To avoid Carrot and Onion Fly sow alternate rows of Carrots and Onions, Carrot Fly hate the smell of onions and Onion Fly hate the smell of Carrots.
fantastic idea Pete..thanks for sharing.. I will give it a try
@@japanwithMaikin Great idea will sure try that. Question is it true that carrot flies cannot fly higher than 18"?
I put raw rings of onion around the edge of my carrot containers since my onions are still germinating inside. Seems to be working for carrot flys. Do you have any suggestions for mosquitos? It’s hot here so the mosquitos like to hang out in the moist containers. Every time I water or stick my hand in I get a cloud of mosquitos flying up at my face. 🥴😂
Lol carrots and onion bros
Really
i actually watered my carrots with tea and that keeps the flies at bay. I use a large watering can and cut open about 5-6 tea bags and dump them in, then add very hot water from the tap and put the container outside to cool. then watered the carrots. seemed to work pretty well
HandMade By Holly what type of tea? Did it mold?
@@wafflglittr1434 don't remember seeing any mold. and the tea was just the cheapest i could get
@@wafflglittr1434 I've done this with black tea with good results! (Zone 5b)
How often?
Is this a one off or do you have to do it at every time of watering?
@@javedmushtaq3099 i did it every 2 days. i got one of those giant bags of tetly tea. lasted me a few years.
I did start watering with tea AFTER i noticed the wire worms.
As a gardener who started in the late 1990s I find the level of information, technology, and sources of helpful gardening advice to be exponentially increasing. This is really cool.
Absolutely!
It's such a peaceful life, beautiful nature and fresh fruits. No greedy corporations and board director. Wonderful. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.
Growing your own food is so empowering! :-)
much rather the garden planner plug than constant RUclips commercials of body-shaper, car insurance or horrid movies.
Pickled carrots are one of my favorite snacks, and a great way to preserve our harvest through winter! Highly recommend

Carrots are very slow to germinate, so it's particularly important to keep the seed drills moist during the 10 - 21 days after sowing. If your soil tends to be dry, lay a board over the newly planted seeds. This slow evaporation and ensures the seeds stay moist enough to germinate. As green shoots start to emerge, remove the board; your carrots are on their way.
Paul Steer .. what kind of board?
a 2x4 would be fine. Some people use plywood on larger beds.
I like to use large leaves of trimmed tomatoes, Swiss chard, or broccoli leaves to cover any seedlings of any plant to promote germination, and limit evaporation. Viola! Fertilizer and ground cover.
I cover freshly planted seeds with cardboard, with boards to hold it down if it's hot and sunny out. That keeps the seeds moist. Check every day and remove it as soon as they sprout. I showed this in my video "5 Favorite Vegetables".
Great tip!
Your videos are so far the best in terms of helping me with my gardening. Absolutely love them. 5* well done!
Thanks so much!
Carrots are Biennial. I leave a few carrots to go to seed for the next year. Then all I do is shake the seed heads over my raised beds or where I want them to grow. They come up by themselves in Spring after the snows end. Wherever I want to plant other veggies I just plant and carrots are in between everything else. I do the same with my lettuce. I have more than enough always never a need to buy seed and whatever room I need for other crops I just pull the carrot out and eat it or thin it. I can't imagine an easier method than this...
Brilliant!
When you add compost (if you add compost) do you do the no-dig method?
Wrightwood Certified Farmers Market Great idea!!! I will leave a few carrots go to seed🐝 I do that for the lettuce, but. collect he seeds, I will leave them there for now on. Thanks for the idea. blessings, Laura M

That's great! You do have to rotate crops though. If you grow carrots in the same spot year after year it gives diseases and pests a chance to develop. Plus your plants are using the same nutrients year after year so you have to use more compost if you don't rotate crops.
Your videos are great! Thank you for explaining everything so clearly.
Your videos are so beautiful, clear and helpful with an attention to details and explanations. Thank you... I'm definitely doing carrots this year too.
My God you are so good at this. I am so glad RUclips exists. The idea of you in some shitty office job wishing you could have a gardening show would kill me. You were born to do this.
