Greetings! They’re a few things I would do differently in making another gazing ball for my garden. The first thing I would do differently is I would take and mortar strips around my bowling ball beforehand and then cover it giving your tessarae some grit to adhere to. ( see my video on mortar mache on plastic planters) or use fiberglass tape strips and mortar skim coat over that . (why do this? My gazing ball cracked .. I feel that perhaps the expansion and contraction of the bowling ball material in Florida heat made it do this. The other material that would highly suggest and I also have a video on this because I had to save the bowling ball that that was cracked with all the glass on it, and I covered itl with apoxy and tessarae .. apoxy is very durable. This is out in my garden now and looks amazing still. The ones I don't want on pedestals in the garden I'm going to support with a peg, stick, whatever you want to call it, in one of the holes in the bowling ball. The ball can go right on the ground and stay in the chosen spot.
Nice art and production. Glad to see that you had protection when handling all those little pieces of glass. Have a feeling the gloves were probably more to keep grout off your hands as working with glass art you get over what moms always tell their kids. "Don't pick up broken glass" Super video.

Hello. Thank you! It’s durable outside however I am going to offer a few suggestions as I found a few things out since making that video. Let me share them with you. 1. Use a silicone ( like a clear GE) to adhere your glass mirror 2. Seal your grout. I am in a place where it’s very humid. Subtropical weather pretty much all year. There are two types of sealers that you can use from mosaics one is penetrating and one is membrane creating a coat on your piece. I use the penetrating one. Stonetech - follow manufactures directions)has a heavy duty sealer. Wait at least 3 days before sealing. be patient as you take a brush and go over your grout aiming only to get it on the grout and not on your mosaic bits. If you do wipe off quickly. if you let it dry, it will create a haze. The other item of note is that my bowling ball cracked and I had to do the whole thing over again. That’s right. It cracked. I believe that the expansion and contraction of the actual bowling ball in the heat from the inside out is what happened I managed to salvage the ball but I did have to take most of my things off and start over again and this time since it was so cracked, I used apoxy and filled it in with tile and I do have a video on that which I’ll share with you here so you can take a look at what I did. I’m telling you this sometimes we don’t see what we don’t see. I wasnt thinking of the expansion and contraction of a bowling ball out in the hot sun. Terrific ... I have a stash of 1 styrofoam bowl and 2 bowling balls for years now on my weekend project list and this is very inspiring. Doesn't the sun dry up the adhesion and make pieces fall off? That was my reluctance I have done a few mosaic thingies for indoors and I noticed they were not particularly durable. You are a wonderful instructor, thanx.
Barbara, first thank you for watching! Let’s address your questions now... I use versa bond; available in both Grey and white as the tile adhesive. Make up small batches at a time. ( think thick brownie batter) then grout after your area is dry. ...let your grout cure them Seal with a waterproof sealant. TA DAH! You can now enjoy your project with total admiration🥰
Thank you for your comment. After reading your comment I made a search and read an article on this. I’ve used thinset, e6000 and silicone for outdoors . I’ve never had an issue. Well I guess if something happens to this bowling ball and the glass turns black it will look like vintage glass or the”mercury glass “look. That said I’m going to make a footnote in description. Hi there! Ok. For starters. I would use e 6000 glue for exterior. Or ge clear silicone. Or apoxy. ( comes in white) and other colors) I would clean and prep bowling ball well followed by a coat of white paint. The white will allow for the beautiful ( in lieu of white thinset. transparency of colors. If you are grouting I personally would go with a charcoal for a dramatic effect however other colors would work well. ( not white) I have done quite a few bowling balls. One completely cracked ( u can see what I mean in latest garden gazing ball video.I also share how I corrected the crack effect.. I have several where they still look amazing. Marcie, I was so inspired by your video that I made 2 gazing balls. Oops, after awhile I noticed some of the mirror pieces were dark. Moisture got in and I have a failure, so on my 3rd ball I applied a grout sealant. I haven't worked up the nerve to put it out in the elements yet. Did you have that kind of experience?
Hi. I haven’t had that experience. .. I e had others lol and each time I learn something new. Did you use thinset or a gue to attach your mirror??….since I made the video another viewer left a comment referencing mirrorglass turning black if thinset was used. I indeed googled this and saw one article saying this so I went back to my video and in description made a *** making mention of this. I have used e 6000 and clear silicone (ge) as well as thinset and each is fine like the day I made it. A grout sealant is recommended to create more permeability for your creation. I’m always experimenting with new products, and ways of using them. And pass this info on to my viewers. I commend you for your creative pursuits. And I thank you for watching.
@@marcieziv I used thinset. I totally believe it failed only because I didn't seal the grout. If there's a hard way to learn something I will find it. Experience is the best teacher. Plus my Momma didn't raise a quitter! Working on my 4th ball. Thanks for my newest hobby! Inexpensive and upcycling is a great combination!
@@marcieziv I found out that sealing the grout, did the trick! 2 gazing balls covered in mirror pieces and thinset was the glue. Then sanded grout, then a brush on grout sealer. No issues! Yours are beautiful, what a talent you have!
Hi Christine; it looks iridescent however it’s simply cut mirrored glass and when it’s outside it reflects everything so it APPEARS like it’s iridescent.thank you for watching 😃

Near the end of the video you walked us through the garden, and you had two small dark bluel balls on the ground in your garden. They looked iridescent. They're made of cut glass too, or are they painted with acrylic??

@@marcieziv😃 Oh, you lucky woman to find gazing balls at a thrift store! I know you were featuring mirror balls in this video, but those 2 balls also caught my eye. I think there are craft paints that might create a similar effect, I'll check into it today at Hobby Lobby. I could use a ball or two in my empty, plant-less garden. Nothing seems to grow in that area. Your mirror ball is absolutely stunning! I'm going to Hobby Lobby today to price chip mirror pieces. Hope it's 50% off in that department this week. Thought you shouldn’t use thin set with mirror as the silver will turn black eventually….

Ahh yes. The glass balls are dark green blown glass orbs from Spain bought in a thrift store. ⭐️
