GIGANTIC fan here, from the Adirondacks. (USA) Heartbroken. Been going to Hip shows since 1994. More than 50. This is a tremendous loss to humanity and were feeling it here in our little corner of paradise. The Hip are very popular in the Champlain Valley.
It's really sad that most of the United States didn't embrace The Hip the way they should've. they REALLY don't know what they missed out on. BUT I will say this....I live in the Niagara Falls/Buffalo NY area and we are the one place here in America that LOVES Gord and The Hip! We are so saddened at the loss of such a legend. RIP Gord. You will be greatly missed.
actually i listened to both for this occasion, flipping between the two. normally i dont listen to the radio. 103 did a pretty decent job with their all day tribute however.
I live in Rockford Illinois and I love the Hip. Saw them several times and Gord was the best front man I have ever seen. His lyrics are amazing and I will always be a fan of them.
Here in Northeast Ohio on the southern shores of Lake Erie, we were lucky enough to get some great Canadian stations. There were so many of us that knew how great The Hip were. So sad that Gord passed too soon.
Rest in peace Gord you've brought me many moments of enjoyment with your music and your persona on stage here in Buffalo you are much loved and will be missed greatly
I used to live in Erie PA and was lucky enough to hear FM 96 out of London On from across the lake. Those of us who had ANY sense LOVED the Hip & many other Canadian bands. I'm in Florida now and have been converting A LOT of people who would have never known about them into fans. Canada, sorry for the loss of one of your National Treasures!!!
I listen to all types of music. Living in Cleveland on the southern shore of Lake Erie I have been able to listen to CKLW AM 800 and 93.9 The River both out of Windsor. The 3 or 4 college stations here also played The Hip. I was lucky to see them in smaller theaters. These shows were packed with Canadians and fans from Buffalo. I have been to a LOT of rock concerts and many we're Canadian bands. None of these shows came close to a Tragically Hip show. It was an event. And they just kept topping their previous concerts. I was lucky and had hoped it would never end. And it truly won't. The memories, albums, videos, posts will be with me forever. Thanks
Went to small venue (1000?) show in Grand Rapids, MI. Blew me away. But it felt like me and 999 Canadians. Those guys would drive 400 miles to see the Hip. And worth every mile.
I'm from New Jersey and MuchMusic was available in our cable market for a few years. Thanks to MuchMusic I got to see and hear bands from up north. When I first heard, "Something On" by The Hip, that was all I needed to become a fan. Since then I was hooked. R.I.P. Gord
I live west of Ann Arbor I saw them once in Detroit the rheostatics warmed up two wonderful bands at one show. The viewers were mostly Canadian being at the border. They were played on the radio here. People knew and still know who the the "hip" were.
I think this is just one of the many reasons Canadians have such a love and connevtion to the hip. It's not that we don't want to share them with the world, it's just that most of the world doesn't relate to the music like we do. They are simply Canada's band and always will be.
Carole Sawyer Same here, but I grew up abroad with loads of Canadian friends and my ex was from Northern New York / listened to them as a kid on radio stations out of Montréal. I've never understood why they didn't reach a wider American audience. It's shameful and embarrassing, really...
How about recognizing the record/entertainment industry for doing such a poor job of promoting them? Most Americans have never even heard of the Hip simply because they have never heard them. Fortunately, Detroit being within earshot of Windsor did in fact give many of us the opportunity to appreciate them. IMO, comments politicizing the loss of such a great artist just shows that "deplorables" exist on both sides of the border.
I didn't get to hear the Hip until I married a Canadian! Im a bigger fan than hubs!!! Ive never felt more ripped off than finding out Bout the Hip. Anyway, 3x front row Dallas shows helps sooth the pain. I had Gordie sweat, yes I did.
We loved the hip in south east Michigan! Thanks to 89x I've been a huge fan since 1992. I really never realized that the rest of the US hadn't discovered them, but there are a lot of fans here.
Canada looses a great man today. a country now morns the death of a true Canadian legend. may US the country of his his birth remember the man, the legend, the one true Canadian. may he rest in peace and may his friends be comforted.
I think you meant "May WE, the country of his birth..." Using 'us' threw me for a minute. Other than that, I'll echo your sentiments. It's hard to believe, even though we knew it was coming.
Love The Hip and always will Won't forget my first time seeing Gord live. Left a hole in many Canadian hearts when cancer took him away from his family, friends and country.
I notice a lot of border states can really connect with the hip more than those in the south/southwest states.. prairies and northeast states have a lot in common with Canadians considering 90% of us live within 100 miles of the states
Ok someone needs to immediately start at Tragically Hip/The Who cover band called "The Tragically Who" R.I.P Gord! You and The Hip were Buffalo's favorite adopted sons!
The first time I heard The Hip was in a film that was shown on our television in the late 80s or early 90s. I don't remember the name of the film, but The Hip were mentioned in the credits. From then on I was fascinated by the band, especially Gord Downie. I have all the albums from the first EP to Man Machine Poem. I'm not Canadian. I'm German and live in Germany but The Hip are still one of my favourite bands.
