Immersion and exposure in context really is the key. That is how children learn two or three languages here in most of Africa. Good stuff.

In the course of my work as a Learning Support Assistant at a further education college, I did some work with a student who was from Venezuela once. His native language was obviously Spanish. His English was better than he would admit, but he would often use Google Translate in class. I told him that Google Translate is very unreliable (the Japanese RUclipsr Sora The Troll has actually referenced this in his videos) and introduced him to a website called WordReference, which is not suitable for machine-translating whole sentences, but might help him if he gets stuck on a word. He got the shock of his life when he learned that I did Spanish up to A level!
The student, despite being quite proficient in English, would often have outbursts in Spanish. Sometimes he would even swear in Spanish and I would have to calmly remind him that I could understand what he was saying!

I very well agree to your statements. Story telling, pictures are very interesting for kids. They love stories with puppets.
