As someone who was about 20 in 1985, that mall is exactly like the malls we had. It was the place to be back then. The nostalgia in this season was perfect. The music, the clothing, and the mall are perfect. Howard Jones, who has a song in one of these episodes, is a huge fan of the show. He talked a lot about it during one of his concerts last year when I saw him play.
I was 18 in 1985. Just like Billy & Steve, I also just graduated high school (Class of 1985). In fact, Billy's birthdate (which we learn in season 4) is exactly one week before my birthday. 😄
Clothing and music aside, malls were pretty much the same for almost fifty years. So anyone growing up in the late 70s, 80s, 90s, and even early 2000s would have very similar experiences with malls. They only revamped them when shopping malls started dying off en masse.
We look back on it and laugh but as long as inflation is relatively level across the board it isn't as laughable as it sounds at first "glance" Prices vary regionally, but just think about common expenses like gas. Look at gas prices in the mid 1980's and suddenly the lower wages don't seem as absurd
@Taylorswiftfan13308 Oh yeah, I worked at Mcdonalds back then, with that $3.35 an hour wage. Honestly it went pretty far. Farther than minimum wage can go now. Paid for gas in the car I bought myself, Cruisin the ville, driving around and around in circles to see everyone you knew. bought us beer with the extra tax paid to an older person to buy it for you. Eating out constantly, going out every weekend. Also bought lots of books and magazines, and bought every dungeons and dragons item that came out, and regular concerts with friends. I lived the best days of my life in the 80s on a $3.35 an hour paycheck.
Oh Amber now I know you just committed a felony.. Phoebe Cates is famous for her role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. A TON of celebrity names are in that movie. Like Nicholas Cage, Forrest Whitaker, Sean Penn, Judge Reihnold (Billy from Beverly Hills Cop). Just to name a few. It was a HUGE movie in the 80s, and that song was also featured. Its probably one of the funniest movies you will see, but it also captures the essence of the 80s perfectly.
New fans of the show always ask the same question when they see how much older the kids look from season 2 to season 3. Here is the breakdown: Season 1 - Eleven & the boys are around 12 yrs old. The boys are in 7th grade. Nancy, Barb, & Jonathan are about 15+ yrs old (10th grade). Steve & his douchebag friends are high school juniors around 16 yrs old. Season 2 - The boys & Max are in 8th grade, about 13 yrs old, as is Eleven. Nancy & Jonathan are 16 & in the 11th grade. Steve & Billy are high school seniors. Season 3 - it is now summer break of 1985, 9 months after season 2 ended. El, Max & the boys are about 14 yrs old & will be starting high school in the Fall. Nancy, Jonathan, & Robin will be high school seniors. Nancy & Jonathan are working as interns at The Hawkins Post. Steve & Billy have graduated (class of 1985), and are now working summer jobs. Erica is 10 yrs old & just finished 5th grade. She will start middle school in the Fall. Season 4 takes place in Spring of 1986 - aprox. 6 months after the epilogue & conclusion of season 3 in October 1985.
In real life, the main kids were like 11 to 12 years old during season 1, Millie Bobby Brown was 12 and now she's about to be 21 in just about 2 months from now and I heard she got engaged earlier this year as well
Ice cream shoppe girl, Robin Buckley is played by Maya Hawke: Ethan Hawke's and Uma Thurman's daughter, so Hollywood royalty. I think she played this part perfectly.
Season 1 was my favorite season till season 2, then season 2 till season 3. Season 3 was fantastic! And I was blown away when season 4 was even better! Season 3 is a ride though! Get ready Amber!
Maya Hawke plays Steve's coworker in this season. She is the daughter of Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction as Mia Wallace) and Ethan Hawke (Dead Poet's Society as Todd Anderson), both of which you've seen. You can definitely tell they are her parents for sure. And as you saw in S2, Steve makes a great babysitter for the younger crew. This season to me was when the show started to really ramp up the stakes. The mall vibe was definitely a thing in the 80s and 90s and where all the kids went to hang out. Joyce is referencing how big malls put small shops out of business and that is essentially what happened to many towns in the 80s and 90s. Now those malls are dying because of Amazon and online retail. One of the things that this show does a bad job with addressing is the aging of the child characters. This season is supposed to be set a year after Season 2. But as you can see, the kids are young adults. Game of Thrones does this better with their child actors.
Orange Julius is like Jamba Juice - a place where you can get smoothies and juices and whatnot with all kinds of healthy stuff and veggies and fruits, and optional add-ons for vitamins and boosters and whatever.
To answer your questions at the start: Dustin was away for a month at a summer "science camp." Phoebe Cates was one of the hottest actresses of the 80's, voted as one of the world's most beautiful women. Every girl wanted to look like her & all the boys had massive crushes on her. She had roles in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Gremlins part 1 & 2, and several other films of that decade. She married Kevin Kline (another popular & talented actor) in 1989. She quit acting to focus on raising their two children & running her own business. "Orange Juilus" was THE BOMB! Every time we went to the mall, the first place we would hit was Orange Julius, to order a large size drink to sip on while we walked around in the mall. It's a fast food restaurant that had some food items but the main attraction was their famous beverage "Orange Julius" which is so delicious! It is a blend of frozen orange juice, milk, vanilla, sugar, and ice. It tasted like an Orange Creamsicle frozen treat. It's not quite a smoothie or a regular juice/soda. It also came in other flavors like strawberry & pineapple. They eventually started making smoothies too. Many locations have shut down with the decline of shopping malls, but there are still over 900 locations in the US & Canada. Luckily, there is one at the mall in my city. I don't go to the mall often these days, so it's been quite awhile since the last time I had one. If you have a mall nearby, check to see if there is an Orange Julius in or near the food court. If you find an open location, it is a MUST TRY! The other flavors are good, but the original orange is definitely the best first choice if you've never tasted it. 😋
A warning about this season - like the rats exploding... I wouldn't eat before or during watching episodes! There are more gross moments. But it is an important season that leads to the season 4 which is the second best, in my opinion. :)
I worked part-time in a movie theatre when I was 16. Maybe '89. I was making $3 an hour. But things were cheaper then. Movies only cost about $6 to get in.
Phoebe Cates…. Every guy that was a teenager in the 80’s knows her. Specifically from Fast Times at Ridgemont High which this season takes a lot from. When Billy first walked out as the lifeguard and the moms were thirsting, “Moving in Stereo” by The Cars is playing which is a direct reference to a Phoebe Cates scene in Fast Times. That scene specifically will also be addressed by one of our main characters later this season. And he speaks truth…. 🤣🤣 You are going to love this season!
@@gurulimboIf I remember correctly, she kind of fell off the face of the earth after that. Retired from acting at what was really the height of her fame.

