I immediately thought oh it's sad that the speedchamp-team has lost such a great designer, but then I thought "oh but that's why City is so good this year"
I've said it before and I'll say it again: LEGO City is the new LEGO Icons! Raising the bar for kids today will lead to even higher expectations for 18+ sets later down the line, so LEGO is definitely making the right moves here!
Wow, okay, that explains the shift in design of City, a shift for the better! I'm particularly fond of the 60408 Car Transporter, and I was thrilled to see that the 3 cars supplied with it all feature the removable front and rear ends, and engines, from the 60389 Custom Car Garage! I'm also digging the new bigger, beefier construction stuff. Can't wait to see what comes next!
Thanks for a interesting interview! As a AFOL I am mainly interested in City because of the animals and the last few years it has been a fantastic theme in that regard. Happy to see that it continues with Chris aboard with some great new additions this year (already bought the hole jungle set wave ;)) :D
While not complex, the build of the double decker bus was just completely different to what I expected for what I thought would be a very standard vehicle. The paramedic helicopter from the beginning of the year also used those curved pieces from the Icons cars perfectly. Putting someone like this in charge of City is what Lego has needed to do for a long time. These sets feel deluxe yet are actually in kids price ranges. Well done Lego!
So glad to see him again. I had no idea he moved to City but it makes sense, some of the vehicles have really impressed me lately. I actually really want the Tourist Bus and I never saw myself wanting something like that or a lot of the sets from City, but this year it's really, really good. It's in the process of getting its "Friends reboot"
Okay, that explains a couple of things. I´m not a huge fan of City, but the latest car and construction vehicle line caught my attention for having remarkable design. Especially the 60409 and 60420 look particularly realistic and cool for "just" being City sets. And the new Space lineup is also special.
Chris is incredibly articulate and it’s so amazing to see how he thinks through every detail of a set no matter how small. Wish we could have him on technic!
@@RacingBrick yeah it's a pity. I recently met with a couple of young designers SFH Bricks (I interviewed him on my channel recently) and NV Carmocs who quite frankly do a much better job designing 8 wide cars. Using advanced techniques, great imagination on the car theme etc. They would make a great addition to Lego Speed Champions design team. It would be nice if you could also shine a light on these guys (and other great designers like them) as well. You have a lot more subscribers than me 😀 and of course you have close contact with the team at Lego.
@@speedybrick working as a LEGO designer requires way more than building skills. MOC designers are free to do whatever they feel like, they are not bound by part & build restrictions, stability requirements and a million other things. I would love to have enough time to cover custom builds & custom builders as well, but I don't even have enough time to keep up with everything that comes out of Billund. Keep publishing content about them & grow your audience!
@@RacingBricktrue I am sure they have a lot of restrictions. I’m enjoying meeting these guys, great to see what they’re making of course it should help my channel as well.
Hearing Chris is a thunderbirds fan definitely makes my day, and this really explains the insane step up from 2020 Lego city. Can’t wait to see what comes next from the theme. The space stuff is really hitting it out of the park.
16:23 my 5yo daughter loves the rotating sign on the tour bus! She's obsessed with buses and is always looking at ones out and about to see where they're going so the Lego model having that immediately set off her imagination! She loves all my Speed Champion cars too so she's definitely a fan of Chris' work lol
I really hope we get more TV/movie cars as part of Speed Champions. It sucks that we didn't get anything this year. I hope Chris being at City doesn't mean the end of the line
There are few LEGO designers as recognized and beloved by fans as Chris. I'm thrilled to see Chris pushing the limits of the City theme and adding something fresh to LEGO's current portfolio. However, I can't imagine the future of Speed Champions without Chris charting its course. The rest of the team is still there, but who will interact with the fans and keep promises like printed headlights?
LEGO City is in good hands! The Space theme, Construction sets and that new Fire Station are amazing!! Haven't been that excited about city for a long long time.
Great to get some feedback from the people who are close to the designs. Everyone can whine about everything they have in mind, but as a designer you will face the true issues that play. This is real people, there are way more factors playing when designing and producing. As a kid we never made complaints about sets. Nowadays people complain easily. before you do, try designing LEGO products yourself, you will experience issues you never deld with... Peace Out
