Last year I let a bunch of carrots bloom in the summer, which attracted a great variety of insects to observe. The plants went to seed, and "self-sowed" in the garden beds, growing over a dry and cold winter. The new crop is the best I've ever grown, and I didn't have to do a thing!
Just a tip for anyone trying to grow carrots in denser soils with heavier clays and such, if you plant seed radishes first they will churn up the first few inches of soil for the carrots to grow. The radishes get picked far before the carrots come into action.
I harvested all straight carrots last year so I’m doing the opposite of what’s recommended this year. I do want to harvest some “comedy shaped veggies”. It won’t affect the taste but give something for our family to laugh about during the harvest season later in the year. As much as it’s hard work sometimes, gardening should also be fun!
I forgot about some carrots that I planted last summer. The other day I took a walk around the garden and bent over the container they'd been in. When I noticed a bit of orange peeking up, I dug down a bit and found that the inside of each carrot had disintegrated, but the outer skin was fully intact. 😂 It was the weirdest thing, pulling up these delicate, transparent orange carrot skins without the actual carrot inside them!
*You are a great guy my friend GROWVEG, but more importantly a good teacher. You also came across as very genuine and willing to share all that you know. May you grow in wisdom, I wish you abundant crops, happy gardeniiiiiiiiiing!!!*
@@lunargoddess2002 Conventional gardening wisdom says no, that carrots and parsnips, both, put out too long a taproot too early in their growth and are far too resentful of having those roots disturbed, to trust that you'll get a good harvest. Conventional wisdom predicts forking and twisting which, if you're a market grower, is generally undesirable. That said, if I wanted to attempt the experiment *as* an experiment of multi-sowing carrots, I think I'd begin by sowing those little, round French market carrots, known as "Tonda di Parigi" (or "...di Parisi") in Italian, and simply as "Parisienne" in French. They're about the size of a ping pong ball or a salad radish at maturity, and being round they're not too upset by heavy soils if that's what you're dealing with. If I were not unhappy with the results and wanted to know what other carrot varieties I could multi-sow, I'd next try one of the blocky, heavy-bodied carrots like "Oxheart," which was bred to handle thick, heavy soils. (I'd try to amend the soil, too, to give my carrots the easy and adequate drainage they prefer, no matter what variety of carrot I tried to grow.) From there, I might continue to try multi-sowing carrots which were getting a little bit longer and a little bit more slender until I found the carrots which just refused to tolerate multi-sowing, but I believe the further you get from a short, round or stocky, very thick-bodied carrot (which doesn't mean *small,* it means more length proportionate to the carrot's girth or the size of its shoulders) the more likely you'll get forking and twisting and as Ben has shown, some very artistic-looking vegetables. Good success to you!

What a lovely video! I have a method for warming soil, killing the weeds, and helping the carrots germinate. I put a piece of stiff, clear polycarbonate roofing material over the bed for a week to warm the soil, and it gets so hot under that the weeds just die. Then I also water my trench before sowing, then cover the seeds, and finally put the polycarbonate on top of the bed. This holds the seed in, prevents birds and mice from eating them, gives all the warmth and light necessary for germinating, and gives me a clear view of when the seeds sprout. then I put brick alongside and raise the polycarbonate up to protect the seeds until they're strong enough to fend for themselves. It works beautifully! I love your videos, thank you so much for taking the time to teach, especially in these really frightening times of food shortages!
What a great introduction, carrots really can be a wonderful crop if you know what to do! I worked on a farm that considered carrots (we did a small test crop in a 40 square foot area). We read a lot of research beforehand indicating that seeds can be planted incredibly close together and still grow to maturity. Our variety grew to be 1/2 of an inch in diameter, and the seeds could be planted exactly that far apart. It was incredible, when the tops of the carrots showed through the dirt they were perfectly lined up with their neighbors (we used a small wooden box with 1/2 inch spaced holes to get the seeds in exactly the right spots quickly, as the area was so large for hand planting). It was a really exciting harvest, I never would have expected the carrots to grow that large while touching, but the ones that we grew further apart were the exact same size, it was truly uncanny. The farm ended up closing the next year because the owner wanted to move, but the carrot trick rests in the back of my mind for when I have enough space to grow root vegetables again.

