  • A new concept ship has been introduced to Star Citizen, but with no release There are tons of ships to try in Star Citizen, but a select group are catered towards first-time players. Despite this, these “starter” ships have a lot of benefits to them in the long run. In today’s episode of the Launch Sequence Podcast, I’m joined by Dedleader to discuss what makes a starter ship, and how you can make the most of them as well.

The Aurora fan is the individual who upgraded their MR to a LN and uses it as their daily driver until theve earned their C1 or Cutlass Black in game, then by the time they've earned a Carrack, they use it as a snub in the top bay because it holds 4 missiles, 4 size 2 gimbled guns, carries 3 SCU of cargo/goods, and has a bed. Also, there has been speculation (copium dreams) that its cockpit will go strutless and its wings will eventually fold out, so that it is like a tiny Scorpius due to their extraordinarilly similar architecture and the need for additional atmospheric flight-surface ballancing and all the aesthetic changes to the RSI lineup.

i really like your idea for a temp work agency. it could have reputation with that agency, and provide better wages and bonus for happy emplooyers. yes a good thing to visit major towns. on the other hand, they might be waiting for more concurrent players for stuff like Looking For Group features.

@@ParagonFangXen the aurora definitely needs some change to the rear because that back end is weirdly big to just fit an engine, quantum, and fuel. I feel like it could be shorter or certainly unfold in some way.

Have other ships But I love the Avenger Titan as a starter. Don't think telling new players its bad because of what it looks like is a good call. Single seat, good fire power, good starting cargo, and you can fully load the cargo bay and still access the cockpit. The biggest problem with the Titan is that it needs its gold pass badly.

    2) its modularity comes online

This is something that star wars galaxies did well. Ship ownership was a later patch and, for the most part you got around by chartering passage on an npc shuttle. That ship would teleport you to where you needed to go. When you got your first ship it was a starter depending on your faction. You would have to level up your ship xp to qualify to use better chassis's and better components. Ultimately you would ask to get on someone's tricked out multicrew ship to get that xp quickly.
Because everything on that game was player run, you would need players to be crafting ships, have to be the right level etc... essentially you stuck with your first ship for a while and when you got to the end ships you were set.
Star citizen, coming from wing commander where all there is is a ship you fly kinda has the opposite approach. There's no real reason to fly just one ship and stick with it...
For a while around last year's iae, when all we were getting were new starters, it became silly to keep any of them because - if you already have the next ship up, this one is obsolete.
I ended up keeping the cutter scout, and I think this is what the video was trying to say... At $50 I can get the smallest entry into scanning. It has a scan station and does x number of things. If I want to specialize in that task I can work toward a terrapin... These starters could be an entry into a role or task that will serve you well and earn you small level contracts. If you have a herald you can do data running to a limit of 50 scu of information. If you want more you'll need an msr, but you can still do all the data jobs with the base ship.
Right now, a ship like the sulyen - which is marketed as a delivery and entry into cargo are completely overshadowed when you can get a C1 with 10 times the capacity for an extra $20. The ralien has 300scu... For me $90 is a lot for a fancy Amazon delivery truck - even with the alien tax.

I love my Syulen. Not because it is great, in fact in 3.23 it is worse since the large profile and low HP pool get it killed instantly. However, the living space, elevator, engineering area, all just make the ship fun to "live out of".
Fly the ship you love and enjoy not the one that is the best. I own a F7A MKII not because it is the best, but because it's been a favorite of mine for a long while! When it gets it's bugs fixed I'll still be flying it often based off of looks alone.

We don't know what blades or AIs will look like in the future, but we know that a single piloted ship will be at least basic maintenance. IMO i would say the Cutter is the best starter just for the bed and cargo. However, once someone gets going in the game I would recommend upgrading it to the C8R. It's a ship that I still find myself using for quick qt jumps, bunkers, and even if I need some food and water.