Cheers Phil!
love your videos. Last yr was my best carrot year, and I did plant them with leeks, how funny you mentioned that. The leeks got cutworms, but the carrots stayed infestation free. They were so sweet, nothing at all like store bought. (garden veggies never are) Carrots are very slow to germinate and take all season to mature, as do the leeks, so that was my thinking.
Just WOW!!!!!! Yes, I know, it sounds as if I'm screaming wow, and I kinda am.
My son in law planted their 1st garden- for which I was not available. I was, however, asked to 'assist' anytime I liked. 😊
When I arrived, the cucumbers were laying on the ground and had a strangle hold on the tomatoes, also ground crawling...
Anyway, I had gardens from childhood and up. Now I am old and can not manage one on my own. So, I adopted it.
The purpose of sharing this is so u understand why I said Wow. He had planted carrots. And out of a lifetime of gardens, I've never grown or seen growing carrots. Why? Who knows. But after a while, I see something popping up. But he'd planted them such that they grew as if it were an herb. So I let it grow, Still not knowing what it was. Now, he tells me their Carrots 🥕 !!! It is time to harvest!
Which brings me to your amazing post! Now I know what the herb/carrots are all about. I may be late to the party this year, but after your tutorial, I'll be ready next year. Thx for sharing your talents.
I liked, commented, and sub'd. I can't wait to binge your content. You've taught an old dog new tricks.
Happy gardening. 😊
So pleased you'll be growing more carrots next year. And thanks so much for subscribing - a warm welcome to the channel!
I Subscribed few months ago yup late for the part-ty as well lol. I came here needed to know if I sow my carrots properly first time with carrots, and yes I did lol. I go and watch his old videos when I need help very helpful videos. Thank you!
This will be my first year growing carrots of all colors and so grateful for this video thanks for sharing. Being in Tampa Florida the struggle will be real but I'm willing to give it a try
Give it a try. Make sure to protect against carrot rust fly too. Good luck!
@@GrowVeg what do you suggest for that? This is my first year also but I'm in Ohio
Cool , We like it , thank you for your sharing
Thanks - this is really helpful for a gardening novice.
I have been trying to start indoors in the winter and transplant in the spring.....no wonder I never harvested a carrot. Thanks for the tips! Going forward I will start from scratch in the raised bed in spring.
Better luck with this year's carrot crop - I'm sure you'll ace it!
Good video, thanks for making it! I'm growing carrots for the first time this year.
Perfect video for my freshly planted carrots.
Thanks! I just found your channel and I love that your videos are straight to the point, very helpful and leaves no questions unanswered for a basic beginner like me! :) Thank you!
You're very welcome - and thank you for watching.
Would you please share the garden planner
CARROTS! My owner NEEDS to watch this!!!
Thanks for sharing I sow some seeds the other day.My first time growing them fingers crossed I will have carrots this spring.
How did it go ??
I dont even garden but I love these kind of videos :)
So much information and such good visuals! Love it; thank you.
😯 I would love to see some of these varieties of carrots.
Great tips with the sand going in and coming out! I never heard of that. Thank you.
The sand is a good tip! Can't wait to try it next year.
Still growing carrots?
How did you get on fella?
Very solid, no muss- no fuss guide. Thanks.
Well - I may be in trouble with my carrots, but I guess time will tell. Thanks for posting.
I just planted my carrots in a massive pot last night hope they thrive for the winter for me I’m honeslty excited
Gardening brings real joy like that!
I’m doing this for my SAE project
Companion planting for the win! Great video.
My carrots never came up but I suspect i neglected them during the hot days - so thank you so much for the cardboard tip - as i use a lot of it on my paths.
Great video. I make my own seed tape using Toilet paper w/ flour paste and a Q tip to dab them into place, folding it over and rolling it back on to the TP roller, makes planting easy.
I love the background music! I’ve struggled terribly with growing carrots before. One year they did good, another year they all got eaten before they were an inch tall. We also have super hot weather in summer so it’s hard to judge the right time to plant. Trying some this fall and winter. I’ve found that by mulching lightly (even heavily) they germinated better for me since it gets so hot the top soil dries out by noon. Anyhoo hope this fall is a good crop. They just started sprouting. Purple sun, st Valerie and red cored chantenay.