Ok I know that you are not too familiar with the 80's references, but I thought I would explain 2 things with you about this Episode. When Dustin describes his new gf to the gang and says think Phoebe Cates but hotter, Phoebe Cates was the brunette girl that was mentoring Stacy in Fast Times in Ridgemont High cuz they both were working together at the fast food place at the mall in Fast times. And remember the song that played when Billy was releaving the dark haired lifeguard at the pool and the moms were drooling over Billy at the pool? That same song played in Fast Times when Judge Reinhold was lusting over Phoebe getting out of the pool in Fast Times as well. So there was two Fast Times at Ridgemont High references put in this particular episode of Stranger Things, Dustin mentioning Phoebe Cates who was actually in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and the song played when she got out of the pool but except used for Billy and the middle aged moms drooling over him. Are you with me so far? And the football player student that was big and had the silver camaro in Fast Times was named Forest Whitaker. In case it's been torturing you off and on when thought about.
This season is summer of 1985. The kids are 14, and about to start high school. Minimum wage in 1985 was $3.35 per hour. After taxes, you made less than $2.50 per hour.
The movie they are watching is Day of the Dead. Third in George Romero's Zombie masterpieces. Over on the movie channel you guys should watch Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. The last two have remakes, which aren't bad, but first check the originals.
She has an aversion to zombies, thus she isn't going to watch them nor Walking Dead and she also hates when the White Walkers show up in Game of Thrones.
Amber, please, please, please check out the cast from Stranger Things on the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. The skit with Jimmy playing Steve will absolutely have you rolling on the floor. It's hilarious. This is such a great show.😊

Phoebe Cates was an actress whose claim to fame (at this point, at least) was her pool scene in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"; Billy's emergence from the lifeguard shack was a sort of homage to that- red bathing suit, slow motion strutting to "Moving In Stereo" by the cars, etc. 😄🌊

@fordhouse8b Well, he is biased
15:06 Yup, minimum wage in 1985 was $3.35/hr.

Carpet dash pads were very common in the 70's and 80's. It was to protect the dash from the sun and cracks in the plastic.
I still love how Billy says "Mrs. Wheeler!" Makes me chuckle every time.
You can tell Mrs. Wheeler feels a little neglected at home. That is the only reason Billy is even a temptation.
He is 19, and she is old enough to be his mom. Lucky lady!
What would they call a man in his early forties hooking up with a 19 year old girl?
Nancy's mom has got it going on.