It would be really cool if you could disable a ship and if you can successfully board the ship and take control of said ship you can take to a pirate shipyard or something that will pay you to drop off the stolen ship. The person or squad in the disabled ship could choose to self destruct the ship so this doesnt happen. The self destruct would need to last maybe 10 to 20 mins so the boarding team has time to get into the ship and disable the self destruct so they can take the ship and make money would be awesome.

The easiest way to add "armor" without doing a full Maelstrom system, is instead of the current damage resistance percentage use (or add) a damage reduction factor (to go with your other recent video I play lots of RPGs like BG3). Damage resistance is percent, damage reduction is a flat number. It prevents pea shooters from affecting tough targets, because ALL damage is reduced by the numbers, and that flat reduction means smaller numbers are far less effective.
Examples: you have a gun with 100 alpha attacking a ship with 50% damage resistance. Its damage dealt is reduced to 50. Same with 50 damage reduction. Now, go to a gun with 250 alpha: against the first it deals 125, against the second 200. Finally, take a gun with 30 alpha: against the first ship it deals 15 damage, but against the second it deals 0. Doing the two together you also have to decide which reduces damage first, but that's part of the balancing.
To summarize, damage resistance helps against big guns, damage REDUCTION helps against LITTLE guns. It can limit or stop death by a thousand cuts situations like come up with the current light fighter meta.

Death should have more consequences, but that has to be after they fix the bugs that kill you. I die more and lose more ships to bugs than I do to anything else.

    • @justalex4214
      @justalex4214 2 месяца назад +4

Death already has enough consequences as is. You lose time (much more than in most other games) and gear. The issue now is that gear is way too easy to come by. If we had a more in-depth equipment system where the piece of armor you wear is not easily replaced with another piece that might look different different but has the same stats, losing that armor would actually hurt quite a bit.

    • @billdabeast4
      @billdabeast4 2 месяца назад

@justalex4214 I agree with the equipment piece. When I start running low on equipment, I run a merc mission and get another 11 sets plus weapons. However, I think their concept of regeneration basically becoming less effective is interesting. I just don't want them to implement that when I die by getting ejected from my ship during server migrations or hitting an invisible ship that randomly doesn't load in. It would be way too punishing. Especially if I also have to try to recover hard-to-collect armor pieces

I take the point on blue sky development, but CIG pitched this game with certain specifics *and sold ships based on their pitches*. It would be entirely fair to change things if this was a $40 steam game, but selling a $450 Endeavor Hope with explicit gameplay described makes it really hard to walk back to “it was aspirational”. Basically they sold assets for gameplay before they had actually made tested and evolved the gameplay, and that’s on them. They really did over-pitch so man6 ships, with features that might never get here.

Good talk! Thanks both. I wonder if there actually will be a starter ship in the final product,. We get them currently so that we can get in and fly, but who knows maybe you will just be starting with some starting cash and that is it. I actually hope they will do a test like that with the generally alpha population as well in the future to test the viability of it. If that is the case your "starter" will be anything you save up for in-game for your first ship and then there will be people who don't even get a ship, FPS ground pounding only. Those people will be looking for a lift on someone else's ship.

Normally it wouldn't matter, but this is kind of an important claim, especially to try to determine if CIG is jumping on the "Anger and confusion are still SEO" negative marketing bandwagon. They seem to be willingly withholding information lately to cause confusion; like a shitty drama movie. Doubly especially, because I'm subscribing to them on the original faith of it funding transparency.

A starter ship is a misnomer. Is your FIRST ship that introduces you to the game. It's the ship that gets you in and gives you your first experiences. Your starter ship will determine whether you get hooked on the game; it's your first and possibly last ship purchase. Once you've decided to get into the game your starter is just the ship you started with.
For me good starters are the Cutter, Titan, and Nomad. They will offer a wide range of gameplay and should get you enough of a sample to know if you want to play or not. Once you're in you can upgrade and buy more ships and once you're into the game you're going to have more than one ship and the idea of "starter" becomes moot.