I noticed a change this year. Love the Lego truck, excavator and the mobile crane. Amazing. I am mainly a technic collector at 45 years old. But I might actually buy the above city sets. We'll done!!!
Good thing to see that he still has the same enthusiasm, but is employing it on his new assignment. Just hoping that Speed Champions keeps up the flow that he (and probably some others) got going. Looking at the 2024 sets so far, my feelings have been mixed. Some are gorgeous and really fun and inventive. While others are a bit more "meh" or "samey" with previous offerings, or rely too much on stickers. 2024 is the year I have not instantly want to buy every new Speed Champion car (like I did in 2022 and 2023).
except the aston martin and the bw set, i kinda wanted to buy everything instatnly. the march wave i didnt buy as they came out, only over time, but that month was when i got into speed champions so thats for obvious reasons. since then i got almost all of the currently available sc sets plus the ford bronco and gt set. the june and august wave i bought the first day i was able to go to a lego store, and the bmw set i bought today. the aston martin i dont even plan on buying, beacause i already have basically the same f1 car, and the vantage doesnt interest me much
No wonder - I knew that the 4x4 Fire Truck in set 60412 was too good for a City set - that’s because City now has the Speed Champions Godfather taking the lead there. That Fire Truck can be MODed nicely to be Trailbreaker in 4WD vehicle mode.
@@RacingBrick Hmm surprising. I thought we'd get new SC sets in Aug and Nov, but since nothing was announced I wasn't sure. We got a lot of sets earlier in the year, and then crickets... 🤔 😂
Should have known this positive change in the City theme is thanks to a management change to no other than the legendary Chris Stamp. Fortunately SC did not suffer a terrible blow due to this. Unfortunately these quality of life improvements as well as all the design changes were not done in a cost neutral way, so you can find that more stickers replaced by prints equal in a higher costing set as well. Luckily the modular street plate idea was quickly thrown in the garbage bin where it rightfully belongs and the focus went into upping the design language and interplay between subthemes. That was the right move and I'm glad it was done later than never at all, because I was just about to give up on the City theme. Now all they need to fix is the width of all the facade buildings (e.g. a Fire station where 3/4 of the truck sticks out is just dumb) and go down a notch on the number of >100€ priced sets and all will be peachy. What I personally would wish for is to finally merge the animals between City and Friends, because let's be honest, the City ones are just as cute without the mascara, curvy bodies and pin holes. And it's not like we haven't seen City animals (e.g. bird, chicken) used in Frieds sets before. Imagine how many different goats we would have this year if they weren't different molds, not to mention the variety of cat and dog breeds.
the City Space 4+ set is one of the best looking of all the 4+ sets so far, not for me since it feels a bit redundant when i already have the intergalactic spaceship. but i really like how good it looks
I feel like this is a case of someone like Chris being required for the company leadership to let some passionate designers at city team actually spread their wings, because without him as person that has shown with speed champions that bringing new piece designs is worth it, some of these new city sets wouldn't be as awesome as they are.
hey Chris since there is no way to contact you directly, i have a request. Could you design a Tipper Truck with the new Designlanguage of the construction vehicles with 8 stud width. The 60420 needs a place to put the dirt.

chris seems lovely as does every designer i hear about from the lego group! brilliant interview!
Are we already seeing the impact on the speed champions product range with Chris’s departure? What do you think?
Well, I see no movie cars, there are stickered headlights/rear lights again, recycled builds, so yes I think there's a visible change.

That the trucks can switch is amazing but should definitely be advertised somewhere on the boxes/instructions

It's a great year for City but also the least inspiring year for Speed Champions since the switch to 8 wide.
Great for him but no wonder the decline in realism form the August wave of speed champions
Excellent interview
People talking down the SC lineup, AFTER finding out the old lead designer has moved theme. If they hadn’t, all would be fine.

We really need a 8 stud wide speed champions set! I’m super exited for more cars to come!
Is that why Speed Champions is losing its appeal ?
Ive not been interested in any set since the Mclaren F1. The upcoming Ferrari F40 looks alright tho
