kids makes it worth it.
I only have raised beds and chickens, but I wouldn’t change it for anything other than a bigger farm further from the city.

I feel the same way when I plant. On my IH planters if I want to slow it down at the seed hopper I’ll put a small gear at the drive wheel and a big gear at the hopper and vise verse to speed it up. I can adjust the spacing a little more in those scenarios by using different cell number plates.

Keep in mind, a smaller drive sprocket has to turn more than one revolution to have the driven sprocket turn one revolution. Ie: a five tooth drive gear needs two revolutions to turn a ten tooth driven sprocket one revolution.
A larger drive gear with a smaller driven gear will plant more seed per foot, because the smaller gear has to spin faster to keep up.
Now this question is obviously coming from someone who doesn't have extensive farming experience but, I noticed when you're discing the soil you only run the tractor the long way of the field. I'm curious why only run it the long way. Since you disc it a few times anyhow, could you do the first pass longways, a second time discing crossways (the short side) and a third time the long way? Would it help till the cover into the soil better? Like in a more even layer than always going the longway? Always love learning something new & your videos are full of awesome content! we'll mainly because theres too much turning around to do if I go the other way, however i like to keep my furrows running against the contour of the land as well to help with erosion

I am a nurse too and my husband Jeremy owns a lawn care/landscaping business also. He’s owned his own business since 1996/97. I’ve been a nurse since 1993. I don’t work now but I do miss it at times. I homeschool our 12 year old son. (Andy when you get ready to sell that F350 manual hit us up because my son is OBSESSED with old gen Ford PowerStroke diesels-7.3’s). He loves the manual transmission too! My husband actually bought an 03 7.3 250 for him haha 😉😅 he claims it and keeps it spotless). When planting you want to stop every now and then to dig up the seed you just put down to ensure the planter is working like you think for spacing and planting depth. My father used to lift the planter at the ends of the rows just enough to plant on top of the ground at the headlands so when he turned around he knew there was seed still coming out before diving back in to plant the next pass, if a problem then there is only the one/partial pass and not half a field. When setting the planter up we always did a short test run on the hard gravel driveway and measured the effective average drop spacing (there will be more seed bouncing on the driveway than in the field) this ensures the gearbox is set in the right gear, right sprockets are mounted, and the seed plates match the kernels giving singles and not a lot of doubles or skips. Error Proofing farm work is important so you are less nervous about the field.
Have to agree that don't seem like much corn to plant a couple of fields with.
It never does when you think on it.
My papa weighed the corn he planted every year, or he would've been doing that same worrying you're doing.
All he did was keep a record of the weight and volume of corn needed for each field.
Everybody ought to be keeping a crop journal, and that'll knock out a bunch of the worrying for you just cause you've got a reference from previous years to look back on.
I agree with what you said about the smaller gear turning faster.
But you don't need my agreement.
And no matter what y'all do on your own land, if it works for y'all, do it.
It is going to be interesting and fun watching your growing season come to fruition.

I love SO MUCH seeing younger families accepting of change. Not being afraid to try something new. Look how beautifully it's benefited your ground. Oh them worries !!!! Lol. I was the same way. Until you see the green you can’t help that. The situation with the fertilizer … those lumps and clumps are a common problem. If you returned like 10 bags they would replace it with 10 bags that had the same problem. What I ended up doing it taking a couple buckets and slowly pouring from one to the other crushing and lumps. It’s slow, tedious but it solves a lot of the problem. There’s got to be a better way, but I’ve not solved it
12inch plant spacing with 30 inch rows you need 16,000 plants per acre. Less if your rows wider. On our silage corn we plant 32,000 plants per acre and that is about 20 lbs of commercial seed per acre. Probably 10 lbs for you? Good luck
With that farmall it’ll be wider than 30 inch rows idk exactly though

Biscuit recipe
2 cups AP flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp Baking Powder
Combine dry ingredients
Add 5 Tbsp butter, cut into flour mixture
Add 1 cup(ish) of milk, slowly combine until you have a workable dough.
Flatten or cut out and place onto a preheated greased pan, cook at 475 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Butter the tops, cut out biscuits and enjoy!