I kind of regret upgrading my mustang to a better ship, because in my opinion the best starter is the cheapest one that will give me limited opportunities to do various activities to experience the full journey from zero to hero.
I'm waiting for a full wipe, then I will exchange my cutter for a Mustang, I will start with limited funds, at the beginning I will struggle to save up for a cutter, which will enable faster and more efficient looting of FPS locations, and the ability to transport a small vehicle. I'll save up for something better, maybe a fighter, or maybe for Cutlass Red for even better FPS experience (and ROC Mining), or even prospector or Vulture. Eventually I'll buy something like Connie or Corsair, and then I'll just start collecting ships, all for ingame money.
Honestly, if it was possible to melt ship without a game package, I would spend all my funds on skins and start the game from scratch without a ship.

Outposts will be small and hold like 1 or 2 boxes for sale. Big ships don't care about making those stops so small ships are perfect to do these trade runs. and if they have rare but worthwhile goods. I could also see the drug run be perfect for like a nomad.
I alos think a hull b will be a commonly used ship by the player base. Because it can land on planets it opens up a lot of trade routes.

To me a good starter ship is one that continues to be useful as you grow your fleet. The titan is a well armed fighter with adequate storage, habitat and hull hp, the Pisces is small straight forward and versatile and it can spawn from vehicle bays. You can always find a use for these ships even after buying bigger and better ships. I don't see this being trying for the Mustang and Aurora. They feel like ships you want to try and escape from as soon as possible and are unlikely to see any further use once you upgrade to something better. For that I consider them poor options for starter ships and game packages

The irony of making tier 3 medbeds do respawn again is that medbeds, even Tier 1, no longer heal injuries. You literally need to kill yourself to heal a T3 arm injury. Sometimes I swear we go two steps back and zero steps forward. It also feels a lot like dithering. They rework features which aren't important to avoid working on ones that are, like they are afraid to finish. The wall panel on the Carrack wasn't working so you needed to lay in the bed. They fixed that, sort of, and now laying in the bed doesn't work, you need to use the wall panel. They made it possible for someone else to use the panel while you're in the bed so see you injuries but the they don't allow them to perform treatment AND they made it impossible to treat yourself either, taking me back to the original point.
I seems like too option effort and time is expended without any measurable advancement, it's just churn. They circle jerk features that they have already worked on over and over never quite finishing and moving on. I not talking about big things that involve complex system, I mean things like the medbeds and UI. I noticed they changed the UI for treating injuries AGAIN which is probably why it's broken AGAIN. Instead of showing you a list of injuries and checking boxes you now need to click on the injured limbs and treat them one by one. More needless feature churn. Just finish the damn thing CIG.

Death of a Spaceman has a great deal to do with regenerative degeneration. Few people realize that the current regen system is going to change, and regeneration will come with medical risks attached, and will see the introduction of prosthetics and regenerative disorders. Permadeath IS A THING, and will become a thing. The value of the life of your character will depend on how you use that character.

Then consider doing a ccu upgrade after you know ur direction in the game. Unless you are massicst, I don't think you can realistically grind out in game money to get a $150 to $200 ship. And consider you need to do this twice a year with often they wipe all progress.