I think some Canadians think way too much about "what America thinks" - who gives a flying F what they think, Americans voted an idiot to run their country....As Canadians, we should be proud of what we do within our own borders, Gord Downie was a perfect example of what a True Canadian is all about..Rest in Peace Mr. Rock'n'Roll..it's a sad day.
You're absolutely right. It's about time we just carry on and enjoy what we have. Canadians really take this wonderful country for granted. Vive le Canada.
Eddy Yes, Canada should certainly be proud. But they deserved far greater recognition globally. The measure of a highly successful band extends far beyond any borders within North America. Rush, for example, was huge *everywhere.* They were all over the radio in Europe (France, Germany, etc.) and parts of Asia when I was a young kid. Based on their unique talent, The Tragically Hip merited the same level of international success (in my opinion, anyway).
Gord Downie wrote the best lyrics in rock, hands down. I wish I had become a Hip fan years earlier than I did, the first time I saw them live was in 2009 and I was blown away by his stage presence. He was a brilliant guy, a true original and though other people have already said this: Buffalo loves The Hip. RIP Gord
I'm from a Detroit suburb and they would play to a sold out audience at either the Fox or The Fillmore Detroit (State). So they had quite a following here. In Detroit though we grew up with the CBC on t.v. & we are right near Canada. We spent time drinking in Windsor too, or taking the train to Toronto. I think that makes us more open to Canadian stuff. Bands have to be really careful with how they try to break America, & unfortunately I think the Hip took the wrong approach. Having Dan Ackroyd who everyone knows as Canadian wearing a Canada shirt announce them as his friends from Canada was not the way to go. I think there's something on a subconscious level where Americans think oh, ok, this isn't for us, this is for Canadians. So people don't even give it a chance, or really judge it for itself. I think that we Americans have done that over time with anything that comes from Britain, Australia or Canada. There's a sense with some things that 'that's theirs' it isn't for us. The Hip should have just started to play in the U.S., and they would have caught on more. Powderfinger did the same thing. They are a great Australian band that came to the U.S. in a similar way. They were on David Lettermen and he talked about how they were the Australian band of the year. They never got a foothold here, they should have just started touring. I think it's just best not to talk about where your from.
It's offensive they weren't globally huge. They had a unique and captivating sound, great production and most of all lyrics. Forget Tim Hortons, Canadians love the Hip
Lost my father a little less than 2 months before we lost Gord. I don't remember the last time I cried so much over such a short time. I have a Hip concert on my channel that I was fortunate enough to direct the house video for. Pine Knob Music Theater. July 2000. Music @ Work tour. Check it out. It isn't monetized. I just posted it to share with my fellow Hip fans.
I remember seeing them in North Carolina in a reasonably large club that was a good two thirds full... it was a good show but if it had been anywhere near the Canadian border it would have been packed to the rafters with thousands trying to get in... say when they played places like Detroit half of Windsor would cross the border, same with Buffalo... living by the border meant being aware of them simply because we could receive your radio signals... living in Western New York many of us were absolutely fans for years, I can't speak for the rest of the States but they were well know here... and Gord's going on despite the tumor that was killing him was a truly brave act... R.I.P.
Especially that he is Bruins fan nobody knew he went to a playoff game and he talking to Grapes and Bobby Orr this past April. Nobody gave him a standing ovation in Boston. Espeically knowing that Bruins Coach and GM Harry Sinden was his god father. Although like Grapes and Gord Downie Harry Sinden was also from Kingston or Amhearstview which is a town just west of Kingston
When you play a couple Tragically Hip songs for Americans, they frequently tell me, "sounds like REM." I don't really agree, but I can see why they think that.
American music tends to mostly be generic, which is why I think the most quintisentially generic Canadian artists (ie. Bieber, Avril Lavigne, Nickelback, Drake etc) are the ones that are able to really breach the American market. When you create unique music that tells stories, you frankly aren't gonna make it in the US.
I don't buy the lyrics excuse. People listen to the music first and if they like it, then they investigate the lyrics. His mostly Ontario based lyrics meant nothing to me at first and I still love the band.
Their lyrics were poetry. One doesn't need to know where Bobcaygeon is to love that song. I had never been to London, but loved Quadrophenia. Had never been to California, but loved California Dreamin and such. All one needed to do to become a Hip fan was to see them live. That was how I first heard them, other than occasionally hearing NO is Sinking on the radio. I worked video for a show on their Phantom Power tour and immediately went out and bought every release they made. I even planned my trip to Europe in 2000 around their tour there.
Perhaps blame their label for not promoting them properly down in the States. Maybe they figured they didn't need to be successful down here. I don't know that they got any airplay on many US stations given that they have only 4 charting songs. I live in Chicago and have only ever heard 1 radio station play their music...and it was only 1 song "New Orleans Is Sinking" which was their 2nd highest charting song at #30 on the Mainstream Rock Chart (not the Hot 100).
Canada we didn’t know him but we still love you. Trudeau has made a lot of us question some of you but we still have your back and like I said love you anyways