Good luck with this year's carrot crop. I like your tip for mulching - it must certainly help to keep the soil below cooler and moister.
Thank you. This gave me a few more tips than those spoken out loud.
For example, I now know I could solve my issue of no good soil in the garden by getting a raised flower bed, and those weren't nearly as expensive as I imagined.
That's great to hear. :-)
Thanks for posting another informative video. And the insect link.
I love Mokum and Bolero - both Nantes varieties that are crunchy, sweet, and store well. If it's hot & sunny when I plant, I cover the seeds with 1/4" compost, then with cardboard to keep seeds damp enough until they sprout, as seen in my How to Grow 5 Favorite Vegetables video.
I also like Mokum. We mulch them in the fall and dig them all winter, until about March. Any longer than that and they start to grow again.
Thank you. I'll raise the pots now. Grew them in wellies with my daughter when she was little, had one serving each, but it was a great experiment.
What fun! :-)

Where can I get your app for growing vegetables? I'll buy it without question. I purchase apps that are beneficial guite often.
Giving it a go this spring, actually, next weekend!
Bill Hill how did they turn out?
Great videos! Planner looks fantastic.
Such a nice presentation.
I am gonna try planting it tommorow....
It's amazing really, my friend. Thanks a lot.
Great tip @2 mins 40 for planting small seeds would also be good to mix the seeds with flower.
A friend of mine grew some lovely sized carrots in a compost mixed with sand , carrots love loose soil type mix , if your solid is hard they won’t grow so remember loose garden mix of your type add some sand no rocks or stones and they should grow well .
Thanks a lot for sharing
Thx for this info! Short and sweet
Thanks for sharing your tips! 😊

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
hahahahhaha
Yeah me too
XD
@Joe Owens I got a job interview I thought I was ready..
Salam brother thanks for your time and support for this video it's been very productive lesson. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've heard an idea is to mix carrot and radish seed together. the radishes thin the carrots out, and the 28 - 35 days to harvest radish also helps to space out the carrots. I haven't tried this, wondering if anyone else has?
Radishes are handy sown with carrots like this. They are ready long before the carrots and help to mark out the row once they germinate. As they are removed, the space becomes available for the carrots.
I have tried this and do it regularly. It works well. Especially when planted in a pot with a tall vegetable like tomatoes.
Love carrots gonna grow my own veggies now
Good on you!
awesome thanks! im going to sow my first batch now in portugal, hope its as easy as potatoes lol
thanks
Good video. I got more out of these 6 minutes than I did from 20 minutes long videos only showing me how to sow the seeds.
Indeed. I just discovered this channel 2 months ago. I don't have the time to listen to other garden channels. But I sometimes listen twice, to get the details right!
Thanks for the help
Thank you for an awesome video. You will find in in the garden!!! 🏡🐞🐝 Blessings, Laura M.
Thanks for the great video m, I think I'll give carrots a try.
So pleased to hear it - they're very rewarding to grow.
Thank you.
Thank you for the video, very helpful. I plant my carrots next to beets, but with green onions and radish around them...since radish comes up faster and kind of shows me where the carrots are to be (at least that's what companion books say to do) and the Onions help deter the smell like leeks do...I didn't have much luck last year on my carrots, most likely started to late in the season, or missed something important. I have a decent green thumb when it comes to flowers and plants, but still starting to get my green vege thumb working! LOL...seems carrots have been my biggest hurdle...so maybe this year!
Thanks again
Good luck with them this year. A new growing season brings plenty of fresh opportunities - including a ravishing row or two of carrots.
Thanks! I see seedlings showing and sprouting where the carrots are! Along with the radishes, onions, lettuce, celery, spinach, corn and basil! So I must have done something right!!
Thanks so much! I tried to plant carrots two times, but they didn't develop well. I'll try again with another variety. Also neeeed this planner 🤗🤗
Good luck this time round Gabriela. :-)
Make sure you work the soil so it's loose
Glad I found you! Love your very informative videos. Your website is designed so perfect! Are there information I need thank you! Also enjoy a big bug hunt will be reporting all the purse in my garden starting w aphids this summer:(