The Mustang is better than the Aurora imo which flies like a brick but the Aurora does have a bed which the Alpha does not. Both really need a rework/gold standard pass.
The C8X has no amenities but you can bring a long a couple of friends and even maybe Pulses too.
The Cutter has the best fit/finish with a large cargo/vehicle bay for it's size but you shouldn't fight with it and it's handles like a boat.
The 100i I feel is under appreciated since it handles and accelerates like a dream, it's unfortunate it's over priced.
The Titan I want to like but it has poor handling in atmo (has strange understeer) and the cargo bay while larger doesn't really fit any vehicles because of the opening height.
Syulen has good fit/finish like the Cutter and is better equipped to fight even though it's profile makes it a target. The weird take off/landing orientation is a detriment though.
Arrow is very specialized and you'd really have to know you only wanted to do ship bounties to pick it.
Nomad has poor hydrogen efficiency but is the bast bang for you buck of the "advanced" game packages. It has a weird power issue with stock the power plant iirc though.
Cutlass Black is a good all arounder but has probably the worst fit/finish of the ships with game packages.
Freelancer handles poorly and has the styling of an airstream trailer. It does however have a good number/size of pilot controlled weapons.
Hornet has the same issue as the Arrow with the exception that it has the cargo carrier module.
The Andromeda and EXPLORATION packages aren't worth mentioning because of the associated costs.
Personally I prefer the Mustang of the available options since I'm more familiar with the game now but I did start with a Titan. I feel comfortable recommending either the C8X or the 100i as game packages to new players based on their performance/utility. Then they can CCU to something more specialized or keep them as shuttles since they can spawn at Platinum bays and have low claim times.
I'm with DedLeader on the Aurora loaner, I wish there was a way to prevent it from appearing in the terminal. They need to add a way to customize your terminal entries so you can sort/hide some.

in my experience, any new player in the game will constantly die, there are a lot of bugs in the game and death awaits even on the stairs) A new player will constantly die and get back into the ship and fly and die again. From this point of view, the Starter Ships should be fast and easy to control. Cutter and C8X Pisces is a bad choice, they are very slow and flying them will start to tire you out, especially after constant deaths)

    • @cthree87

The Pieces is very fast and agile especially in atmosphere and a very useful ship for deliveries and getting place to place. The claim timer is very short and it can be spawned at mining outposts if you end up stuck. It's a lot more versatile then you give it credit for.

    • @IrisCorven

???... I started with a C8X, after years of not touching the game or my Aurora since the hangar module. The thing was fantastic - quick and nimble, I could do up to MRT's in it, it had good cargo space for a starter, seats to cart friends around, etc. It never failed me, outside of not knowing an NPC Cutlass might show up at certain missions when I was out of the ship, or a bunker turret catching me before I realize it was spawned, in the early days.
Not only that, but I swapped it for a Cutter Rambler because I wanted a "tiny home". It does everything close to the same, and may be less nimble and worthwhile in combat, but it's perfect for getting around, doing non-combat related missions, etc.
On the flipside of things, I absolutely hated the Avenger Titan. Not only for it's boring look, but because I felt no challenge in any regard in doing anything. It does everything so well, it felt like there was no growth or adaptation to push me to increase my skill further. I had to LEARN how to fight back in the C8X and Cutter. In the Avenger, I just killed things.

There's at least two different definitions of starter ship in SC. There are the ships you can buy to get into the game. These are your $75 and less starter package ships. I see these as "Entry" level ships and they really need to be adequate at whatever they are doing. Then there are the ships that get you started into a game play loop. Nomad for hauling\trading, Prospector for mining, Vulture for salvaging, etc. etc. These single seat ships are the industry "Starter" ships.

"More than 2 server fps" except the most common experience you'll have with low server fps is while you're in station. You can certainly launch your ship with 20-30 fps (my pc is kinda budget, rx 6600, 16gb ram, I can play Tarkov at 1080p 100 fps) and that's all you need to reach space and do your game loops at 50-60 fps (I can't vouch for frames against fps ai combat yet). You can generally do 2-4 gameplay loops (full cargo runs, missions, salvages) before the servers crash so if you're doing something high risk, you can wait for the servers to crash, relog, then do your high risk gameloop with more security.
It's definitely playable, and if server meshing is really coming out this year or two, it's only gonna get better.

A C8X is multi crew, it has 3 seats, has cargo and that's definitely a solo starter ship. It can also absolutely be a ship that can always be used ingame and a good investment. A solo ship IMO is any ship you can manage yourself, whether it be using a combination of blades for unmanned turrets or a few NPC crew for different manned positions. Now if you feel confident to leave safe space, that is a choice you have to make, but anything over 4 - 6 crew will be dicey with engineering coming into the game.