Great advice! Thank you. Have you ever tried to mix carrots with onions in the bed? They shall protect each other from their special flies. I love carrots in patties with oats. Or mixed with zucchini some flour, egg and spices they make great "Rösti" (= similar to hash brown?). Some sour cream on top and it's a taste of summer garden. 😊 I still had some fresh carrots in January on my little balcony. That was great.
How wonderful to have fresh carrots in January. :-) I have grown onions with carrots before, to help mask the smell of each other's pests. But I think the main advantage in doing this is that the different-shaped leave confuse the flies, making it harder for them to hone in their preferred plant.
My daughters loved the carrots we managed to grow last season. More this season are definitely in the plan. Peeled and boiled with some butter and salt takes me back to grandmas kitchen. It’s our favorite way to eat them fresh from the garden.
Thank you for this insightful video on carrots! My grandmother used to sow carrots together with radishes. Rashishes germinate quickly and mark the row and are ready for harvest when the carrots show their leaves. I did not know that the carrot root fly does not fly higher than a foot above the ground. Ben, you have to try Garlic Carrots! Slice and boil carrots as usual, drain and then fry briefly with real butter and crushed garlic (as much as you enjoy). They are incredible with cauliflower cheese or indeed any roast meal.
I planted carrots on October 30 2021, spring in Australia and they are still not big enough to harvest on 19 march 2022. I must be doing something wrong. Thank you for your great video.
I'm on the coast North of Sydney and I have the same issue with the carrots planted in my garden bed. The carrots that I planted in a container I have gotten a crop from. This is my first year of growing carrots so I can only guess that it may be due to the unusually high amount of rain we have had and the potting mix in the container being more free-draining than the soil in the raised garden bed.
Thank you for this. I'm glad I did right in sowing my carrots in containers after all now. I have stony soil and a slug problem, so sieving was endless tedium and the slugs are pretty overwhelming up here in Scotland. (I did notice slugs don't like white carrots so much, but also discovered that I didn't either).
I didn’t know I could grow early and mid season crops. Thinning was also helpful. Thank again Ben I like to ferment vegetables. So I’ll try carrots this year.

But you just made these carrots special and you did such a wonderful job I think I might even try growing carrots. My husband is not going to be fond of you LOL

Thanks for an energizing reminder of caring for carrots! We have raised beds and have not had to deal with flies nor slugs however using a cover to warm the soil may help us a harvest sooner, It seems to be delayed 3 weeks from the average. As always, we appreciate you. Happy Spring planting.
Our carrots seldom get to the kitchen. That sounds totally delicious!
Love your sense of humor
Thanks so much. :-)
Always a pleasure to watch a great gardener. Also love your furry critic
Thanks Stella. :-)
Great advice Ben, thank you 😊
This was absolutely fantastic (as are most of your tutorials BTW)! You've converted me into being a carrot fan! :) After a few failures, I'm going to try growing in pots this year.
That's music to my ears - so pleased you're ready to try them. :-)
Your enthusiasm has won me over!
Tomorrow morning I'm putting in my first 2 rows
Yey!
Great Video ; Lots of instruction BEN. Thank you for all your tips and tricks.
Cheers Robert. :-)
Thanks for info. Love carrots 🥕
I am enjoying all your videos! They are packed full of great information and are so informative. Your enthusiasm is the icing on the cake. I will be growing your typical orange carrots this year, but I have some from last year I will bring to bolt so I can collect seed. Thanks for sharing such great videos! ~Christine~
That sounds like a great idea Christine. And the bees and hoverflies absolutely LOVE carrot flowers.
Another great video, thank you Ben for all the advice you give us, I will go and grow some carrots now 😁
Great stuff Sandrine!
My late mam and dad always had allotments and a back garden full of fruits and vegetables, oh I only wish I had listened and learned from them when I was young lad.
It's never to late to learn though - that's half the joy of gardening.
Having watched your content i can see why you have such a great following. Brilliant vids a great energy. You've inspired me to attempt some veggies.