I think The Tragically Hip is hauntingly Canadian and is something Americans just don't get. Not their fault, they just don't get it.
It is weird that pukes like Justin Bieber were overrated in the United States but way better Music such as 1970's British Bands like Slade and Canadian Bands like Tragically Hip were shunned. Then again the United States use to have good Music taste up until 1971.
Nope, it doesn't matter at all but at the same time after the fact i'm more curious these days, weeks and as time goes by, years. Why didn't our brothers & sisters didn't take to The HIP like we did. I'll chalk that up to why it's amazing to be Canadian, AND in the end, i'm OK with that.
"Not surprising perhaps, most Americans couldn't locate Bobcaygeon on a map"!! Haha. Let's be honest, most Americans can't locate their own town on a map!! That's not a joke, it's truth!!
Bands from other countries reference their countries because it's normal to talk about about where you are. Gord and The Tragically Hip just refused to fall into that typical Canadian thing of being too embarrassed to talk about themselves. British and Australian bands make it in the US. A Canadian band should be no different.
LOL. What a couple of uneducated and ignorant morons. The US didn’t deserve The Hip. Simple as that!! Thank goodness The Hip didn’t give in to the BS “American Culture.”
that's because gatekeepers prob did not want a united world like they United Canada as well Gord and the band spoke up on issues like oppression of indigenous children ...they were closest thing to super heroes I've ever known and I live in the US
Have some respect!! The man just passed away. Your ignorance speaks volumes. U don’t deserve to know their beautiful music. If you don’t know about the Band, then there’s just no need to respond!!
I thought Dan Akroyd just wanted to show them off to Americans by saying this is what it is to be Canadian, plus look at Dan;s shirt he had on ! a little exposure couidn't have hurt either. Dan just wanted them to be recognized by the world..they deserved it ! I don't think its stooping low. Its boasting. but just my opinion
GIGANTIC fan here, from the Adirondacks. (USA) Heartbroken. Been going to Hip shows since 1994. More than 50. This is a tremendous loss to humanity and were feeling it here in our little corner of paradise. The Hip are very popular in the Champlain Valley.
Great to hear the Hip had fans south of the border, RIP Gord!
Eddie CJ they were loved here in buffalo
Buffalo loves The Hip as much as any Canadian.
Many New York summer nights filled with the lyrics of gord. From lake placid, Potsdam, Watertown, massena, Rochester etc. #rip
Nice.
Detroit, MI loves the Tragically Hip. The Live Album, "Live between Us" was recorded at a sold out show at Cobo Hall. I was there. Miss you Gord!!
It's really sad that most of the United States didn't embrace The Hip the way they should've. they REALLY don't know what they missed out on. Mid west did not get to hear them. No radio play.
Yep lockport here
the day Gord died, i listened to 103 the edge nearly all day, a Buffalo radio station playing EVERY hip song. it was noteworthy.
NiagaraWarrior I listed to 97.7 all day I gave up on the edge a awhile back
actually i listened to both for this occasion, flipping between the two. normally i dont listen to the radio. 103 did a pretty decent job with their all day tribute however.

