One can't help but notice how crude, yet how beautifully crafted these race cars are. The welds, the parts, the wiring, the clever configuration...all business, yet like jewelry in the eyes of car people.

I've changed a lot of gears over the years in sprint cars and midgets. Not nearly as much room as you have there. Couldn't get an impact gun on it if you wanted to. Changing hot gears are a lot of fun!

The idea is to set the gearing so that your engine rpm reaches the top of the power band at the end of the straightaway. Hopefully the car accelerates hard the full length of the straightaway without losing traction.

Kenny Not a mechanic. My Dad was and my brother is. Just a Nascar fan. Probably because of my father. But I do watch a few channels mainly guys out of Utah. They all own fabrication and repair shops. Plus most of them do Off-Road Recovery work. Not I will ever know enough to consistently work on my old Toyota Sienna Van but I have learned a lot just watching these guys tear their trucks apart. They are typically doing modifications on their trucks to pull people out or rock crawling.
But I have seen them tightening nuts and screws with their Milwaukee drill/driver/impact wrenches. But I understand you using the manual wrench. You are making manual adjustments because of your understanding and history.
Now I can take a lot of electronic parts apart. Computers, and printers. Worked retail for 29+ years.

When I worked for a TA2 team, they used a quick change and we had to safety wire everything. Otherwise the back cover would come loose and piss oil everywhere. There isn’t enough brake clean and rags on the truck to clean that mess up.

I learned something Kenny. We are switching from old school Frankland rears in our vintage cars to Winters . You showed me to hang he cover instead of laying it down. But I did make my own gear changing pan that has an area to lay the cover , and spots for the 6 bolts in a Frankland rear

"Been there and done that" several times myself. NASCAR has used the Ford 9' rear differential for 50+ years. Gen-7 NASCAR cup series cars use an Xtrac transaxle with incorporated 5 speed sequential transmission. Thus, changing the gear ratios is impossible during a race. Xfinity and truck series still use the older version rear differentials.

I do the same with small two-stroke engines, but I don't use torque wrenches anymore on those. It does lock bolts down if you put a bit under the cap screws. Red locktite still gets used on machined fitted parts with no gaskets.

In situations like this, I avoid tooling up an impact altogether and use an weak AA battery powered electronics screwdriver to spin 'em down, then do the final torque down by hand with a wrench.

I am one of them racers that you talked about knowing all the stuff. I watched this video four times to make sure I saw right. I have a question about something I saw? I would like to know if you checked the oil level in that quick change, because while you were changing the gears there was a steady stream of gear oil dripping from the center section off the rear end.
