I remember reading Daredevil as a kid and always being impressed with the architecture (layout of apartments etc..) of NYC in the comics and then years later hearing artists breakdown Mazzuchelli’s work and how detailed he was with backgrounds :)
The colors for both versions of Year One were done by the painter Richmond Lewis, who is married to Mazzucchelli. She didn't do a lot of color work for comics, but some of the best!
A lot of the storytelling credit for City Of Glass goes to Paul Karasik, who did breakdowns for the book, or they worked closely together on them. I think they did a fantastic job on it, I love that book too.
Oh cool, I didn't know that about the City Of Glass breakdowns, thanks for sharing 👍 What a great book!
What a nice video to resume Mazzucchelli’s work.
Gonna Soak up this Vid, when I find the time! Thank you Thomas!
Great video! His range is amazing.
Thanks for watching! And yeah, his range is definitely impressive.
Great video ⭐️
Great video! Thanks! =)
thanks for this great video. After witnessing the later (re-visit) Superhero art of Late Mazzucchelli, it simply proves a theory of mine called the TOTH THEORY: ie. All of the greatest visual illustrators will inevitably (with age, wisdom, skill and time) progress their art to the space of "regression". That is to say, all of the great ones, regardless how detailed and complicated or technically proficient they were in their youth as professional illustrators, they always advance to a more simple, shape-based, less-lines "cartoony" style. Mazzucchelli's 2007 Batman and Daredevil are much more cleaner and crisp than Toth in his later stage but it is undeniable the similarity of Mazzucchelli's late Superhero renderings and Alex Toth's renderings from the 1980's and 1990's. (would love to see a video about this some day maybe delving deeper into this?)🤔💦
That definitely is an interesting subject and something that I would love to make a video around. Thank you for that suggestion. I suspect it has something go do with wisdom and a losing of the 'ego' to some extent, but it's something I often do ponder. I'll start making some notes. Thanks!
@@thomaspitilli No, I should THANK YOU. Your videos have really developed my skills of observation. Your theory of "losing the ego" does make a lot of sense. There is a point in any career when you have proven yourself professionally and you are no longer concerned (that much) with competing with your peers. After that point, most people RETIRE from their chosen professions. Art (thankfully) is an ever evolving process. You are always learning. I am thankful to be alive to see outcome of this evolution amongst the masters: Toth, Rude, Bolland, Buscema, Crumb, Ware, Miyazaki, Stevens, Sickles, Raymond and Sim🎨❤
Should really study Gene Colans Daredevil, because I recognize where he swiped about 80% of his Daredevil art straight from Gene Colan.
I assume most people don't go that far back to know that
Interesting point. From the little bit of Gene Colans Daredevil I've seen, I can see where he was influenced, especially early on. Mazzucchelli petty quickly came into his own though, in my opinion.
@@thomaspitilli yes Mazzucchelli must be a big time Gene Colan fan. I memorized most of Colan's work from Daredevil and Captain America, Mazzucchelli goes even beyond that.
I saw some of his new super hero art, Mazzucchelli's new art is influenced by Wally Wood.
@@luismangiaterra1031 Oh yeah, I'm a big fan of his more recent superhero work ( although there's very little of it). And I agree, there's a Wally Wood feel to it. A bit of Toth as well.
wouldn't say swiped, but definitely inspired
@@Evbot1337 he practically copied the pose and shading from Gene Colan Daredevil not just for some of it but the whole comic book.
He did that for all the Daredevil comics he drew.
Can't blame him.
Gene Colan was just that good of an artist that any artist (including Romita and Adams) couldn't even aspire to such greatness.