I don't have a garden anymore, so I just plant about 8 tomatoes along a chainlink fence, green beans in my 3 GreenStalk planters, and about 12 okra plants against the front of the house. Then I plant my little kitchen herb garden in pots on my back patio. It isn't much, but it's plenty for me and my son to have some fresh veggies to eat that I got to grow!😘

I'm trusting the Lord your field corn produces a bumper crop this year, Andy!🙏 You prepped the fields good, you used good quality seed, and gave it just enough fertilizer to jump start the seed and keep it sustained! You did good. I look forward for around 10 to 14 days to see how it germinated! Don't know about your side of the NC mountains, but on the TN side we have had an abundance of rainfall. Hopefully, it's been the same over there. Matter of fact, as I'm typing this note on Wednesday morning, we're getting a good, gentle rain! Now will this field corn be used for yours and your dad's livestock? You and Megan are such hard working folks. After your landscaping job, and Megan's nursing job, you come home and work your farm. Love it. I see y'all from Sandy ridge. My wife And I used to live in Sophia,NC. I have a 140 also...just love it.
Great to see the corn going in! Twelve inch spacing is perfect for heirloom corn, less than nine and you end up with silage corn and "no ears". Plant some corn with no fertilizer so you can adapt corn to no inputs the way Lofthouse's Landrace techniques do it. .. Out of curiosity, find out from Hoss exactly what process their seed grower is using (how much fertilizer, tillage, herbicides, insecticides) so you know what dependencies you are unwinding from your corn seed. (I have been working with a red blue purple corn landrace with no fertilizer inputs on 15 inch rows, but a few weeks before we are as warm as you are to plant).

Good job planting Andy. I planted my sweet corn in an area 50 x 50 using 64 gallons of 1 year old chicken poop. Do i need to add more fertilizer to my corn?
I would say not however once its up about 6-8 inches you'll know because it'll be yellowish if it needs feeding more

Like your rig. I run a Farmall M with a wide front end, power steering and a three point hitch. I still run all of the Farmall planters on it but I have a 2 row set of planters on the back. I can plant 3 crops at once but I don't plant but 2. When I pant my corn I drop climbing bean seed at the same time so it will crawl up the corn stalks. I HATE having to bend over and pick beans !!

I don't know about the implements that are available other than a disk and a BushHog what you need for planting larger fields. So I found it very interesting. Thank you.

I really like these end-to-end processing videos where you can see all the work that goes into a particular part of farming.
Enjoyed the video. I think mixing the corn varieties is a good idea. There is probably a little heterosis or hybrid vigor that occurs because of the different genetics in each variety. You made it look easy. :)

In theory, fewer teeth means slower rotation. The more teeth on a gear increases rotation.

Gear ratio should be good it's just like a 3:1 vs 5:1 fishing reel more line reeled in per revolution or less.

over winter I think theres nothing better than crimson clover but in summer theres several, I like buckwheat for a quick cover crop, but cow peas do great for a longer term crop
I started my landrace trial this year! I planted about 1500 row feet. I planted it thick because 2/3 of it is on drip irrigation so I can fertilize thru it; and also get a better cross pollination. Corn is up 12” - 16”. Another week or so, I’ll be ready to hill it. I used 13 different varieties, including the 3 you have. I think I will have to add a couple of the varieties back again next year to get the desired outcome. It’s a trial, but it’s fun to experiment and see what my microclimate and soil will produce. BTW, I checked this morning, and I was unsubscribed again. About the 3rd time.

Excellent job "Mr. Lawson". You can take real pride in how you take care of your land. You are building great soil every year. We used to use Grandpa's old Cole planter behind the tractor but I don't remember what gear it had on it. Your 140 might need a carburetor rebuild. Mine had that same problem several years back and that did the trick.
I think its mad at me because i bought the kubota! haha its been acting up ever since!