Thank you kelly boje, Gord & the boys sang about Canada mostly, and their music will live on.
I know I am kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to stream new tv shows online?

Tucson, Arizona loved the Hip!!
mostly only border states to Canada know of the Hip. thanks for all the great music guys.

This chic has been hip to the Trag for years, sorta Ahead by a Century. #Americanfan.
Sad if I cant find them tonight😥

Mca was a horrible mismanaged label..theyd sign bands and just throw it out there with no promotion
Being near the border enough to listen to Canadian radio makes the difference. I'm just outside Toledo and we know and love the band.
Seattle loved and loves the Hip
LEGEND - I love you Gord, always will.
Houston loves The Tragically Hip. RIP Gord.
Thank goodness for MuchMusic being available on DirecTV back in 1995-1996...they got me hooked on the Hip and The Tea Party.
1:16 pretty sure it's Greasy Jungle that references Hazeldean, not Grace Too. Just a slip I'm sure.
We loved the hip in south east Michigan! Thanks to 89x I've been a huge fan since 1992. I really never realized that the rest of the US hadn't discovered them, but there are a lot of fans here.
We loved The Hip in Burlington, VT. They played a ferry cruise early on.
"It didn't come it doesn't matter" Great line!
From Toledo...big following here.
Canada looses a great man today. a country now morns the death of a true Canadian legend. may US the country of his his birth remember the man, the legend, the one true Canadian. may he rest in peace and may his friends be comforted.

I heard there is pockets in the beautiful U.S.A with lots of hip fans, like new york state, boston, and minnesota so ive heard, rip gordie.
Love The Hip and always will
Won't forget my first time seeing Gord live.
Left a hole in many Canadian hearts when cancer took him away from his family, friends and country.

One of the best rock bands ever.
i live in lancaster pa and i saw The Hip 6 times in small clubs here.i love this band and miss Gord.
Rest In Peace Gord. You will be greatly missed.
Sad day for most Canadians....Enjoy the stars Gordie.
Most Canadians? Whst does that even mean..
Try all Canadians
All Canadians!
Ok someone needs to immediately start at Tragically Hip/The Who cover band called "The Tragically Who"
R.I.P Gord! You and The Hip were Buffalo's favorite adopted sons!

One of the coolest band's of all time absolutely no question about it! I'm sad I never saw them live

You're absolutely right. It's about time we just carry on and enjoy what we have. Canadians really take this wonderful country for granted.
Vive le Canada.
I'll just add that if we want to say being successful means making it big internationally, there's a whole world out there, not just Trumpland.
Thanks Julian for appreciating being Canadian!!
You too. We're very lucky.
I'm off at the end of the week to see the other end of this great country, my 4th time to see eastern Canada.

They got airplay in Detroit on 89X and are well loved here. Thank You Gord.

RIP Gord Downey. ...
I live in watertown NY they played here and everyone loves them and still does
Liar
I love that they were just ours. Others outside Canada missed out but the few that were Hip got it...
Buffalo became Hip to the Hip
My heart is broken
It's offensive they weren't globally huge. They had a unique and captivating sound, great production and most of all lyrics. Forget Tim Hortons, Canadians love the Hip

The Hip were & are Canada's best kept secret. Lucky us💓💓💓💕💖❤️

I live in Windsor so obviously Inknow a lot of folks from Michigan.... They have a huge cult following and are beloved in the great state of Michigan.
Any band that can sell-out Cobo Hall as the Hip did have moved beyond having a cult following in that market.
Canada we didn’t know him but we still love you. Trudeau has made a lot of us question some of you but we still have your back and like I said love you anyways

Too bad we couldn’t lose Sid from BT
All they had to do was sing Courage on SNL and things would have been different.

Darryl: We're actually all in agreement. Relax, Gord wouldn't want us arguing amongst ourselves.
Have a great day.
Meh. The rest of the world thinks Americans are morons.
Who cares what America thinks .. they all in love with Justin bieber , need I say more ?
What a dam shame!
Killerwhaletank
that's because gatekeepers prob did not want a united world like they United Canada as well Gord and the band spoke up on issues like oppression of indigenous children ...they were closest thing to super heroes I've ever known and I live in the US