That's fab to hear Mark - cheers for watching.
Thank you! I’m planting carrot seeds in my raised containers on my apartment porch. Along with other seeds. Pray for their success. 😁
Will do - best of luck with them. :-)
I really appreciate your videos. This one especially, on carrots has been very helpful. I will definitely try these techniques. Thank you so much!
You've very welcome - thanks for watching!
Excellent video, thank you for the great information!
Brilliant video very informative 👏
Can't wait for the soil to warm up! More snow expected tomorrow so we'll have to probably wait until the end of April to start sewing them. Found it interesting to grow them in pots! What fun!
Hopefully when it does warm up things will be away with lightening speed. :-)
Definitely will be growing my own carrots and need to get some sand because the soil is clay loam. Thanks for the advice and tips for growing your own carrots. Great video Ben.
Cheers David! :-)
Helpful! I haven’t had much luck with carrots, but thanks to this in-depth video by Wonderful Ben I have gained renewed confidence to sow and grow carrots this year. Thanks Ben! 🥕🥕🥕👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼✅✅✅
That's really super to hear, so pleased! :-)
Thanks for this, I tried carrots a couple seasons ago with variable luck. Some great trips I will try next time.
Loving this channel...going to be following your advice this season....keep up the good work..thanks.
Cheers Chris. Enjoy the growing season!
Thank you so much for the detailed growing methods. I haven't found anyone that explains everything. I'm a new subscriber and a new gardener and you just don't know how your video is helping me. Much appreciated.
So pleased Jenn. Thanks very much for subscribing too. :-)
Ben, you have to try Garlic Carrots! Slice and boil carrots as usual, drain and then fry briefly with real butter and crushed garlic (as much as you enjoy). They are incredible with cauliflower cheese or indeed any roast meal.
Sounds totally delicious! :-)
Perfect timing.
Those slugs - the bane of our lives Debbie!
Thanks for the good video I just set out my carrots
I didn’t know I could grow early and mid season crops. Thinning was also helpful. Thank again Ben
I like to ferment vegetables. So I’ll try carrots this year.
They would certainly be fun to ferment I reckon. Do try them this year - they're so satisfying to grow.
Great informative videos, thanks for taking the time to explain things.
Embarking on a larger year of growing so quite daunting but exciting too.
Great to have excitement in there - that's what powers gardening!
I'll have to say that I didn't even really think about growing carrots this morning.
But yet you had me at every moment and I'm watching the thing again because I think I might have missed a little bit. It is one of the most excellent videos on RUclips I have ever watched. And I have a RUclips channel well a couple of RUclips channels a lot of RUclips videos. But you just made these carrots special and you did such a wonderful job I think I might even try growing carrots. My husband is not going to be fond of you LOL
That's really great to hear - I'm so pleased you're inspired to try growing carrots. The taste alone will make it worthwhile I promise!
I Always have good luck with carrots and parsnips!
I love to eat them roasted🤩🥕
New subscriber enjoying binge watching tonight, thank you love your wee dog and so does Barney our Springer Spaniel who is cuddled along my cheek viewing too. Vera
Thank you so much for subscribing Vera - and a very warm welcome to you and Barney!
I love your enthusiasm.I'm hooked and subscribed!!!
Welcome - thanks for the sub!
Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️😊
Thanks for an energizing reminder of caring for carrots! We have raised beds and have not had to deal with flies nor slugs however using a cover to warm the soil may help us a harvest sooner, It seems to be delayed 3 weeks from the average. As always, we appreciate you. Happy Spring planting.
And happy spring planting to you too Doug.
Our carrots seldom get to the kitchen. The grandkids and whoever is driving the cows to and from pasture seldom pass the garden without stopping to eat a couple of carrots, radishes, or a handful of rasberries or cherry tomatoes! Great video as always. Thanks from Western Wisconsin USA- USDA zone 4b.
Straight out of the ground is the very best way to enjoy them George.
Just discovered your channel and you are awesome!!! Going to binge watch and try my hand at container growing this year seeing as how I live in town. Thank you!!!!
Great stuff Jean. A very warm welcome to the channel!
