Cool fun fact on the topic of LEGO working with "early cuts" of movies: the first LEGO Star Wars game was slated to come out before the third movie, so it had an entire level based on a cut scene with an entire cast of cut clone designs. This sort of thing is obviously standard, but that's probably the most egregious example. (The level is "Ruin of the Jedi" by the way)
When I was a kid I wasn’t allowed to see Episode III when it came out but I could play Lego Star Wars. So my entire knowledge of the plot of the movie came from that game. It wasn’t until I finally saw the movie 5 years after it came out that I realized Obi Wan and Yoda never fought clones disguised as Jedi.
I remember when Force Awakens came out and every Tescos had a big section of tie in toys...the vast majority of which were either sold or mostly sold. And then there would be dozens and dozens of copies of the first order snow speeder lego set (and I think other toys of it). Not just unsold but untouched. Like perfectly lined up neatly on the shelf exactly as the staff had put them the day they arrived in the lorry, surrounded by almost empty shelves. I had to google what the hell that was about to discover the scene was deleted before release. Always gave me a chuckle as they sat there for...possibly months.
Side note on the concept art aspect. When developing sets for The Hobbit, LEGO was given scripts and such from the time where Yazneg was going to be the main villain. Y'know, the guy that Azog feeds to his white warg. But then when production ramped up on the movie, they decided to not kill Azog off in the flashbacks, killed Yazneg off in the present, which meant the set featuring the scene where the dwarfs are squaring off in the burning tree... there's no Azog. Just the guy who got chomped earlier in the movie, atop the beast who ate him.
The part where you added the armies/crews was hilarious, and as a potc super fan I really appreciate that you compared it to the concept art. I wasn’t expecting that level of dedication. I got this set when it came out and it’s still really nostalgic for me.
Honestly I like the Lego Blackbeard way better... probably because I grew up more with the Lego Pirates of the Caribbean games rather than the movies themselves, but still.
Not only are the pillars reminiscent of Atlantis, they also use a piece that is otherwise exclusive to that theme: the stones where you insert the ring keys
Despite being inaccurate to the movie, I still like this set and even bought it as a kid because I just found this set to be too cool looking to own. Plus, it looks a lot more entertaining and interesting compare to the movie version ( also, I'm surprise the movie was based off a book. I wasn't aware of that until now ).
Fantastic video! I love the research that went into this one - having that art book on hand really helped! It’s fascinating to see Lego sets based on concept art that differs so much from what we see on screen. I remember seeing this movie in an empty theatre with my brother back when it came out and screaming at the screen when they got to the Fountain of Youth, “that’s the Guardian of Forever from Star Trek!!” - seriously, it’s a dead ringer!
Thanks! I really appreciate it. I actually got the book just for this video but it's completely filled with SUPER cool art, and I'm glad I have it now. I had to look up the Guardian of Forever, but wow.. that IS a dead ringer!
Seeing how Lego uses concept art for their sets is actually really interesting. A shame I don't have the skeleton, map or Barbosa nowadays, but hey, nice video!
Fun fact about black beard, he use to tie candles into his beard of just straight up light it on fire because we went crazy from having syphilis because he slept around so much. Also meaning that a lot of people alive today could be distantly related to black beard because of how much he slept around.
For some reason, this is the only Pirates of the Caribbean set I have. And now I understand why for ages I had no idea which of the movies the set was referring to
Love the analysis. I had this set myself and I don't even remember it having the map piece. I love the POTC sets for not always being accurate to the movies but still containing creative pieces, like the falling flagpole in the cursed gold room set for the first movie and the small but very pretty bone cages in the cannibal set. I also love the London street set with the carriage.
i was just searching through yt for smth to watch with dinner and NOTHING good came up except this and now im subbed, so yea thats pretty dope lol, great video man deserve way more subs
Actually the thing that saved lego back then was mostly Bionicle, the license deal with star wars while it did pay gang busters eventually for them was a huge money pit.
Thanks for video. Now I want for this theme to ve released again, because it was either way before I got into Lego, or when neither I or my parents were able to afford consistently offcial Lego sets, even small ones
as someone who owns it i think it’s pretty cool to rip up for all the unique pieces. the waterfall and map are great and definitely not common in modern sets
Most bizarre example I know of, in the old PS2/X-box Return of the King tie in movie game, they have the Witch-King that was from when the movies were being filmed in 1999-2000 and before the reshoots and the changed look to what we see on film.
I remember that set. I completely forgot i had it when i was a kid. It was one of my favorite sets because it was so easy to build, i also remember loving the hat being the same as davy jones because it felt fitting that both bad guys were dressed similar.
I have a weird relationship with this movie and LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean in general. 100% beat the game twice but the latest two are the only ones I've seen. I got two of this set for Christmas one year ad well
As a massive Assassin's Creed 4: Black flag fan, I wish I had that Blackbeard figure, he looks just like his version from that game. He was also a better character in that game.
Thanks! It's funny to think about how the set designers must've felt after seeing the movie, and the designs they worked so hard on being completely replaced with something else
it was technically both. Star Wars boosted sales, which made them more money, but the royalty payments to Lucasfilms meant they were still losing money. Bionicle was their 3rd attempt, after Slizer/Throwbots in 1999 and RoboRiders in 2000. The focus on story, and without the need to pay royalties brought the company around financially.
LEGO basing movie sets off of concept art has been a thing for years. Like in the MCU sets, Spidey and Vision had incorrect spider symbols and forehead gem perspectively printed on them on their premier sets. I think that’s a thing for other movie tie in toylines too.
I agree with the builds in the set how they’re not accurate to the movie and they probably didn’t include Angelica because of her father’s fate in the chamber they’ve like kept that censored I do hope they make a new model of this set if they bring back the theme that will incorporate with Pirates of the Caribbean 6 which is to be announced.
The map appear in this set because this lego set was made while the film was in script issue , so this map appear this set because the original script is doesn’t let the map burn 😅
The toys going off the concept art is similar to what happened with davy jones for the second movie, all the concept art showed him with a cane, all the toys had canes but he never used one in the moive
The sandspeeder you mentioned at the start wasnt actually based on the last jedi, instead an unreleased toy by kenner in the 80s and later the legends canon in the 90s. It was a super weird choice for that wave and just to make in general considering how obscure it is.
@@brickjawns dude that’s Awsome I got a few like the bandits secret hideout and the weapons wagon and the sheriffs lockup. You gotta do some reviews tho cause that shit was hilarious

Yeah I still love the set
I feel like the black beard figure can be easily forgiven because it was literally taken from the concept art and looks damn good
Agreed
It's a shame the Lego designers worked so hard to model the art book and now people can't appreciate it as much because the movie changed everything.
19 dollars for that many minifigs is an absolute steal!
